Divine Spectacle Illuminates Ram Nagari with 26.17 Lakh Diyas

Ayodhya, October 19, 2025 – The sacred city of Ayodhya witnessed an unprecedented spiritual celebration as the ninth edition of Deepotsav created history by setting not one but two Guinness World Records. The holy banks of the Saryu River transformed into a celestial canvas of light, with over 26.17 lakh (2.6 million) earthen lamps illuminating 56 ghats in a magnificent tribute to Lord Ram’s homecoming.

Breaking Records: A Night of Historic Achievements

Record 1: Largest Display of Oil Lamps

Ayodhya set a new Guinness World Record with 26,17,215 diyas lit simultaneously across Ram Ki Paidi and the ghats along the Saryu River. The record was officially verified by Guinness World Records representatives using advanced drone technology for accurate counting.

Record 2: Most People Performing Aarti Simultaneously

In a synchronized display of devotion, 2,128 Vedacharyas performed aarti together, creating a spiritual spectacle that resonated across the entire city. This achievement was jointly accomplished by the UP Tourism Department, Ayodhya Administration, and the Saryu Aarti Samiti.

Guinness World Records adjudicator Richard Stenning announced amid thunderous applause: “Today we have witnessed an amazing display — 26,17,215 oil lamps. It is officially a Guinness World Record. Every year this is getting more and more incredible. It is truly spectacular and an honour to be here.”

The Magnificent Preparations

Modern Technology Meets Ancient Tradition

The evening featured a spectacular choreographed musical drone show, laser mapping, and light projections narrating the story of Lord Ram, adding contemporary brilliance to the timeless celebration.

The Spiritual Significance

Celebrating Lord Ram’s Return

Deepotsav commemorates the sacred moment when Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and his victory over demon king Ravana. The citizens of ancient Ayodhya welcomed their beloved king by lighting countless diyas, a tradition that continues to this day with even greater magnificence.

Message from Religious Leaders

Mahamandaleshwar Vishnu Das Ji Maharaj described the morning rituals: “We performed puja following Swasti mantras and sacred rules. First, we placed a lamp for Lord Ram, followed by one for the Saryu, considered the elder sister of Ram in the scriptures. Lamps were also placed for Hanuman Ji, Mata Adi Shakti Maa Bhagwati Sita Ji, and the entire Ram Darbar.”

Saint Diwakaracharya Ji Maharaj called Diwali a special festival and urged people to adopt Swadeshi products, stating: “Not only the saints but also the common people of Ayodhya, people across India, are actively participating in this festival, contributing selflessly in the service of Lord Ram.”

Ayodhya’s Transformation Under CM Yogi’s Vision

The Deepotsav, envisioned under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s leadership, has become a beacon of faith, unity, and devotion, symbolising Ayodhya’s revival as a global center of spirituality and culture.

Growth Over Nine Years

When Chief Minister Adityanath inaugurated the first Deepotsav in 2017, 1.71 lakh diyas were lit. This year’s celebration saw that number grow to an astounding 26.17 lakh diyas – a 15-fold increase reflecting Ayodhya’s emergence as a global spiritual destination.

Previous Records

In 2024, Ayodhya lit approximately 22 lakh diyas. The 2025 edition has surpassed all previous achievements, with earlier celebrations also earning Guinness World Records, including a 2023 record of 6,06,569 earthen lamps.

Ensuring a Safe and Smooth Celebration

Security and Administrative Arrangements

Divisional Commissioner Rajesh Kumar confirmed that all arrangements- including security, sanitation, and lighting- were in place. Police forces and magistrates were deployed across the ghats to ensure smooth conduct.

Food Safety and Access Control

Volunteers were provided ID cards and special T-shirts, and access to the ghats was only allowed with proper identification. Food safety teams were also actively monitoring the festival areas.

Drone-Assisted Verification

The Guinness World Records team employed sophisticated drone technology to conduct accurate counting of the diyas, ensuring precise verification of the world record attempt. The area was divided into segregated zones, each overseen by two stewards who ensured all lamps were lit correctly and tasks were performed according to protocol.

Temple Illuminations and City Beautification

More than 41 major temples across Ayodhya were decorated with special lighting themes, including:

  • Hanuman Garhi
  • Kanak Bhawan
  • Dashrath Mahal
  • Nageshwarnath Temple

The entire city was beautified with floral gates, rangolis, LED arches, and decorative lighting, transforming every corner of Ayodhya into a living temple of light.

Tourism and Pilgrimage Boost

The grand celebration attracted thousands of devotees and tourists from across India and around the world. The festival has significantly boosted Ayodhya’s profile as a major pilgrimage and tourism destination, with:

  • Direct flights to Maharishi Valmiki International Airport (Ayodhya)
  • Enhanced connectivity through Ayodhya Dham Junction railway station
  • Premium accommodation and travel packages offered by various tour operators
  • VIP seating arrangements and priority darshan facilities at Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir

The Message of Light Over Darkness

This year’s event once again underscored the message of light triumphing over darkness- marking Lord Ram’s victorious return to Ayodhya and celebrating the eternal triumph of good over evil.

The spectacular celebration represents not just a festival, but a powerful symbol of India’s cultural renaissance, showcasing how ancient traditions can be celebrated with contemporary grandeur while maintaining their spiritual essence.

Looking Forward

With over 26 lakh diyas illuminated, international recognition on the horizon, and mass citizen participation, Deepotsav 2025 stands as one of the grandest celebrations in Ayodhya’s history- reflecting the city’s transformation into a global cultural destination.

As the sacred flames of millions of diyas continue to illuminate Ayodhya’s spiritual landscape, the Deepotsav has firmly established itself as one of the most iconic cultural and religious events in India, bringing together faith, tradition, and modernity in a breathtaking celebration of light.
