Diwali 2026 in Croatia: Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday 8 November 2026, and in Zagreb the Lakshmi Puja muhurat is 4:50 PM to 6:34 PM local time (UTC+1). Dhanteras falls on Friday 6 November, Naraka Chaturdashi on Saturday 7 November, Govardhan Puja on Monday 9 November and Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November. The dates are the same in every Croatian city we checked; only the evening muhurat moves by a few minutes between Slavonia in the east and Istria in the west.
Editor's note (1 November 2026): HinduTone calculated these local dates from Drik Panchang tithi times using Drik Panchang's own rules for each festival day, and we checked the method against Drik's published dates for 15 countries. The Lakshmi Puja muhurat is the Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna that falls within Pradosh Kaal, following the Drik method, worked out for each city's own sunset. We do not list event schedules, because temples and community groups set their own programmes; please confirm details with them directly.

Lakshmi Puja muhurat explained
Lakshmi Puja is done on the evening of Amavasya, the new moon of Kartik (Ashvin in the amanta calendar). Two windows matter. The first is Pradosh Kaal, the period of about two hours and fifty minutes after sunset. In Zagreb, sunset on Sunday 8 November is at 4:33 PM, so Pradosh Kaal runs from 4:33 PM to 7:24 PM.
The second is the Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna. Vrishabha is a fixed (sthira) sign, and tradition holds that Lakshmi invited during a fixed lagna stays in the home. When Vrishabha rises within Pradosh Kaal, that overlap is the most auspicious time. In Zagreb it gives 4:50 PM to 6:34 PM.
Because Croatia is in late autumn, sunset comes early and the muhurat starts while many people are still on their way home. On a Sunday this is less of a problem, but if you cannot begin in time, you can still perform the puja at any point within Pradosh Kaal, which in Zagreb lasts until 7:24 PM. In Split the muhurat is 4:55 PM to 6:41 PM after sunset at 4:37 PM; in Osijek it is 4:40 PM to 6:24 PM after sunset at 4:23 PM.
Do not use India's muhurat in Croatia. India's times are for Indian sunset and an Indian clock; the correct time is always the one worked out for where you are.
Hindu temples in Croatia for Diwali
Croatia's Hindu community is small. There is no large traditional North or South Indian mandir in the country. The most established Hindu presence is ISKCON (the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, known locally as the Hare Krishna movement), which has been active in Zagreb since the late 1970s and is officially recognised in Croatia. We confirmed the places below on ISKCON's official centres directory and other reliable listings. We have not listed addresses or timings; please check each centre's website or social pages before you go.
Zagreb
- ISKCON Zagreb – Nova Jaladuta, Zagreb: the main Hare Krishna temple in Croatia, a centre for Vedic study, festivals and vegetarian prasadam.
- Croat-Indian Society (Hrvatsko-indijsko društvo), Zagreb: a cultural association founded in 1994 that has organised Indian festivals and events with the Embassy of India.
- Embassy of India in Zagreb: not a place of worship, but it works with the Indian community and is a good contact for news of community gatherings.
Kvarner and Istria
- Hare Krishna Center Rijeka, Rijeka: an ISKCON centre that celebrates the Vaishnava festival calendar and hosts the city's annual Ratha Yatra.
- ISKCON Pula, near Pula: a rural ISKCON centre in Istria.
Other cities
Hare Krishna groups have also been listed in Split, Osijek, Varaždin and a few other towns, but we could not confirm current details for each one. If you live outside Zagreb, Rijeka or Pula, contact ISKCON Zagreb to ask about the nearest active group, or plan a home puja.
Temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead; check their websites and social pages. At ISKCON centres, the Diwali season is usually marked with lamp offerings, kirtan, a talk on the festival and a vegetarian feast, and Govardhan Puja is often celebrated with a large annakut of sweets and dishes offered to Krishna.
How Diwali is celebrated in Croatia
Most Hindus in Croatia today are recent arrivals: Indian professionals, students at the University of Zagreb and other universities, and a growing number of workers in several sectors. There are also Croatian devotees in the ISKCON community, and long-standing academic interest in India through the Indology department at the University of Zagreb. There is no history of indentured migration here, so Diwali traditions follow those of each family's home region in India, Nepal or the wider diaspora.
With no large mandir, Diwali in Croatia is mostly a home festival. Families clean and decorate the flat, make rangoli at the door, light diyas or candles on balconies and window sills, and perform Lakshmi and Ganesha puja on Sunday evening. Friends often gather afterwards to share sweets and dinner. Student associations and informal community networks sometimes hold a shared Diwali evening, and ISKCON centres open their doors to anyone who wants to join kirtan and prasadam.
Puja items such as diyas, kumkum and incense can be hard to find locally, so many families bring them back from trips home or order them online well ahead of the festival.
Sikh families in Croatia mark Bandi Chhor Divas on the same evening, remembering Guru Hargobind's release from Gwalior Fort, and Jain families observe Diwali as the day of Mahavira's nirvana. Nepali families, where present, celebrate Tihar, with its own days for crows, dogs, cows and Bhai Tika. All are welcome at most community gatherings.
Simple Lakshmi Puja at home
If there is no temple near you, a home puja is entirely traditional. A simple version:
- Clean the house during the day and set up a small altar facing east or north, with a red or yellow cloth.
- Place images or murtis of Lakshmi and Ganesha, a kalash of water topped with mango or betel leaves and a coconut, and a few coins or notes.
- Light a ghee diya and incense just before the muhurat. Begin with Ganesha: offer flowers, kumkum, rice and a sweet, and chant a simple Ganesha mantra.
- Invite Lakshmi with flowers, kumkum, haldi, rice, sweets and fruit. Chant Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah or a Lakshmi stotra you know.
- Perform aarti of Lakshmi and Ganesha together, with the whole family.
- Light diyas or candles at the front door, windows and balcony, then share prasad.
In Zagreb, aim to start between 4:50 PM and 6:34 PM. If you begin later, finish within Pradosh Kaal, which ends at 7:24 PM.
Practical tips for Diwali 2026 in Croatia
- Weekday: Lakshmi Puja on Sunday 8 November makes the main evening easy, but Govardhan Puja (Monday 9 November) and Bhai Dooj (Tuesday 10 November) fall on working days. Diwali is not a Croatian public holiday; check the official 2026 holiday list and ask your employer early if you need leave.
- Early sunset: Sunset is around 4:23 PM to 4:44 PM across Croatia on 8 November. Set up your altar in daylight so you are ready when the muhurat begins.
- Weather: November is cool and often damp inland, with windy bura or rainy jugo spells on the coast. Use enclosed lanterns or LED diyas on balconies.
- Fire safety: Many Croatians live in flats with smoke alarms and wooden fittings. Never leave diyas unattended and keep them away from curtains.
- Fireworks: Rules on buying and using fireworks are set by national and local authorities. Check the rules where you live; diyas and lights are a safer choice.
- Booking: If you want a priest or a group puja at a centre, ask early, as the community is small and help is limited.
- Cold weather sweets: Diwali sweets keep well in Croatian autumn temperatures, so you can prepare ladoos and namkeen a day or two ahead.
