Diwali 2026 in Barbados: Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday 8 November 2026, and in Bridgetown the Lakshmi Puja muhurat is 5:55 PM to 7:57 PM Barbados time (UTC-4). Dhanteras falls on Friday 6 November, Naraka Chaturdashi on Saturday 7 November, Govardhan Puja on Monday 9 November and Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November. Barbados is a small island, so these dates and timings hold for every parish, from Speightstown to Oistins.
Editor's note (1 November 2026): HinduTone calculated these local dates from Drik Panchang tithi times using Drik Panchang's own rules for each festival day, and we checked the method against Drik's published dates for 15 countries. The Lakshmi Puja muhurat is the Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna that falls within Pradosh Kaal, following the Drik method. We do not list event schedules: temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead, so check their websites and social pages.

Lakshmi Puja muhurat in Barbados explained
Three pieces of the Hindu calendar decide when Lakshmi Puja is done, and in Bridgetown they line up neatly this year.
- Amavasya: the new-moon tithi must be running at dusk. In Barbados time, Amavasya runs from 1:57 AM on Sunday 8 November to 3:01 AM on Monday 9 November, so it covers the whole of Sunday evening. In India this is the same instant, quoted by Drik Panchang as 11:27 AM on 8 November to 12:31 PM on 9 November IST.
- Pradosh Kaal: the period of about two and a half hours that begins at sunset. Sunset in Bridgetown on 8 November is at 5:29 PM, and Pradosh Kaal runs from 5:29 PM to 7:58 PM.
- Vrishabha lagna: Taurus is a fixed (sthir) sign, and worship done while it is rising is believed to help Lakshmi stay in the home. In Bridgetown Vrishabha rises inside Pradosh Kaal from 5:55 PM to 7:57 PM, and that overlap is the muhurat.
If you cannot start exactly at 5:55 PM, begin the preparations from sunset and do the main Lakshmi and Ganesha worship within the muhurat. Lighting the diyas around the house can continue after 7:57 PM. Please do not use India's muhurat in Barbados: the clock difference is not a simple subtraction, because the muhurat depends on local sunset and the local rising of Vrishabha.

Hindu temples in Barbados for Diwali
Barbados has a small Hindu community, and we could confirm one Hindu temple on the island. We have not listed anything we could not verify.
St Michael (near Bridgetown)
- The Hindu Temple Barbados Inc., Welches, St Michael. The island's Hindu temple, opened in 1995 in a building given by a Sindhi businessman. Before it opened, families worshipped at shrines in their own homes. The temple keeps a Facebook page, which is the best place to look for Diwali announcements.
We could not confirm an ISKCON centre or another Hindu mandir in Barbados, and we found no separate Diwali programme from the Indian High Commission, which covers Barbados from Paramaribo in Suriname. If you live far from Welches, or the temple's timings do not suit you, a home puja is the natural way to keep Diwali, and it is what many Barbadian Hindu families have always done.
Temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead; check their websites and social pages. A typical temple Diwali evening includes Lakshmi and Ganesha puja, aarti, bhajans, the lighting of diyas and prasad shared afterwards, and some temples also hold an Annakut offering on Govardhan Puja day.
How Diwali is celebrated in Barbados
People of Indian origin in Barbados are a small community of a few thousand, made up of several distinct groups. Sindhi Hindu families, many of whom came to the island as traders from shortly before Indian independence onwards, built much of Barbados' Hindu religious life and founded the temple at Welches. The Indian community also includes Gujarati families, people of Indian descent who have moved from Guyana and Trinidad, and more recent arrivals from India. Unlike Trinidad, Guyana or Suriname, Barbados did not receive large numbers of indentured labourers from India in the nineteenth century, so its Hindu community is smaller and more recent.
For Sindhi families Diwali is above all a home festival. Houses are cleaned and decorated, rangoli is drawn at the door, new clothes are worn and the family gathers for Lakshmi Puja in the evening. Many Sindhi households keep a home shrine all year, so the Diwali puja is simply a more elaborate version of daily worship. Shops and businesses owned by Hindu families often mark the day too, since Lakshmi Puja is also a prayer for prosperity in trade.
Sweets are a big part of the season: Sindhi favourites, barfi, ladoos and other mithai are made at home or shared between families and friends of every background. With relatives often spread across the Caribbean, North America and the UK, many families also keep in touch by video call on Diwali night. Sikh families may mark Bandi Chhor Divas on the same day, and Jain households observe Diwali as the anniversary of Lord Mahavira's nirvana.

Simple Lakshmi Puja at home
A home puja does not need a priest or elaborate items. This is a short general vidhi; follow your own family tradition where it differs.
- Clean the house and the puja space during the day. Draw a small rangoli at the door if you can.
- Set a clean cloth on a low table or shelf and place pictures or murtis of Lakshmi and Ganesha, with Ganesha on Lakshmi's left.
- Put a kalash (a pot of water with mango or betel leaves and a coconut) beside them, along with some coins, a little rice, flowers and sweets.
- At the start of the muhurat, light the main diya, invoke Ganesha first and then Lakshmi. Offer kumkum, haldi, rice, flowers, incense and naivedya (sweets and fruit).
- Recite a simple mantra such as Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah, or read the Lakshmi stotram or Ashtakam if you know it.
- Perform aarti for Ganesha and Lakshmi, then light diyas at the door, windows and around the home.
- Share prasad with family and neighbours.
Even ten quiet minutes of prayer within the muhurat, with one diya and a sincere heart, is a complete Diwali puja.
Practical tips for Diwali 2026 in Barbados
- Weekday: Lakshmi Puja falls on Sunday 8 November, so most families can do the puja without rushing back from work. Dhanteras is a Friday and Bhai Dooj a Tuesday.
- Holidays: we could not confirm Diwali as a public holiday in Barbados for 2026, so check the official 2026 holiday list and ask your employer or school early if you need leave for Govardhan Puja or Bhai Dooj.
- Sunset and weather: sunset is early, at 5:29 PM, so have everything ready by mid-afternoon. November is still in the rainy season, with short showers common, so keep outdoor diyas sheltered and bring them indoors if the wind picks up.
- Fire safety: Barbadian homes are often open to the breeze; keep diyas away from curtains and never leave them burning unattended.
- Fireworks: rules are set by the local authorities, so check what is allowed before buying any. Many families now prefer diyas and lights alone.
- Temple pujas: if you want a family puja or an Annakut offering at the temple, contact the temple early, as a small community means limited priests and space.
- Puja items: some items such as kumkum, camphor or murtis can be hard to find on the island, so buy them early or ask friends travelling from Trinidad, Guyana, North America or the UK.
