Quick answer: Wednesday 4 November 2026 has no major festival, but it is the eve of Rama Ekadashi. In Hyderabad, Krishna Dashami ends at 11:03 AM and Ekadashi begins; the nakshatra is Purva Phalguni. Wednesday is Ganesha's day, and Dashami is the traditional day to prepare for tomorrow's fast.
Every vrat begins the day before. Today, a lighter meal, an early night and a prayer to Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, set the stage for Rama Ekadashi and for the five days of Diwali that follow. Think of it as tuning an instrument before a concert.

Religious significance
Wednesday (Budhavara) is widely kept for Ganesha, especially in Maharashtra, Karnataka and the Telugu states. Ganesha is worshipped first in almost every Hindu ritual, so a Ganesha prayer on the day before a major vrat is a fitting way to ask for an unobstructed observance.
Purva Phalguni nakshatra is associated in the traditional lists with Bhaga, a deity of good fortune and enjoyment, and its symbol is the front legs of a bed or couch: rest, comfort and happy family life. That makes an interesting pairing with Dashami, which asks us to step back from comfort a little before the Ekadashi fast. Today's reflection: enjoy what you have, and practise holding it lightly.
Puja vidhi
- Essential: after your bath, light a lamp before Ganesha, offer a flower or a few blades of durva grass, and chant the mantra below.
- Optional: modak or a piece of jaggery as naivedya, red flowers, and the Ganesha Gayatri if you know it.
- For the Ekadashi: in the evening, make a simple sankalpa before Vishnu or Krishna for tomorrow's fast.
No materials? Bow your head, picture Ganesha's kind face, and chant the mantra eleven times. Ask simply that tomorrow's prayer be free of obstacles.
Mantra for the day
Om Gam Ganapataye Namah (IAST: oṃ gaṃ gaṇapataye namaḥ). Meaning: "Om, salutations to Ganapati," with Gam as his seed syllable. Chant it 11 or 108 times before beginning any task today.
Vrat guidance: preparing for Rama Ekadashi
If you plan to fast tomorrow, eat one simple sattvic meal today and keep dinner light, avoiding rice and grains in the evening if that is your family custom. Drink enough water. Elderly people, pregnant women, children and anyone with diabetes or another medical condition should not feel obliged to fast; they can keep the day with prayer and a lighter, grain-free meal, and should consult a doctor. Our Rama Ekadashi 2026 guide explains the katha, rules and parana.
What you can do today
- Offer durva grass or a red flower to Ganesha before work.
- Eat a single simple meal and keep the evening light if you are fasting tomorrow.
- Buy fruit, milk and sabudana or other fasting foods for Rama Ekadashi.
- Make the sankalpa for the Ekadashi in the evening.
- Finish one more Diwali cleaning task; Dhanteras is on Friday.
- If you live in North America or Europe, check your temple's date for Rama Ekadashi (see the table below).
For families and children
Tell children the story of Ganesha and his brother Kartikeya racing around the world, and how Ganesha walked around his parents instead. Then ask them to help plan tomorrow's fasting-friendly meals for the adults; it teaches care without asking them to fast.

Frequently asked questions
Is Rama Ekadashi on 4 or 5 November 2026?
In India it is on Thursday 5 November 2026. Ekadashi tithi begins at 11:03 AM IST on 4 November, but the fast is kept on the day when Ekadashi prevails at sunrise, which is 5 November (Ekadashi ends at 10:35 AM that day).
What should I do on Dashami before an Ekadashi fast?
Many observers take a single, simple sattvic meal on Dashami, avoid rice and heavy food in the evening, and go to bed early. These are customs that help the fast; follow your family tradition and your health needs.
What is Vishti karana?
Vishti, also called Bhadra, is one of the eleven karanas (half-tithis). Many traditions avoid starting important new auspicious work during Bhadra. The data we use lists Vishti as today's karana but not its end time, so check a local panchang if you are planning such work.
Is there a festival today?
No major festival is listed by Drik Panchang for Hyderabad. It is an ordinary Wednesday, made special by tomorrow's Rama Ekadashi and the Diwali week that follows.
A closing thought
A good beginning is half the journey. May Ganesha clear the path for your Ekadashi and your Diwali.
