Quick answer: Deepavali 2026 in Tamil Nadu falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. From 2018 to 2025 the state allowed crackers on Deepavali day only from 6 AM to 7 AM and 7 PM to 8 PM, and only green crackers. As of 25 October 2026 HinduTone found no 2026 order, so those two slots are last year's rule, not a confirmed 2026 rule. District collectors have issued 2026 notices on temporary cracker shops, but none fixed separate bursting hours.

1. Tamil Nadu cracker timings: 2026 status and earlier years

Tamil Deepavali begins before sunrise with the oil bath (Ganga snanam), so Tamil Nadu has used a morning hour and an evening hour instead of the national 8 PM to 10 PM window. TNPCB said in 2024 that the state government had permitted 6 to 7 AM and 7 to 8 PM every year since 2018 (DT Next, 30 October 2024). In 2025 the government said in an official release that, as per the Supreme Court's order, bursting would be permitted only in those two slots (The New Indian Express, 15 October 2025). (Official text not independently checked by HinduTone.)

2. Green crackers (pasumai pattasu)

Only green crackers made to CSIR-NEERI formulations may be sold and burst, under the Supreme Court's 2018 judgment. Tamil Nadu's releases from 2023 to 2025 asked people to use green crackers that are less noisy and less polluting, and to avoid joined "series" crackers (sara vedi) (DT Next, 7 November 2023; The New Indian Express, 15 October 2025).

  • Check the box for the CSIR-NEERI green logo and scan its QR code before you pay.
  • Avoid loose, unbranded or imported crackers. On 6 October 2026 DT Next reported that the DRI had seized Chinese-origin fireworks worth over Rs 12 crore at Chennai Port, imported without DGFT and PESO authorisation.
  • Avoid series crackers and high-decibel bombs. Greater Chennai Police said in 2025 that crackers louder than 125 decibels may not be made, used or sold (DT Next, 21 October 2025).

Joined green crackers in 2026: on 30 September 2026 the Supreme Court said it would neither ban crackers completely nor allow them round the clock, and the Centre suggested a conditional relaxation for CSIR-NEERI's "next-generation joined green crackers" (DT Next, from PTI, 30 September 2026). The New Indian Express reported on 1 October 2026 that Sivakasi manufacturers welcomed a decision permitting their manufacture, but said large-scale production was unlikely before this Deepavali (The New Indian Express, 1 October 2026). HinduTone has not seen the order text; until the 2026 Tamil Nadu notice says otherwise, follow the earlier advice to avoid series crackers.

3. Rules that applied across Tamil Nadu

These points come from the state's 2024 and 2025 Deepavali guidance. They are the best guide until the 2026 notice appears. (Official text not independently checked by HinduTone.)

  • Only in the permitted slots. In 2025 the Greater Chennai Police booked 319 cases for bursting outside the permitted hours, with 35 in Tambaram and 38 in Avadi (DT Next, 21 October 2025).
  • Silence zones. Do not burst crackers near hospitals, schools, courts and places of worship (The New Indian Express, 15 October 2025).
  • Fire-prone areas. Stay away from huts, slums and easily flammable structures (DT Next, 21 October 2024).
  • Community celebrations with permission. The 2024 TNPCB advisory said prior permission from the district administration or local body is needed for collective celebrations, organised through welfare societies; the 2025 release encouraged community bursting in designated common areas with that permission (DT Next, 21 October 2024; The New Indian Express, 15 October 2025).
  • Low-noise crackers. Avoid loud crackers and continuous bursting.

The national baseline: what applies everywhere in India

Whatever Tamil Nadu announces for 2026, a few national rules apply across India. HinduTone read these in the original texts:

