How to read a muhurtham

  • The day runs from sunrise to sunrise. In a panchang a day starts and ends at sunrise, so a window shown under 21 November that ends at "5:54 AM, 22 Nov" belongs to the night of the 21st. Drik adds the next date to any time after midnight.
  • Nakshatra and tithi. Each window is listed with the nakshatra (lunar mansion) and tithi (lunar day) in force. Where two are shown, the window spans a change from one to the next.
  • The place matters. Times depend on local sunrise. These are for New Delhi. Hyderabad, Chennai or Bengaluru can differ, and abroad the dates themselves can change. Drik lets you switch the city on the same pages.
  • A window is not the ceremony time. For a wedding the purohit fixes the lagna (the exact moment for the mangalyadharana or pheras) inside a good window, after matching the couple's horoscopes.
  • Traditions differ. Telugu panchangams, the family's own customs and regional rules (for example on Chaturmas or Karthika Pournami, Tuesday 24 November) can rule a date in or out. When the panchangam and your purohit disagree, follow your purohit.
