When is Diwali 2026? The five days at a glance

Diwali is a five-day festival set by the lunar calendar. Lakshmi Puja falls on the Amavasya (new moon) that ends the month of Ashwin in the amanta calendar used in South and West India, called Kartika Amavasya in the purnimanta calendar of North India. India dates, per Drik Panchang:

  • Dhanteras: Friday, 6 November 2026 (Dhanteras 2026)
  • Choti Diwali / Kali Chaudas: Saturday, 7 November 2026
  • Naraka Chaturdashi and Diwali (Lakshmi Puja): Sunday, 8 November 2026. Per Drik Panchang both fall on the same date this year: the Abhyang Snan before sunrise, Lakshmi Puja after sunset (why)
  • Govardhan Puja / Annakut / Bali Pratipada / Gujarati New Year: Tuesday, 10 November 2026 (9 November is Amavasya at sunrise in India)
  • Bhai Dooj / Bhau Beej / Yama Dwitiya: Wednesday, 11 November 2026

Abroad, Lakshmi Puja is also on Sunday 8 November. In the USA, Canada and the UK, Shukla Pratipada begins before local sunrise on 9 November, so Govardhan Puja falls on Monday 9 November and Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November there. Puja times differ by city: see the Lakshmi Puja muhurat for Indian cities, and the USA and UK city-by-city guides.

Because 8 November 2026 is a Sunday, many families can keep the full evening puja without the rush of a working day. For the full calendar and rituals, read the 5 days of Diwali 2026 explained.

Why Hindus worldwide celebrate Diwali

  • Sri Rama returns to Ayodhya: after fourteen years of exile and the defeat of Ravana, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana come home, and the city lights rows of lamps on the new-moon night. "Deepavali" means a row of lights.
  • Krishna defeats Narakasura: in the South and West the festival recalls Krishna and Satyabhama's victory over Narakasura; the pre-dawn oil bath on Naraka Chaturdashi marks it.
  • Goddess Lakshmi is welcomed: on Amavasya night clean, well-lit homes invite Lakshmi, worshipped with Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles (Lakshmi Puja vidhi).
  • Other traditions: Jains mark the Nirvana of Bhagwan Mahavira; Sikhs observe Bandi Chhor Divas and light the Golden Temple; Bengal and Assam keep Kali Puja; Nepal celebrates Tihar, with days for crows, dogs, cows and siblings.

Across all of them the message is the same: darkness (ignorance, ego, adharma) yields to light (knowledge, dharma and grace).

Diwali for the worldwide Hindu family

Diwali is kept with the same devotion in the USA and Canada (New Jersey, New York, California, Texas, Toronto, Vancouver), the UK (Leicester holds one of the largest celebrations outside India), Singapore and Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand, the Gulf, the Caribbean (Divali is a national holiday in Trinidad and Tobago), Fiji, Mauritius, South Africa, East Africa and Europe. Our Diwali around the world guide covers 30 countries, and the Deepavali guide for NRIs covers celebrating away from India.

Celebrating Diwali 2026 mindfully

  1. Clean and decorate: cleaning removes the old; then rangoli, flowers and lights.
  2. Lakshmi–Ganesha puja in the evening muhurat for your city (muhurat).
  3. Light clay diyas with ghee or oil, and follow local fire-safety rules.
  4. Share sweets and gifts; homemade Diwali sweets carry the most love.
  5. Give daan: Diwali is incomplete without sharing prosperity.
  6. Spend time together: tell the stories of Rama and Krishna to the children.
  7. Send these wishes to loved ones near and far.

Many cities restrict loud or polluting fireworks. Choose eco-friendly options, avoid plastic decorations and keep children, elders and pets safe. The true spirit of Diwali is the inner light, not noise.
