Religious significance

Govardhan Puja and Annakut

The Bhagavata Purana tells how the young Krishna persuaded the people of Braj to worship Govardhan Hill, which fed their cows, instead of Indra. When an angry Indra sent torrential rain, Krishna lifted the hill on his little finger and sheltered everyone beneath it for seven days. Govardhan Puja remembers that protection; Annakut ("mountain of food") is the offering of many dishes heaped before Krishna, later shared as prasad. In many homes a small Govardhan is shaped from cow dung or clay and worshipped.

Bali Pratipada

Vishnu as Vamana asked King Bali for three steps of land and, with them, covered the universe; pleased with Bali's generosity, he allowed the king to return once a year. Karnataka celebrates Bali Padyami, and in Maharashtra Padwa is also a day honouring the bond of husband and wife. Gujarati New Year and Dyuta Krida

In Gujarat the new year of the Vikram Samvat begins today as Bestu Varas; read our Gujarati New Year 2026 guide. Dyuta Krida recalls Shiva and Parvati's game of dice, a light-hearted custom of play within the festival.

Karthika Masam begins

For Telugu households, today opens a month of daily snanam before sunrise, evening deepam, Somavaram fasts and Shiva and Vishnu worship. Many begin hanging the Akasha Deepam from today. Plan the month with our Karthika Masam 2026 calendar day by day and Karthika Masam rules.

Puja vidhi

  • Before sunrise (Karthika, optional): the first Karthika snanam, with a little Ganga water in your bath if you have it.
  • Govardhan Puja (essential for those who observe it): make a small Govardhan from clay, cow dung or even a heap of food, decorate it with flowers, light a lamp, offer the food to Krishna and walk around it (parikrama), then share the prasad.
  • Annakut (optional): prepare as many simple vegetarian dishes as you can manage, even five or six, and offer them together.
  • Evening: the first Karthika deepam after the 05:41 PM sunset, at the doorstep or before the tulasi plant.

No materials? Place a little cooked rice and a sweet on a plate, offer it to Krishna with the mantra below, and share it with your family. Light one lamp in the evening for the start of Karthika.

Mantra for the day

Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya (IAST: oṃ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya). Meaning: "Om, salutations to the Lord Vasudeva (Krishna)." This twelve-syllable mantra is praised throughout the Bhagavata tradition and is open to all. Chant it 108 times while offering the Annakut.

What you can do today

  • Take the first Karthika snanam before sunrise (06:18 AM in Hyderabad) if you are keeping the month.
  • Shape a small Govardhan and offer a few home-cooked dishes to Krishna.
  • Visit a Krishna temple for Annakut darshan; check the temple's official website for timings.
  • Greet Gujarati friends with "Saal Mubarak" and Marathi friends with Padwa wishes.
  • Light the first Karthika lamp at sunset.
  • Make a sankalpa for the Karthika month: daily lamp, Somavaram fasts or Vishnu Sahasranama.

For families and children

Let children help shape the Govardhan hill from clay and add little cows and trees. Tell them how Krishna sheltered his whole village, and ask them who shelters them. Invite them to name the Annakut dishes and count them; it turns a ritual into a feast they remember.

Why is there a gap day between Diwali and Govardhan Puja?

Because Amavasya was still in force at sunrise on 9 November (it ended at 12:31 PM IST), Shukla Pratipada prevails at sunrise only on 10 November. Govardhan Puja follows the Pratipada, so it moves to Tuesday.

Does Karthika Masam start today?

Yes, in the amanta calendar used in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Maharashtra. Karthika Masam runs from today until the Amavasya of Tuesday 8 December 2026. The first Karthika Somavaram is Monday 16 November.

What is Bali Pratipada?

It is the day associated with King Mahabali, the generous asura king to whom Vishnu as Vamana granted a yearly return to visit his people. It is celebrated as Bali Padyami in Karnataka and as Padwa in Maharashtra.

What is Dyuta Krida?

Dyuta Krida (the game of dice) on this day recalls the tradition that Shiva and Parvati played dice on Kartika Shukla Pratipada. Some families play a friendly board or dice game as a festive custom; it is not about gambling.

When is the Gujarati New Year 2026?

The Gujarati New Year (Bestu Varas) is today, Tuesday 10 November 2026, the day after the Diwali new moon period ends. Families greet each other with "Saal Mubarak" and visit temples.

A closing thought

Krishna lifted a mountain to shelter the people he loved. Today, lift something for someone else, a meal, a burden, a kind word, and begin Karthika with that spirit.
