Diwali 2026 in Hong Kong: Dates, Lakshmi Puja Muhurat and Hindu Temples
In Hong Kong, Lakshmi Puja for Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, with the Vrishabha Kaal muhurat from 6:08 PM to 8:06 PM. Here are the five festival dates, area-by-area times and the Hindu temples to know.
In Hong Kong, the main night of Diwali 2026 is Lakshmi Puja on Sunday 8 November, and the most auspicious window for the puja is 6:08 PM – 8:06 PM (Vrishabha Kaal). The festival opens with Dhanteras on Friday 6 November, Naraka Chaturdashi also falls on Sunday 8 November, Govardhan Puja is on Tuesday 10 November and Bhai Dooj closes the five days on Wednesday 11 November. The dates are the same across Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories, and the muhurat differs by no more than a minute.
Editor's note (1 November 2026): HinduTone calculated these local dates from Drik Panchang tithi times using Drik Panchang's own rules for each festival, and checked the method against Drik's published dates for 15 countries. The Lakshmi Puja muhurat follows the Drik method: the period when Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna, a fixed sign, is rising within Pradosh Kaal. All times are Hong Kong Time (UTC+8). We do not list event schedules, because temples set their own programmes each year.
Diwali 2026 dates in Hong Kong
| Day | Date | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Dhanteras | Friday 6 November | Day one: buying new utensils, gold or silver, and lighting a lamp for Yama in the evening |
| Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali) | Sunday 8 November | Early-morning abhyang snan (oil bath) remembering Krishna's victory over Narakasura |
| Lakshmi Puja (Diwali) | Sunday 8 November | The main night: worship of Lakshmi and Ganesha, diyas lit through the home |
| Govardhan Puja / Annakut | Tuesday 10 November | Offering of many foods to Krishna, recalling the lifting of Govardhan hill |
| Bhai Dooj | Wednesday 11 November | Sisters apply tilak and pray for their brothers' wellbeing |
Naraka Chaturdashi and Lakshmi Puja fall on the same Sunday this year. That is normal when Chaturdashi is current at dawn and Amavasya covers the evening: the morning oil bath belongs to Naraka Chaturdashi, and the evening puja to Lakshmi. Govardhan Puja then follows on Tuesday 10 November, as Drik's rules place it in Hong Kong this year.
For reference, the tithi timings in India (IST) are: Trayodashi from 10:30 AM on 6 November to 10:47 AM on 7 November; Chaturdashi until 11:27 AM on 8 November; Amavasya from 11:27 AM on 8 November to 12:31 PM on 9 November; Pratipada until 2:00 PM on 10 November; and Dwitiya until 3:53 PM on 11 November. In Hong Kong time, Amavasya runs from Sun 8 Nov, 1:57 PM to Mon 9 Nov, 3:01 PM.

Lakshmi Puja muhurat in Hong Kong explained
Three pieces of the evening sky decide the muhurat. The first is Amavasya, the new-moon tithi. Diwali's Lakshmi Puja is performed on the evening when Amavasya is current after sunset. In Hong Kong it begins at 1:57 PM on Sunday 8 November, so it covers that entire evening.
The second is Pradosh Kaal, the period of roughly two and a half hours that begins at sunset. On 8 November the sun sets in Hong Kong at 5:42 PM, so Pradosh Kaal runs from 5:42 PM to 8:16 PM. Lakshmi Puja is traditionally done within this window.
The third is Vrishabha lagna, the time when the sign of Taurus is rising on the eastern horizon. Vrishabha is a fixed (sthir) sign, and worshipping Lakshmi during a fixed lagna is believed to help her blessings stay in the home. In Hong Kong, Vrishabha rises inside Pradosh Kaal from 6:08 PM to 8:06 PM. That is the best window for the main puja.
If you cannot manage that window, perhaps because you are travelling back from work or attending a temple programme, any time within Pradosh Kaal (5:42 PM – 8:16 PM) is still considered appropriate. Many families light the first diyas at sunset, begin the puja inside Vrishabha Kaal and keep a lamp burning through the night.
Hindu temples in Hong Kong for Diwali
Hong Kong's Hindu community is small but long established, and its religious life gathers around a handful of places. We have confirmed the following. Temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead; check their websites and social pages.
Hong Kong Island
- Hindu Temple, Happy Valley – the main Hindu temple in Hong Kong, built in the early 1950s and run by the Hindu Association of Hong Kong. It is the centre of community festivals including Diwali, Navratri and Holi, and is a graded heritage building.
