Diwali 2026 in Brunei: Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday 8 November 2026, and the muhurat in Bandar Seri Begawan is 6:30 PM to 8:26 PM (Brunei time, UTC+8). The five days run from Dhanteras on Friday 6 November to Bhai Dooj on Wednesday 11 November, and the dates are the same in every town in the country. Timings for Kuala Belait, Tutong and other towns differ by only a minute or three.
Editor's note (1 November 2026): HinduTone calculated these local dates using Drik Panchang tithi times and Drik's own rules for each festival, and checked the method against Drik's published dates for 15 countries. The Lakshmi Puja muhurat is the Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna that falls within Pradosh Kaal, following the Drik method, worked out for each town's own sunset. We do not list event schedules, because they change each year and we cannot confirm them in advance.

| Day | Date | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Dhanteras | Friday 6 November 2026 | Day one. Buying new utensils, silver or gold, and lighting a lamp for Yama in the evening. |
| Naraka Chaturdashi | Sunday 8 November 2026 | Choti Diwali. Early-morning oil bath, remembering Krishna's victory over Narakasura. |

Naraka Chaturdashi and Lakshmi Puja fall on the same day this year. Lakshmi Puja muhurat explained
Lakshmi Puja is performed on the evening when Amavasya, the new-moon tithi, covers Pradosh Kaal. Pradosh Kaal is the period of about two hours and twenty minutes that begins at sunset. In Bandar Seri Begawan on Sunday 8 November, sunset is at 6:01 PM, so Pradosh Kaal runs from 6:01 PM to 8:26 PM. Amavasya began at 1:57 PM that afternoon, so the whole of Pradosh Kaal falls within it.
Within Pradosh Kaal, Drik Panchang prefers the time when Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna is rising. Vrishabha is a fixed (sthir) sign, and worship during a fixed lagna is traditionally believed to help Lakshmi stay in the home. In Bandar Seri Begawan, Vrishabha rises at 6:30 PM and is still rising when Pradosh Kaal ends at 8:26 PM, which gives the muhurat of 6:30 PM to 8:26 PM.
If you cannot start by 6:30 PM, any time within Pradosh Kaal, from 6:01 PM to 8:26 PM, is still acceptable in most family traditions. Many households light their lamps at sunset and begin the main puja once the muhurat starts. Your family priest or temple may follow a slightly different calendar; where they differ, follow them.
Hindu temples in Brunei for Diwali
Brunei is a Malay Islamic Monarchy, and its Hindu community is very small: a few thousand people, almost all of Indian or Nepali origin, many of them working in the oil and gas industry around Seria and Kuala Belait, in healthcare, education and business. There is no large public temple of the kind found in Singapore or Malaysia. We have only been able to confirm one place of Hindu worship, and we would rather tell you that honestly than pad the list.
Belait District
- Hindu temple, Gurkha garrison, Seria – a small temple on the grounds of the Gurkha regiments in Seria, served by a priest and used mainly by Nepali Gurkha families, with local Hindus also visiting for prayer. Because it is on a military garrison, access is restricted; do not simply turn up, and ask through the community associations below.
Community associations
The High Commission of India in Brunei lists several community groups that hold Diwali, Pongal and Onam gatherings each year. In practice, these associations are where most Brunei Hindus find a shared Diwali celebration:
- Bandar Seri Begawan Indian Association (Brunei-Muara District)
- Indian Association Belait (Belait District)
- Malayali Association, Brunei
- Telugu Association, Brunei
Temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead; check their websites and social pages. Membership is generally needed for association events, so contact them early. If you cannot reach a gathering, a home puja on Sunday 8 November is entirely proper, and is how most Hindu families in Brunei mark the night.
How Diwali is celebrated in Brunei
Diwali in Brunei is a quiet, home-centred festival. Most celebrations happen within families and among friends, with community associations holding a cultural evening or dinner close to the date. These typically include a lamp-lighting, a short puja or bhajans, classical and folk dance by children, and a shared vegetarian meal with sweets. South Indian families often call the festival Deepavali and begin the day with an early oil bath on Naraka Chaturdashi, while North Indian and Nepali families focus on the Lakshmi Puja evening.
Nepali Gurkha families in Seria observe the festival as Tihar, the five-day Nepali celebration that honours crows, dogs and cows and ends with Bhai Tika, when sisters bless their brothers. Tihar dates are set by Nepal's own calendar committee and usually match or sit close to the dates above.
Sikh families mark Bandi Chhor Divas on the same evening, remembering Guru Hargobind's release from Gwalior Fort, and Jain families observe the nirvana of Lord Mahavira. The High Commission also lists a Sikh association among Brunei's community groups.
Many families in Brunei open their homes to Malay, Chinese and expatriate friends during the festival week, sharing murukku, laddoos and other sweets, much as Bruneians share open houses at Hari Raya. Public displays are modest, and celebrations stay respectful of local customs.
Simple Lakshmi Puja at home
A home puja needs only a clean space, a few lamps and a sincere heart. This is a short, general vidhi; follow your own family tradition where it differs.
- Clean the house during the day and draw a small rangoli or kolam at the entrance.
- Set up a low table with a red or yellow cloth. Place images or murtis of Lakshmi and Ganesha, a kalash of water with mango leaves and a coconut, and some coins or new silver.
- Light diyas or oil lamps at sunset, around 6:01 PM in Bandar Seri Begawan, and place them at the door, windows and puja area.
- Begin the puja within the muhurat, 6:30 PM to 8:26 PM in the capital. Worship Ganesha first, then Lakshmi, offering flowers, kumkum, rice, incense and sweets.
- Chant simple mantras such as "Om Shri Ganeshaya Namah" and "Om Shri Mahalakshmyai Namah", or read the Lakshmi Ashtottara if you know it.
- Perform aarti, share prasad with the family and keep at least one lamp burning through the night if it is safe to do so.
Many families also worship Kubera, and business owners may honour their account books. If you are new to Brunei and do not have murtis, a printed image and a single lamp are enough.
Practical tips for Diwali 2026 in Brunei
- Weekdays: Lakshmi Puja falls on Sunday 8 November, which is a rest day in Brunei, so most people can be at home in the evening. Dhanteras falls on Friday 6 November, so plan any shopping for silver or utensils around that day. Govardhan Puja (Tuesday 10 November) and Bhai Dooj (Wednesday 11 November) are working days, so plan these for the evening.
- Public holiday: we could not confirm Deepavali as a Brunei public holiday; check the official 2026 holiday list.
- Sunset and weather: sunset is around 6:01 PM to 6:04 PM across Brunei. November falls in the wetter part of the year, and evening showers are common, so keep outdoor lamps under cover and have a few spare matches or a lighter.
- Fireworks: rules on fireworks and firecrackers are set by the authorities in Brunei. Check the current rules before buying or lighting any, and keep to diyas and electric lights if you are unsure.
- Shopping: puja items, Indian sweets and diyas can be limited in Brunei. Many families buy supplies in advance or bring them back from trips to Miri in Sarawak, Singapore or India.
- Book early: if you want a priest to perform a puja at home, or wish to attend an association programme, contact them well before the festival, as numbers are small and slots go quickly.
