Mahabhairab Temple, Tezpur
Shiva (as Mahabhairab) temple · Tezpur, Sonitpur, Assam, India
The Mahabhairab (Mahabhairav) Temple is a Shiva temple on a hillock to the north of Tezpur town, headquarters of Sonitpur district, on the north bank of the Brahmaputra in Assam. It is one of the best-known shrines in a town that Assamese tradition links with the legend of King Banasura.
According to the Sonitpur district administration, the temple is believed to have been founded by King Bana with a Shiva linga. It was originally a stone temple; the present building is of concrete. Today it is managed by the government through a committee headed by the Deputy Commissioner.
Faith & Tradition
Religious Significance of Mahabhairab Temple, Tezpur
Assam Tourism describes Tezpur as the legendary capital of Banasura, a great devotee of Shiva, whose daughter Usha fell in love with Aniruddha, grandson of Krishna. In the story, when Krishna came to free Aniruddha, Shiva fought on Bana's side, and the battle is said to have given the town its name, 'city of blood'. The Mahabhairab Temple belongs to this tradition: devotees believe it was Bana's own shrine to Shiva.
The Ministry of Tourism's Incredible India page describes the deity as Shiva in his fierce form and calls the stone linga the largest in the world. No measured survey was found to confirm this, so it should be read as a devotional description. Wikipedia also records a belief that the linga slowly grows over the years; this is a matter of faith, not a verified fact.
Wikipedia notes that pigeons are released at the temple as part of rites for ancestors, symbolising the liberation of their spirits, and that laddus prepared with bhang are offered as prasad at Maha Shivaratri.
Heritage
History of Mahabhairab Temple, Tezpur
Apart from the Bana legend, no firm founding date is recorded in official sources. The Sonitpur district administration and The Assam Tribune both state that in later centuries the Ahom kings granted devottar (temple) land and appointed priests and attendants (paiks) to look after the temple, with management in the hands of an official called the Bordoloi or Borthakur.
The district administration says the earlier stone temple has been replaced by a concrete structure, and The Assam Tribune, quoting a priest, describes it as renovated with cement concrete. Management passed to a government-appointed committee headed by the Deputy Commissioner of Sonitpur, which still runs the temple's affairs.
Tezpur has several old Shiva shrines. The Assam Tribune lists Mahabhairab among the town's Shiva temples, including Ketekeswar, Haleswar and Naleswar, whose committees jointly prepare for the annual Shivaratri mela.
Architecture and sacred features
The present temple is a modern concrete building on the site of the earlier stone shrine. Incredible India describes visitors climbing a flight of steps to the hilltop shrine, which commands views over the surrounding landscape.
