Diwali 2026 in Ecuador: Dates, Lakshmi Puja Muhurat and Where to Celebrate
Lakshmi Puja in Ecuador falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, with the Vrishabha muhurat from 6:29 PM to 8:24 PM in Quito. Here are the five days, timings for nine Ecuadorian cities and an honest guide to celebrating with a very small Hindu community.
Diwali 2026 in Ecuador: Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday 8 November 2026, and in Quito the Lakshmi Puja muhurat is 6:29 PM to 8:24 PM. The five days run from Dhanteras on Friday 6 November to Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November. The dates are the same across mainland Ecuador; only the muhurat shifts by a few minutes from city to city, so check yours in the table below.
Editor's note (1 November 2026): HinduTone calculated these local dates with Drik Panchang tithi times and Drik's rules for each festival day, and checked the method against Drik Panchang's own dates for 15 countries. The Lakshmi Puja muhurat is the Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna within Pradosh Kaal, following the Drik method, worked out for each city's sunset and Ecuador's time zone. We do not list event schedules, because temples and community groups set their own programmes each year.
Diwali 2026 dates in Ecuador
These are the dates for Quito. They are the same in every Ecuadorian city we calculated.
| Day | Date | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Dhanteras | Friday 6 November 2026 | Day one: buying new utensils or gold, lighting the first diya for Lord Yama, and Dhanvantari puja |
| Naraka Chaturdashi (Chhoti Diwali) | Saturday 7 November 2026 | Day two: early abhyanga snan (oil bath), lamps in the evening, marking Krishna's victory over Narakasura |
| Lakshmi Puja (Diwali) | Sunday 8 November 2026 | The main night: Lakshmi and Ganesha puja at the muhurat, rows of diyas, sweets and family gatherings |
| Govardhan Puja / Annakut | Monday 9 November 2026 | Day four: Annakut offering of many dishes to Krishna, remembering the lifting of Govardhan hill |
| Bhai Dooj | Tuesday 10 November 2026 | Day five: sisters apply tilak and pray for their brothers, who offer gifts and protection in return |
For reference, the tithis behind these dates (Drik Panchang, IST) are: Trayodashi from 10:30 AM on 6 November to 10:47 AM on 7 November; Chaturdashi until 11:27 AM on 8 November; Amavasya from 11:27 AM on 8 November to 12:31 PM on 9 November; Pratipada until 2:00 PM on 10 November; and Dwitiya until 3:53 PM on 11 November. In Ecuador time, Amavasya runs from 12:57 AM on Sunday 8 November to 2:01 AM on Monday 9 November, so the whole of Sunday evening's Pradosh Kaal falls inside it.

Eloy Alfaro is the canton across the Guayas river from Guayaquil, centred on Durán. If your town is not listed, use the nearest city: the times differ by only a few minutes across the mainland. The Galápagos Islands keep their own time zone, one hour behind the mainland, so families there should not copy the mainland clock times directly; the date of Lakshmi Puja is still Sunday 8 November.
Lakshmi Puja muhurat 2026 explained
Lakshmi Puja is performed on the Amavasya (new moon) evening of Kartik. Two windows matter. The first is Pradosh Kaal, the period that begins at sunset. In Quito, sunset on Sunday 8 November is at 6:01 PM, and Pradosh Kaal runs from 6:01 PM to 8:24 PM.
The second is the Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna, a fixed (sthir) rising sign. Puja done in a fixed lagna is traditionally believed to help Lakshmi's blessings stay in the home. In Quito, Vrishabha rises at 6:29 PM and is still rising when Pradosh Kaal ends at 8:24 PM, so the overlap, and therefore the muhurat, is 6:29 PM to 8:24 PM.
Because Ecuador sits on the equator, sunset hardly moves through the year and comes a little after six in every city. That keeps the muhurat in a comfortable early-evening slot: you can light the diyas at sunset, finish preparations, and begin the main puja once the muhurat starts. If you cannot manage the muhurat itself, the whole Pradosh Kaal is still an auspicious time for Lakshmi Puja.
Hindu temples in Ecuador for Diwali
Ecuador's Hindu community is very small. India's Ministry of External Affairs estimates the Indian community at only a few hundred people, living mainly in Quito and Guayaquil and working largely in services, IT and trade. There is no history of indentured migration here of the kind that shaped Hindu life in Trinidad, Guyana or Suriname, and we could not confirm a traditional mandir anywhere in the country. Here is what we could verify.