  • Green crackers only. In Arjun Gopal v. Union of India (judgment of 23 October 2018), the Supreme Court allowed only "improved" and "green" crackers with reduced emissions, and directed that sale be only through licensed traders. CSIR-NEERI (the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute) developed the green-cracker formulations and registers manufacturers; genuine green crackers carry the CSIR-NEERI green logo and a QR code.
  • Barium salts and joined crackers banned. The same judgment banned barium salts in fireworks and banned the manufacture, sale and use of joined firecrackers ("series crackers" or "laris").
  • No online sales (2018 direction). The 2018 judgment told e-commerce websites not to accept online orders for firecrackers.
  • The 8 to 10 PM default. Direction (xiv) of the 2018 judgment limited bursting on Diwali and similar festivals to 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM, and on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve to 11:55 PM to 12:30 AM, and said this applies throughout India. Some states have asked for, and announced, different two-hour windows; where a state has issued its own order, follow that order.
  • Night-time noise limit. Rule 5A(2) of the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000 (added in 2010) says sound-emitting firecrackers shall not be burst in a silence zone or during night time, which rule 2(j) defines as 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM.
  • Silence zones. Under the same rules, an area of not less than 100 metres around hospitals, educational institutions and courts may be declared a silence zone by the state government.
  • Police responsibility. The 2018 judgment made the local police responsible for ensuring that fireworks happen only at the permitted times and that banned crackers are not sold, with the Station House Officer personally answerable for violations.

Read the texts: Supreme Court judgment of 23 October 2018 (PDF) and Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000, CPCB consolidated text (PDF).

2026: the Supreme Court is hearing the issue again. On 30 September 2026 a bench said it would neither impose a complete ban nor allow round-the-clock fireworks, and would look for "specified time" windows; the Centre also asked it to consider a conditional relaxation for CSIR-NEERI's "next-generation joined green crackers" with reduced barium (reported by DT Next, from PTI, on 30 September 2026). On 12 October 2026 the Chief Justice's bench, hearing the Delhi-NCR pollution case, favoured designated hours and public awareness (reported by The New Indian Express on 13 October 2026). Official texts were not independently checked. As of 25 October 2026 HinduTone found no new order changing the 2018 directions on timings, barium or joined crackers; if the court issues one before Diwali, it will override what is written here.

In October 2025 the Supreme Court (M.C. Mehta v. Union of India, order of 15 October 2025) again allowed only NEERI-approved green crackers for Delhi-NCR, and noted cases where green-cracker QR codes had been sold to unregistered makers. That order was specific to Delhi-NCR, but it is a useful warning everywhere: scan the QR code and buy only from a licensed shop. (Supreme Court order of 15 October 2025, PDF.)

Puducherry is separate. Puducherry (including Karaikal) is a Union Territory, not part of Tamil Nadu, and sets its own rules; this page does not cover it.

5. Cracker sales and temporary shops

Selling crackers needs a licence under the Explosives Rules, 2008. In Tamil Nadu, temporary Deepavali shop licences are applied for online through e-Sevai centres under a single-window system and issued by the district revenue administration after field checks. The 2026 notices on district websites show the common pattern:

  • Deadline: 18 October 2026. Coimbatore's collector said on 22 September 2026 that this date was fixed on the orders of the Commissioner of Revenue Administration so that the process runs uniformly across the state (it replaced an earlier 21 October date). Tirunelveli and Mayiladuthurai (5 PM) also gave 18 October 2026 as the last date, and the Erode, Salem and Tiruppur notices ran until 18 October; The Nilgiris' notice of 16 September gave 10 October.
  • Licences issued: from 1 November 2026, according to Coimbatore's notice.
  • Fee and documents (Coimbatore): Rs 700 by e-challan, site plan, property tax receipt, building owner's consent, photograph, PAN, Aadhaar and family card.
  • Siting (Coimbatore): ground-floor shops of 9 to 25 square metres, at least 3 metres apart, with two exits, and away from hospitals, schools, places of worship, marriage halls, theatres, railway lines, water bodies and high-voltage lines.

Details in other districts may differ; see the links in the district table, and the Coimbatore page for the full notice.

Chennai Island Grounds: the Madras High Court was hearing a dealers' plea for space at Island Grounds in October 2026, and the government said a tender would soon be floated (DT Next, 9 October 2026). See the Chennai page for updates.

Sivakasi and prices: Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district makes about 90% of India's fireworks, with more than 1,070 licensed units (The New Indian Express, 14 October 2026). Manufacturers raised prices by 15 to 20% this season, and only about 60% of production was complete by late September (The New Indian Express, 28 September 2026). Unlicensed manufacture is dangerous: on 30 September 2026 a blast at a house where fireworks were being made killed three people in Namakkal district (DT Next, 1 October 2026). Never buy from homes or unlicensed sellers, and never store crackers in bulk at home.

