Quick answer: Diwali fireworks in Scotland

How the Scottish rules differ from England and Wales

Scotland uses its own Fireworks (Scotland) Regulations 2004, amended in 2021. The permitted window is shorter at both ends: from 6 pm, not 7 am, and until 11 pm. gov.scot confirms the later cut-offs: midnight on Bonfire Night and 1 am on New Year's Eve, Chinese New Year and Diwali. The Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles (Scotland) Act 2022 added more offences that are already in force: buying fireworks for anyone under 18 (in force since 10 October 2022), carrying pyrotechnics in a public place (since 6 June 2023) and setting off fireworks in a Firework Control Zone (since 22 June 2023). Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles (Scotland) Act 2022

Some parts of the 2022 Act are still marked as prospective, not in force, on legislation.gov.uk: a fireworks licence to buy or use F2 and F3 fireworks, and limits on the days of sale and use. You do not need a fireworks licence for Diwali 2026 based on the official text we checked. Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles (Scotland) Act 2022

Firework Control Zones and Diwali 2026

A council can designate a Firework Control Zone after a public proposal and consultation, and must publish its decision at least 60 days before the zone starts. Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles (Scotland) Act 2022 Inside a zone, setting off fireworks is illegal everywhere, including private gardens, except F1 fireworks; organised public displays can still go ahead. Fireworks: the law - Firework control zones

For 2026, the only zones we could confirm are the City of Edinburgh's 14 zones, from 30 October to 8 November 2026. Sunday 8 November, Diwali day in HinduTone's calendar, is the last day. See the Edinburgh guide for the full zone list.

Glasgow's published zones (Pollokshields, Govanhill and Broomhouse) were for 1 to 10 November 2025; its 2026 zones were not confirmed when we checked. Read the Glasgow guide.

What the official Scottish sources say

Each point below is taken from the official source linked after it. Read the source itself before you rely on it.

Diwali 2026 dates and the fireworks rules

DateDay of the festival
Friday 6 November 2026Dhanteras (day 1)
Saturday 7 November 2026Naraka Chaturdashi / Choti Diwali (day 2)
Sunday 8 November 2026Diwali, Lakshmi Puja (day 3)
Monday 9 November 2026Govardhan Puja (day 4)
Tuesday 10 November 2026Bhai Dooj (day 5)

The regulations name "the day of Diwali" but do not define it. HinduTone's Drik Panchang-aligned UK calendar lists Sunday 8 November 2026. If that is the day you use, the legal window would be 18.00 to 01.00 overnight into Monday 9 November, unless you live in an active Firework Control Zone, where garden fireworks are banned on 8 November in Edinburgh.

Diwali week falls inside the general 15 October to 10 November selling season, so registered shops can sell throughout, within the 07.00 to 18.00 shop hours.

What we could not verify

These points are still open. Do not treat them as settled until the official authority confirms them:

  • The licensing scheme and the limits on days of sale and use in the 2022 Act are shown as not in force on legislation.gov.uk. Confirm with the Scottish Government if you see reports that they have started.
  • Firework Control Zones for 2026 were confirmed only for Edinburgh. Other councils, including Glasgow and Renfrewshire, could not be confirmed.
  • We have not seen the legal provision behind gov.scot's £5,000 penalty figure.

Diwali fireworks safety tips for Scotland

  • Keep a bucket of water or a hose ready, and soak every spent firework before it goes into the bin.
  • Read the label before dark. The product category and the safety distance printed on it are the legal and practical limits for your garden or yard.
  • Check for a fire ban or dry-weather warning on the day. A ban can be announced at short notice and overrides the normal rules.
  • Keep diyas and candles away from curtains, rangoli powder piles, saris and dupattas, and never leave a lit diya unattended.
  • Never go back to a firework that has failed to go off. Leave it well alone, then soak it in water once it is safe to approach.

Lawful ways to celebrate Diwali without fireworks

  • Clay diyas: a row of oil lamps at the door and windows is the heart of Deepavali and needs no permit. Stand each one on a metal plate or a tray of sand.
  • LED diyas and string lights: battery diyas are safe for balconies, dormitories, rented flats and anywhere open flames are restricted.
  • Rangoli: a coloured-powder, rice-flour or flower rangoli at the entrance welcomes Lakshmi and gives children a creative part in the festival.
  • Temple and community celebrations: most Hindu temples and community associations hold Lakshmi Puja, aarti and cultural programmes during Diwali week; check their own website or notice board for the 2026 schedule.
  • Authorised public displays: a professional display run under a permit or licence gives the family a fireworks moment without the legal risk.
  • Quiet celebrations: music, bhajans, a diya-lit dinner or a lantern walk on your own property avoid noise complaints and fire risk.