- Khalsa Diwan Sikh Temple, Wan Chai – Hong Kong's gurdwara, open to all. Sikh families mark Bandi Chhor Divas here on Diwali.
Kowloon (Tsim Sha Tsui)
- ISKCON Hong Kong (Sri Sri Gaura-Nitai Mandir), Tsim Sha Tsui – the Hare Krishna centre, which usually marks Diwali and Govardhan Puja with kirtan and Annakut offerings.
- Chinmaya Mission Hong Kong (Chinmaya Seva Ashram), Tsim Sha Tsui – a Vedanta centre running classes for adults and children, with a Krishna murti.
New Territories
We have not been able to verify an active public Hindu temple in Sha Tin, Tuen Mun or elsewhere in the New Territories. Families there usually travel to Happy Valley or Tsim Sha Tsui for the main festivals, or hold the puja at home. A home Lakshmi Puja, done with care at the right time, is complete in itself.
Smaller private shrines and community associations, including Nepali and Sindhi groups, also hold their own gatherings. The Consulate General of India in Hong Kong is also worth following for community announcements.
How Diwali is celebrated in Hong Kong
Indian merchants have been in Hong Kong since the mid-nineteenth century, many of them Sindhi traders who built businesses in import, export and textiles. Later came Punjabi, Gujarati, Marwari and South Indian families, and a large Nepali community many with family links to the Gurkhas who once served here. Government yearbooks have described a Hindu community of tens of thousands, a large share of Nepali origin. Sikh, Jain and Hindu families often share the season, each with their own observance.
Diwali is not one of Hong Kong's general holidays, so celebrations fit around the working week. This year Lakshmi Puja falls on a Sunday, which helps. Families clean and decorate their flats, draw rangoli at the door, and light diyas and strings of electric lights on balconies and windows. Sweets are made at home or bought from Indian shops in Tsim Sha Tsui and elsewhere, and exchanged between friends and colleagues.
Temple programmes in Hong Kong typically include a Lakshmi Puja and aarti, bhajans, cultural performances by children, and a shared meal. Many Indian businesses hold a Chopda Pujan or ledger puja for the new accounting year. Nepali families celebrate Tihar, with its own days honouring crows, dogs and cows, Lakshmi Puja on the main night, and Bhai Tika for brothers and sisters; the official Tihar dates are set by Nepal's calendar committee. Sikhs observe Bandi Chhor Divas, and Jains mark Lord Mahavira's nirvana on the same night.
Simple Lakshmi Puja at home
A home puja need not be elaborate. A simple sequence many families follow:
- Clean the home in the days before, especially the entrance and the puja corner. Draw a small rangoli at the door.
- Set a clean cloth on a low table or shelf. Place images or murtis of Lakshmi and Ganesha, with Ganesha on Lakshmi's right.
- Keep a kalash of water with mango or betel leaves and a coconut, plus flowers, rice, kumkum, turmeric, incense, sweets and a few coins or a piece of silver.
- Light a ghee or oil diya at sunset, then begin the puja within the muhurat (6:08 PM – 8:06 PM in Hong Kong).
- Offer prayers to Ganesha first, then to Lakshmi. Chant the Lakshmi mantra or read the Shri Suktam if your family uses it, and offer flowers, sweets and rice.
- Perform aarti together, then place lit diyas in every room, at the door and on the balcony.
Follow your own family's tradition or your temple priest's guidance where it differs. The intention and devotion matter more than any single item.
Practical tips for Diwali 2026 in Hong Kong
- Weekdays: Dhanteras is a Friday and Lakshmi Puja a Sunday, so the main days are kind to working families. Govardhan Puja (Tuesday) and Bhai Dooj (Wednesday) fall on working days; plan an evening visit or a quiet home observance.
- Sunset is early: the sun sets at 5:42 PM on 8 November. Have your puja space ready before you leave for, or return from, any outing.
- Weather: November is usually dry and mild in Hong Kong, good for balcony diyas, but keep lamps away from curtains and out of the wind.
- Fireworks: rules on fireworks and firecrackers are set by Hong Kong's authorities. Check them, and do not assume what is allowed elsewhere applies here.
- Book early: if you want a priest for a home puja or a sponsored puja at a temple, ask a few weeks ahead. Priests are in short supply during Diwali week.
- Building safety: many flats have smoke detectors and shared corridors; use enclosed diyas or electric lamps where open flames are not practical.
