Quick answer: in Hungary, Lakshmi Puja (main Diwali) is on Sunday 8 November 2026, and the Budapest muhurat is 4:33 PM to 6:15 PM Hungarian time. Dhanteras is on Friday 6 November, Naraka Chaturdashi on Saturday 7 November, Govardhan Puja on Monday 9 November and Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November. Hungary's Hindu community is small but well rooted, with temples in Budapest and in the countryside, so you can join a temple celebration or keep the puja at home.

Editor's note (1 November 2026): HinduTone calculated these local dates from Drik Panchang tithi times using Drik's own rules for each festival, and checked our method against Drik's published dates for 15 countries. The Lakshmi Puja muhurat is the Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna that falls within Pradosh Kaal, following the Drik method, worked out for each city's sunset. We do not list event schedules, because they change every year. Temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead; check their websites and social pages.

Lakshmi Puja muhurat explained

Lakshmi Puja is done in the evening on the day when Amavasya is present during Pradosh Kaal, the window that begins at sunset. In Budapest on Sunday 8 November, sunset is at 4:17 PM and Pradosh Kaal runs from 4:17 PM to 7:09 PM.

Within Pradosh, the most auspicious part is when Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna is rising. Vrishabha is a fixed (sthira) sign, and worship done in a fixed lagna is believed to make Lakshmi stay in the home. In Budapest the Vrishabha lagna falls from 4:33 PM to 6:15 PM, entirely inside Pradosh, so this is the muhurat we give.

If you cannot start in that window, because of work, travel or children, any time within Pradosh Kaal is still traditional and good. Light the diyas around sunset, then begin the puja itself as close to the Vrishabha window as you can.

Because November sunsets are early in Hungary, the whole window falls in the early evening. Families who work on Sunday can still finish in time, and those with small children will find it convenient.

Hindu temples in Hungary for Diwali

Hungary's Hindu population is small. The 2022 census counted a little over 3,000 Hindus, alongside a larger number of Hungarians who practise yoga or follow Indian spiritual traditions. We have confirmed the places below through official websites, the ISKCON centres directory, the Embassy of India and reliable local listings. Temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead; check their websites and social pages.

Budapest

  • Om Vishwa Guru Deep Hindu Mandir, Budapest – a Hindu temple used by the Indian community for festivals such as Ganesh Chaturthi and Navratri.
  • ISKCON Budapest (Hare Krishna Educational and Cultural Centre), District XIII – the city's main Hare Krishna temple, with regular Sunday programmes.
  • Amrita Sher-Gil Cultural Centre (Embassy of India), Budapest – not a temple, but it has held Diwali cultural programmes in recent years.

Rest of Hungary

  • Krishna Valley (Krisna-völgy), Somogyvámos, Somogy County – ISKCON's large rural temple community and eco-farm, south of Lake Balaton.
  • Nandafalva Hindu Temple, Balástya, near Szeged – a Vaishnava temple and community, consecrated in 2000.
  • ISKCON Eger, Eger – an ISKCON centre with weekly Sunday programmes, the nearest temple for readers in north-east Hungary such as Miskolc.

A new Hindu temple built with carved stone from India is under construction at Ozora in Tolna County. Check for news before planning a visit there. Readers in Debrecen, Pécs and other cities without a temple nearby can travel to one of the places above, or keep a simple puja at home with friends and family.

How Diwali is celebrated in Hungary

Hungary has no history of indentured migration from India. Its Hindu presence has two strands. One is the Indian community: students at Hungarian universities, many in medicine and engineering in Budapest, Debrecen, Szeged and Pécs, together with IT professionals and families who have settled in the capital. The other is a long-standing Hungarian Hindu community, mostly Vaishnava, which grew from the 1970s and 1980s and built temples such as Krishna Valley and Nandafalva.

For Indian families Diwali usually means cleaning and decorating the home, rangoli at the door, diyas on windowsills and balconies, new clothes and sweets shared with neighbours and colleagues. Student groups often organise a get-together with food and a cultural programme, and many people travel into Budapest for a temple puja.

At the ISKCON temples, Diwali programmes typically include kirtan, a talk on the story of Diwali, the offering of lamps and a vegetarian feast. Govardhan Puja is a particular highlight in Vaishnava temples, with a hill of sweets and food offered to Krishna and then shared as prasad. The Embassy of India's cultural centre has marked Diwali in past years with dance, music and talks open to Hungarians and Indians alike.

Sikh families in Hungary also mark Bandi Chhor Divas on the same day as Lakshmi Puja, and Jains observe Diwali as the day of Lord Mahavira's nirvana.

November in Hungary is cold, often grey and sometimes foggy, so most celebrations happen indoors. A lamp in the window is a simple way to share the festival with the street.

Simple Lakshmi Puja at home

If you cannot reach a temple, a short puja at home is entirely traditional. A simple order is:

  1. Clean the home and the puja area during the day; make a small rangoli at the entrance.
  2. Place images or murtis of Lakshmi and Ganesha on a clean cloth on a raised platform, Ganesha on Lakshmi's left.
  3. Set out a kalash of water with mango or betel leaves and a coconut, plus flowers, rice, kumkum, turmeric, sweets, fruit and a few coins or jewellery.
  4. Light the main ghee lamp and the diyas around sunset, at the start of Pradosh Kaal.
  5. Begin with Ganesha: a short prayer or the mantra Om Gam Ganapataye Namah.
  6. Worship Lakshmi with flowers, kumkum and rice, then offer sweets. Chant Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah, or read the Shri Suktam if your family does.
  7. Many families also honour Kubera, and worship their account books, laptop or tools of work.
  8. Finish with aarti (Om Jai Lakshmi Mata), share prasad, and place diyas around the home.

Follow your own family or regional tradition where it differs. Bengali, Odia and some other families worship Kali on this night instead of, or as well as, Lakshmi.

Practical tips for Diwali 2026 in Hungary

  • Weekdays: Dhanteras is a Friday and Lakshmi Puja a Sunday, so the main days are easy. Govardhan Puja (Monday) and Bhai Dooj (Tuesday) fall on working days; plan an evening visit or take leave early.
  • Public holidays: Diwali is not a public holiday in Hungary. Students should check exam and lab timetables with their university.
  • Early sunset: Sunset in Budapest is at 4:17 PM on 8 November. Set up the puja before you need to light the lamps.
  • Weather: Expect a cold evening. Keep candles and diyas indoors or in sheltered spots, away from curtains.
  • Fireworks: Rules are set by the authorities, so check before buying or lighting any, and respect your building's house rules.
  • Temple pujas: If you want a priest to perform a puja for your family, contact the temple early, as the Diwali weekend is the busiest time of the year.
  • Shopping: If you rely on Indian grocery shops for diyas, puja items and sweets, buy early in the week, as stocks can run low before the festival.