6. Official websites to watch

The Tamil Nadu government, TNPCB, police and fire services websites did not load from the HinduTone server on 25 October 2026; PESO and the Supreme Court did. District collectorate websites (in the table above) were the most reliable place for 2026 notices.

12 safety tips for Diwali night

  1. Buy only from a licensed shop and keep the bill. Check for the CSIR-NEERI green logo and scan the QR code on the box.
  2. Burst crackers only in an open space, away from parked vehicles, dry leaves, thatched roofs, gas cylinders and electric lines.
  3. Keep a full bucket of water and a bucket of sand nearby. Put used sparklers and duds straight into the water.
  4. Wear close-fitting cotton clothes. Avoid loose silk or synthetic saris, dupattas and kurtas near flames.
  5. Children must always be supervised by an adult. Give younger children only hand-held sparklers, held at arm's length.
  6. Light crackers with a long agarbatti or incense stick, at arm's length, and step back at once. Never lean over a cracker.
  7. Never relight a dud. Wait several minutes, then soak it in water.
  8. Never burst crackers inside a home, on a balcony, in a stairwell or in a car park, and never throw them at people or animals.
  9. Keep pets indoors in a quiet room; street dogs, cows and birds are badly frightened by loud bursts.
  10. People with asthma, heart conditions, newborns and older relatives are best kept indoors with windows closed.
  11. For a burn, cool it under clean running water for several minutes and seek medical help. Do not apply ice, toothpaste or oil.
  12. Know the emergency numbers: 112 (all emergencies), 101 (fire) and 108 (ambulance in most states).
  13. Call 112 for any emergency in Tamil Nadu; it connects police, fire and ambulance.
  14. After the Deepavali oil bath, change into cotton clothes before handling crackers; oiled hair, skin and silk catch fire easily.

Frequently asked questions

What are the cracker timings in Tamil Nadu for Deepavali 2026?

As of 25 October 2026 HinduTone found no 2026 order. From 2018 to 2025 the Tamil Nadu government allowed bursting on Deepavali only from 6 AM to 7 AM and from 7 PM to 8 PM (TNPCB, reported by DT Next on 30 October 2024; Tamil Nadu government release, reported by The New Indian Express on 15 October 2025). Treat those slots as history until the 2026 notice is issued.

When is Deepavali 2026 in Tamil Nadu?

Sunday 8 November 2026. District collectors' 2026 notices for temporary cracker shops also give the festival date as 08.11.2026.

Are series (joined) crackers allowed in Tamil Nadu?

Joined crackers were banned nationally by the Supreme Court in 2018, and Tamil Nadu's releases in 2023 and 2025 asked people not to burst them. In October 2026 The New Indian Express reported that Sivakasi makers welcomed a Supreme Court decision on next-generation joined green crackers, but said large-scale production was unlikely before this Deepavali. HinduTone has not seen the order text, so avoid series crackers unless the 2026 state notice says otherwise.

Can I still apply for a temporary cracker shop licence in Tamil Nadu?

Probably not for 2026. Coimbatore's collector said on 22 September 2026 that, on the orders of the Commissioner of Revenue Administration, the last date across the state was 18 October 2026, and several other districts gave the same date (The Nilgiris gave 10 October). Applications went through e-Sevai centres. Ask your district collectorate if you have a pending application.

Does my district have its own cracker rules?

Most districts follow the state order on timings. HinduTone checked all 38 district websites on 25 October 2026: many published 2026 notices about temporary shop licences, but none published separate bursting timings. See the district table on this page.

Deepavali 2026 checklist for Tamil Nadu families

  • Check this page, your district collectorate website and the TNPCB website for the 2026 timing notice in the week before Sunday 8 November.
  • Buy only from a licensed shop (temporary licences are issued from about 1 November); keep the bill.
  • Look for the CSIR-NEERI green logo and scan the QR code on every box.
  • Skip series (joined) crackers and very loud bombs.
  • Agree a common bursting spot with your street or apartment association, and seek the permission past notices asked for.
  • Keep water, sand, a first-aid kit and a torch ready; note 112.
  • Plan the morning: oil bath first, then cotton clothes before handling crackers.
  • Keep pets, older relatives, babies and anyone with asthma indoors during bursting.
