Quick answer: Kuber Puja 2026 is on Friday 6 November 2026, the evening of Dhanteras (Dhantrayodashi). Drik Panchang gives the puja muhurat for New Delhi as 6:02 PM to 7:58 PM, inside Pradosh Kaal (5:32 PM to 8:09 PM). Families worship Kubera, the treasurer of the gods, together with Lakshmi and Ganesha, often with the new metal item bought that day and the household's cash box or account books.

Dhanteras is the first day of Diwali. Most guides give a few lines to Kubera and move on to gold buying and the Yama Deepam. This page is only about Kuber Puja: when to do it, what to keep ready, a simple vidhi for home or a flat, and who Kubera is in Hindu tradition. For the rest of the day, see our Dhanteras 2026 guide and the Diwali 2026 complete guide.

Families who cannot finish inside the window simply complete the puja in Pradosh Kaal. Devotion matters more than the minute.

Who is Kubera?

Kubera, also called Vaishravana (son of the sage Vishrava), is the lord of the yakshas and the keeper of the treasures of the gods. In the Ramayana he is the elder half-brother of Ravana. He first ruled Lanka and owned the Pushpaka vimana, and Ravana took both from him. Kubera then made his home at Alaka, near Mount Kailasa, and is remembered as a devotee and friend of Shiva.

He is also one of the eight guardians of the directions (ashta dikpalas), the guardian of the north. That is why many families keep their cash box or locker in the north of the house and turn Kubera's picture to face the room from that side. In temple art he is usually shown with a round belly, seated at ease, holding a money pot or a bag of gems. Some images show him with a mongoose that spits out jewels.

Hindu tradition draws a clear line between the two deities of wealth. Lakshmi is the goddess of fortune, grace and abundance itself. Kubera is the guardian and treasurer who protects and distributes wealth. One well-known story places Lord Venkateswara himself in Kubera's debt for his wedding to Padmavati; see the Tirumala Balaji and Kubera loan story.

Why Kubera is worshipped on Dhanteras

Dhanteras (dhana trayodashi, the thirteenth day for wealth) opens the festival of Lakshmi. Families buy a new vessel, coin or ornament, clean the house and the place where money is kept, and invite prosperity in for the year ahead. As commonly explained, Lakshmi is prayed to for wealth to come, and Kubera for wealth to stay safe, grow steadily and be used well.

Customs vary by region. In Gujarat, Rajasthan and among trading families across North India, Kubera is worshipped with the cash box (tijori) and account books. In parts of Maharashtra he is honoured along with Lakshmi on Lakshmi Puja night. In Tamil Nadu some families keep a Lakshmi-Kubera puja on Diwali or on Fridays. Many Telugu families focus on Lakshmi on Deepavali and remember Kubera within the Lakshmi puja. None of these is more correct than another.

Kuber Puja vidhi: step by step at home

This is a simple order that many families follow. Family and regional customs differ, and your own tradition comes first.

  1. Clean the house in the day, especially the entrance and the corner where money and valuables are kept. Draw a rangoli at the door.
  2. After sunset, bathe or wash, wear clean clothes, and set up the altar. If you can, keep it in the north or north-east of the room.
  3. Place Ganesha, Lakshmi and Kubera on the cloth. Set the kalash, the lamp and the new item bought today in front of them. Put the cash box, purse or account books beside the altar.
  4. Light the lamp. Take a moment of sankalp: say your name, the date and that you are doing this puja for the family's wellbeing and honest prosperity.
  5. Worship Ganesha first with kumkum, akshata and a flower, chanting Om Gam Ganapataye Namah.
  6. Worship Lakshmi with kumkum, haldi, flowers and akshata, chanting Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah.
  7. Worship Kubera: offer sandalwood or kumkum, akshata, yellow flowers and coriander seeds if that is your custom. Many families pray to him in their own words to protect what the household has earned and to help them use it well.
  8. Mark the cash box or account book with a small swastika or 'Shubh Labh' in kumkum, and place a few coins or a flower on it.
  9. Offer naivedya. Then wave the camphor or ghee lamp in aarti and walk around the altar if space allows.
  10. Finish with a prayer for forgiveness for any mistakes in the puja. Share the prasad with the family.
  11. Afterwards, light the Yama Deepam outside the front door, facing south. It is a separate offering; see our Yama Deepam guide.

Mantras you can use

For Ganesha, the first worship:

ॐ गं गणपतये नमः॥

Advertisement

oṃ gaṃ gaṇapataye namaḥ||

For Lakshmi:

ॐ श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै नमः॥

oṃ śrīṃ mahālakṣmyai namaḥ||

Sri Suktam, the Vedic hymn to Lakshmi, has a verse that tradition reads as a prayer for Kubera's company. Commentators take 'devasakha' (friend of the gods) as Kubera, the friend of Shiva:

उपैतु मां देवसखः कीर्तिश्च मणिना सह ।
प्रादुर्भूतोऽस्मि राष्ट्रेऽस्मिन् कीर्तिमृद्धिं ददातु मे ॥ ७॥

upaitu māṃ devasakhaḥ kīrtiśca maṇinā saha |
prādurbhūto'smi rāṣṭre'smin kīrtimṛddhiṃ dadātu me || 7||

Meaning, in brief: may the friend of the gods (Kubera) come to me with fame and with the jewel; I am born in this land, may he grant me fame and prosperity. The full hymn is in our Sri Suktam guide.

Many families also chant a Kubera mantra from their own tradition. We do not print one here because we could not verify a standard text. Our Kubera mantra guide and 108 names of Lord Kubera cover the forms in common use.

In a flat, at work or abroad

  • A small shelf is enough. Keep the lamp on a steel plate, away from curtains, and never leave it unattended. Use an electric diya if your building does not allow flames.
  • Shop and office owners often do the puja at the counter or the cash drawer before closing on Friday evening.
  • If you are travelling or working late, a short prayer with a lamp later in the evening is fine. Many temples abroad also hold a Lakshmi-Kubera or Dhanvantari puja on Dhanteras; check your temple's own website.

Fasting on Dhanteras: a health note

Kuber Puja itself does not need a fast. Some families also keep the Shukra Pradosh Vrat that falls on the same day and eat after the evening puja. Anyone who is pregnant, diabetic, elderly, unwell or on regular medicines should not fast without a doctor's advice. Eating simply or keeping a fruit fast is an accepted choice in most families.

In Hindu tradition Kubera is the guardian of the north. Many families keep his picture, the cash box or the locker in the north part of the room, or so that the worshipper faces north or east. This is a traditional preference, not a strict rule.

Is there a Kubera mantra I can chant?

Many families chant a Kubera mantra taught in their tradition. We have not reproduced one here because we could not verify a standard text against our sources. You can chant Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah for Lakshmi and Om Gam Ganapataye Namah for Ganesha. Our Kubera mantra guide covers the commonly used forms.

Does Kuber Puja guarantee wealth?

No. In Hindu tradition Kuber Puja is a prayer of gratitude and an intention to earn and use wealth honestly. It is not a promise of money. Traditional teaching links Lakshmi's grace to honest effort, cleanliness, charity and good conduct.