Guayaquil
- ISKCON Guayaquil (Iglesia Hare Krishna del Ecuador), central Guayaquil. Listed in ISKCON's official centres directory; a Hare Krishna temple that holds regular Bhagavad Gita talks.
Quito
- Embassy of India, Quito. India opened a resident embassy in Quito in November 2025. It is not a temple, but it is the most likely place to hear about any Indian community Diwali gathering in the capital.
We found directory mentions of other Hare Krishna communities in rural Ecuador, but could not confirm them on an official source, so we have not listed them. If you know a temple or satsang group we have missed, please tell us and we will check it.
Temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead; check their websites and social pages. For most families in Ecuador, though, Diwali will be a home puja, often shared with a few friends. That is entirely in keeping with tradition: Lakshmi Puja has always been, first of all, a household puja.
How Diwali is celebrated in Ecuador
With so few Hindu families, Diwali in Ecuador is mostly a private and community-level festival rather than a public one. Typical celebrations include cleaning and decorating the home, rangoli at the doorway, lighting diyas or candles, the Lakshmi and Ganesha puja on Sunday evening, and sharing sweets and a festive meal with friends, including Ecuadorian friends and colleagues who are often curious to join in.
Where community programmes do take place, they usually combine a short puja or aarti, devotional singing, children's cultural items, and a shared vegetarian dinner. ISKCON temples generally mark the season with kirtan and a feast and, the day after Diwali, Govardhan Puja with an Annakut of many dishes. Yoga and Ayurveda have a growing following in Ecuador, and some yoga studios also mark the festival of lights.
Sikh families celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas on the same day, and Jains mark Diwali as the nirvana of Lord Mahavira. In a small diaspora, these traditions often come together at the same informal gatherings.
Indian groceries are limited, especially outside Quito and Guayaquil. Buy ghee, cotton wicks, kumkum, rice and dried fruit a week or two ahead, and look for clay pots or tealights as stand-ins for diyas if needed. Indian restaurants operate in Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca, and some offer sweets around the festival.
Simple Lakshmi Puja at home
You do not need a priest or an elaborate setup. A simple, sincere puja is enough:
- Clean the home, especially the entrance and puja corner, and draw a small rangoli at the door.
- Spread a red or yellow cloth on a low table and place images or murtis of Lakshmi and Ganesha, with Ganesha on Lakshmi's left.
- Set a kalash (a pot of water with mango or betel leaves and a coconut), and arrange flowers, rice, kumkum, turmeric, coins and sweets.
- Light a ghee diya before the puja and keep it burning through the evening.
- Begin with Ganesha: offer flowers and a sweet, and chant a simple mantra such as Om Gam Ganapataye Namah.
- Offer Lakshmi flowers, kumkum, rice, coins and sweets, and chant Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah or read the Lakshmi Ashtakam.
- Perform aarti with the whole family, then light diyas around the home, at windows and at the doorstep.
- Share prasad and a family meal, and remember those in need with a small act of charity.
In Quito, aim to begin the main puja between 6:29 PM and 8:24 PM. In Guayaquil the window is 6:37 PM to 8:31 PM.
Practical tips for Diwali 2026 in Ecuador
- Weekdays: Dhanteras is a Friday and Lakshmi Puja a Sunday, so the main evenings fall at the weekend. Govardhan Puja (Monday 9 November) and Bhai Dooj (Tuesday 10 November) are working days; check the official 2026 holiday list and plan time off if you need it.
- Sunset and weather: on 8 November sunset ranges from 6:01 PM in Quito to 6:11 PM in Machala. Quito and the highland cities are cool in the evening, so a shawl helps if you are lighting diyas outside. Guayaquil and the coast are warmer; keep diyas away from fans and open windows.
- Fireworks: rules are set by Ecuadorian national and local authorities. Check what is allowed in your city before buying any, and consider diyas and fairy lights instead.
- Apartments: many families live in flats. Use stable metal or clay holders for diyas, never leave flames unattended, and check your building's rules on candles on balconies.
- Temple pujas: if you would like a puja at a temple or at home with a priest, ask early, since there are very few priests in the country. Online pujas with a family priest in India are another option; just make sure the time is set for your local muhurat, not India's.
