Quick answer: in Myanmar, Lakshmi Puja (Deepavali) is on Sunday 8 November 2026. In the capital, Nay Pyi Taw, the Lakshmi Puja muhurat is 5:54 PM – 7:54 PM Myanmar Time. In Yangon it is 5:59 PM – 8:00 PM and in Mandalay 5:51 PM – 7:49 PM. The festival runs from Dhanteras on Friday 6 November to Bhai Dooj on Wednesday 11 November, and every city in the country shares the same dates.

Editor's note (1 November 2026): HinduTone calculated these local dates from Drik Panchang tithi times using Drik's own rules, and checked the method against Drik's published dates for 15 countries. The Lakshmi Puja muhurat is the Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna that falls within Pradosh Kaal, following the Drik method, worked out for each city's sunset. All times are Myanmar Time (UTC+6:30). We do not list event schedules, because temples and community groups set their own programmes each year.

Saturday 7 November carries no main festival in Myanmar. Trayodashi runs from 10:30 AM on 6 November to 10:47 AM on 7 November IST, so it is the Trayodashi of Friday evening that marks Dhanteras. Chaturdashi then runs until 11:27 AM IST on 8 November, which is 12:27 PM in Myanmar. That means the sunrise of Sunday 8 November still falls in Chaturdashi, for the Naraka Chaturdashi bath, while Amavasya covers the whole of that evening for Lakshmi Puja. Amavasya in Myanmar lasts from Sun 8 Nov, 12:27 PM → Mon 9 Nov, 1:31 PM. Pratipada ends at 2:00 PM IST on 10 November, so Govardhan Puja is on Tuesday 10 November, and Dwitiya runs until 3:53 PM IST on 11 November, which gives Bhai Dooj on Wednesday 11 November.

Lakshmi Puja muhurat explained

Lakshmi Puja is done on the evening of Kartik Amavasya, during Pradosh Kaal, the period of roughly two and a half hours that begins at sunset. Within Pradosh, the most favoured window is the time when Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna is rising. Vrishabha is a fixed (sthira) sign, and tradition holds that worshipping Lakshmi in a fixed lagna invites her to stay in the home.

In Nay Pyi Taw on Sunday 8 November, sunset is at 5:28 PM and Pradosh Kaal runs from 5:28 PM – 8:00 PM. Vrishabha lagna rises within it, which gives the muhurat of 5:54 PM – 7:54 PM. In Yangon, sunset is at 5:32 PM, Pradosh is 5:32 PM – 8:02 PM and the muhurat is 5:59 PM – 8:00 PM. In Mandalay, sunset is at 5:25 PM, Pradosh is 5:25 PM – 7:59 PM and the muhurat is 5:51 PM – 7:49 PM.

If you cannot begin inside the muhurat, Pradosh Kaal as a whole is still a proper time for Lakshmi Puja. Lighting diyas at sunset and finishing the main worship before the end of Pradosh is the usual practice.

Hindu temples in Myanmar for Diwali

Myanmar has a long-established Hindu community, most of it in Yangon and Mandalay. Many temples are small neighbourhood shrines that are not listed online, so the list below includes only places we could confirm through reliable sources. It is not a complete directory. Temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead; check their websites and social pages.

Yangon

  • Shri Kali Temple (Sri Kaali Amman), Little India, downtown Yangon: built by Tamil migrants in 1871 and known for its brightly carved gopuram and roof.
  • Sri Varada Raja Perumal Temple, Yangon: a Vishnu (Perumal) temple of the city's Tamil community.
  • Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (Embassy of India), downtown Yangon: the embassy's cultural centre, which hosts Indian cultural programmes, yoga and dance classes.

Mandalay

  • Sri Ganesh Temple, central Mandalay: a Ganesha temple that also has shrines to Shiva, Murugan, Durga, Vishnu, Lakshmi and Saraswati.

Across Myanmar

  • ISKCON Myanmar: the Hare Krishna movement has centres in several parts of the country, including a Jagannath temple at Myitkyina in Kachin State, and has run Food for Life meal programmes in Mandalay.

If you live in Nay Pyi Taw, Mawlamyine, Bago, Kalemyo or a smaller town, ask local Indian or Nepali-heritage families about the nearest shrine. Many celebrate at home, and a home puja is just as complete as one done in a temple.

How Diwali is celebrated in Myanmar

Most of Myanmar's Hindus descend from people who came from South Asia during British rule, when Burma was governed as part of British India until 1937. Tamil families are the largest group, and there are also Telugu, Bengali, Odia, Hindi-speaking and Gujarati communities, along with Hindus of Nepali (Gorkha) descent. The 2024 census counted roughly 0.6 per cent of the population as Hindu, mainly in Yangon and Mandalay. Their temples often show Burmese touches, and some house an image of the Buddha alongside the Hindu deities.

The festival is known locally as Deepavali, and Deepavali appears on Myanmar's official list of public holidays. For 2026 the government said it would announce the date separately, so check the official 2026 holiday list or the Ministry of Labour notice before you plan leave.

In Yangon's Little India, Tamil families usually mark the morning with an oil bath, new clothes and a visit to the temple, followed by murukku, adhirasam and other sweets shared with neighbours. North Indian families focus on the evening Lakshmi Puja, rangoli at the door and rows of diyas. Families of Nepali heritage may also keep Tihar customs, such as honouring crows, dogs and cows and the Bhai Tika between brothers and sisters. Temple programmes typically include abhishekam, special alankaram of the deity, bhajans and the distribution of prasadam.

Sikh families in Myanmar mark the same evening as Bandi Chhor Divas, and Jains remember the nirvana of Lord Mahavira. Buddhist neighbours light lamps a few weeks earlier at Thadingyut, Myanmar's own festival of lights, so the sight of lamps on doorsteps is familiar to everyone.

Simple Lakshmi Puja at home

You do not need a priest for a meaningful Lakshmi Puja. A short, general vidhi that suits most traditions:

  1. Clean the house during the day and draw a rangoli or kolam at the entrance.
  2. Set up a clean altar facing east or north with images or murtis of Lakshmi and Ganesha, a kalash of water topped with mango leaves and a coconut, and a plate of rice.
  3. Light diyas at sunset and place them at the door, windows and altar.
  4. Within your city's muhurat, begin with a prayer to Ganesha, then offer Lakshmi flowers, kumkum, turmeric, rice, coins or new money, sweets and fruit.
  5. Recite the Lakshmi Ashtottara or Shri Suktam, or simply chant "Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah" with devotion.
  6. Finish with aarti, share prasadam with family and neighbours, and keep a lamp burning through the evening if it is safe to do so.

  • Holiday: Deepavali is on the official holiday list, but check the government's announced date for 2026 before booking time off.

  • Temple pujas: If you want an archana or special puja in your family's name, ask the temple office a week or two ahead, as Deepavali evening is busy.
  • Travel: Check current travel advice and local conditions before visiting temples outside your own area.
