Religious Significance of Jagannath Temple, Ahmedabad

The temple traces its origin to a line of sadhus. Its own history page says that about 460 years ago the site was a forest beside the Sabarmati, where a wandering sadhu, Hanumandasji, settled and installed an image of Hanuman (Maruti) that is still worshipped. His successor, Sarangdasji, a devotee of Jagannath, went on pilgrimage to Puri, where, according to the temple's tradition, Jagannath instructed him in a dream to return to Ahmedabad and install the images of the divine trinity. The Maruti shrine thus became the Jagannath temple.

Besides worship, the temple is known for its service activities. The AMC heritage portal mentions a kitchen that feeds the needy, a dharamshala, an Ayurvedic centre, a gaushala (cow shelter) and the temple's elephants. The temple's own website lists a free food service (sadavrat), a Panchakarma hospital and the gaushala among its activities.

The Rath Yatra is one of the largest religious processions in western India. An IANS report of 2025 describes it as the second largest in the country after Puri; the AMC heritage portal and Wikipedia call it the third largest, after Puri and Kolkata.

History of Jagannath Temple, Ahmedabad

According to the temple's history, the third mahant was Balmukunddasji and the fourth, Narsinhdasji, who renovated the temple, developed the gaushala and started the sadavrat to give two meals a day to the needy without distinction. He was given the title Mahamandaleshwar at the 1957 Kumbh Mela at Prayag. Later mahants were Sevadasji and Ramharshdasji, and the present head is Mahamandaleshwar Mahant Rameshwardasji. An IANS feature credits Mahant Narsinhdasji with the idea of a Rath Yatra in Ahmedabad modelled on Puri.

The temple's age is given differently in different sources: about 460 years on the temple's website, about 450 years on the AMC heritage portal, and about 400 years in All India Radio reports. The temple says the whole complex was renovated between 1996 and 2000.

The Rath Yatra has grown from modest beginnings in the late 19th century, IANS notes, into an event that draws very large crowds, with heavy security arrangements. All India Radio reported that the 149th Rath Yatra set out from the temple in July 2026.

Architecture and sacred features

According to the temple, the 1996–2000 renovation placed the images of Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra on a raised pedestal called the Ratna-vedi, along with Shridevi and Bhudevi, with an image of Garuda in front facing the deities. A marble statue of Mahant Narsinhdasji stands near the Garuda, and a continuously burning dhuni (sacred fire) marks the seat of the mahant. Opposite the main temple are the rathkhana (chariot house), residences for sadhus and samadhis. The AMC heritage portal notes that old chariots are kept for visitors to see.
