Monday 9 November 2026 is Kartika Amavasya, the day after Diwali. In Hyderabad Amavasya ends at 12:31 PM and Shukla Pratipada begins.
Quick answer: Monday 9 November 2026 is Kartika Amavasya. In Hyderabad, Amavasya ends at 12:31 PM and Shukla Pratipada begins; the nakshatra is Swati until 07:24 AM, then Vishakha. It is a day for remembering ancestors, a Monday Shiva puja and rest after Diwali, and the eve of Karthika Masam, which begins tomorrow in the Telugu calendar.
After the brightness of Diwali comes a gentler day. The new moon is still in the sky this morning, and many families use it to thank those who came before them: a lamp, a handful of sesame seeds in water, a meal given in their name. As a Monday, it is also Shiva's day, and for Telugu, Kannada and Marathi households it is the last day before the holy month of Karthika.

Religious significance
Every Amavasya is traditionally associated with the Pitris, the ancestors, and with snana (holy bath) and dana (charity). The Kartika new moon carries extra weight because it falls in the middle of the festival season and, in North India, inside the holy month of Kartik. In the North Indian purnimanta calendar Kartik began after Sharad Purnima, and Vaishnava devotees keep it as the Damodar month.
For the Telugu states, Karnataka and Maharashtra, which follow the amanta calendar, today is the threshold of Karthika Masam, the month most associated with Shiva and with lamps. Tomorrow, Shukla Pratipada, the pre-dawn Karthika snanam, the evening deepam and the month's vows begin. Read our Karthika Masam 2026 pillar guide and the Karthika Masam 2026 calendar day by day to plan the month.
Puja vidhi
- Morning (essential for those who observe Amavasya): bath before or soon after sunrise, then a lamp and a prayer for the ancestors before Amavasya ends at 12:31 PM.
- Pitru remembrance (optional, by family custom): tila tarpanam (water with black sesame) with the names of the departed, ideally guided by a priest; feeding a cow, crows or a needy person.
- Shiva (Monday): water or milk abhishekam to a Shiva lingam, bilva leaves and the mantra below.
- Evening: a lamp at the doorstep after the 05:42 PM sunset, and a few of the leftover Diwali diyas lit once more.
No materials? Sit quietly, say the names of your parents, grandparents and great-grandparents, thank them, and chant the mantra eleven times. Give the cost of a simple meal to someone in need.
Mantra for the day
Om Namah Shivaya (IAST: oṃ namaḥ śivāya). Meaning: "Om, salutations to Shiva, the auspicious one." On the eve of Karthika, Shiva's month, it is the natural chant; the same five syllables will carry you through all four Karthika Somavarams.
Vrat guidance
Some people keep a partial fast on Amavasya until the ancestral offering is complete, and some keep a Monday fast for Shiva. Both are optional. After the late nights of Diwali, rest is also a form of respect for the body; elderly people, pregnant women and anyone with a medical condition should not feel obliged to fast and should consult a doctor.
What you can do today
- Light a lamp for your ancestors before 12:31 PM and say their names with gratitude.
- Offer water to a Shiva lingam for the Monday.
- Give leftover Diwali sweets and food to those who need them, not to the bin.
- Clean up after the festival: collect used diyas safely and dispose of cracker waste responsibly.
- Prepare for Karthika Masam: read the rules, buy ghee or sesame oil and wicks for the month's lamps.
- Decide which Karthika practices you will keep: daily snanam, evening deepam, Somavaram fasts or Tulasi puja.
For families and children
Today is a good day to show children old family photographs and tell one story about each grandparent or great-grandparent. It turns remembrance into something warm. Let them help light the evening lamp and choose which corner of the home will hold the Karthika deepam tomorrow.

Frequently asked questions
Why is Amavasya on both 8 and 9 November 2026?
Amavasya tithi began at 11:27 AM IST on 8 November, in time for the Diwali Lakshmi Puja that evening, and it is still in force at sunrise on 9 November, ending at 12:31 PM IST. Observances that follow the sunrise tithi, such as the Amavasya bath and charity, are therefore kept today.
Is this Somavati Amavasya?
An Amavasya that prevails on a Monday is traditionally called Somavati Amavasya, and some panchangs may describe today that way. Drik Panchang for Hyderabad lists it simply as Kartika Amavasya, so follow your family priest or local panchang.
Is today Karthika Amavasya in the Telugu calendar?
No. In the Telugu amanta calendar this new moon ends the month of Ashwina, and Karthika Masam begins tomorrow, 10 November. The Telugu Karthika Amavasya, which closes the month, is on Tuesday 8 December 2026. The name Kartika Amavasya today follows the North Indian purnimanta calendar.
What can I do for my ancestors today?
Offer water with sesame seeds (tila tarpanam) if your family does so, light a lamp in their memory, feed a cow, crow or a person in need, or simply say their names with gratitude. A priest can guide a formal tarpanam.
When does Karthika Masam start in 2026?
In India, Karthika Masam (amanta) begins on Tuesday 10 November 2026 and runs until the Amavasya of Tuesday 8 December 2026.
A closing thought
We light lamps for the living on Diwali and for the departed on the new moon after it. Both are acts of love. Tomorrow, Karthika begins: may its lamps burn steadily in your home.
