Chintamani Ganapati Temple, Theur

Ganesha as Chintamani (self-manifested, trunk turned to the left) temple · Theur, Pune, Maharashtra, India

The Chintamani Ganapati Temple at Theur, in the Haveli taluka of Pune district, is one of the Ashtavinayak, the eight shrines of Ganesha in Maharashtra that pilgrims visit as a circuit. Incredible India, the Union tourism ministry's site, places it about 25 km from Pune, on a site bounded by the Mula river on three sides, close to where the Mula-Mutha meets the Bhima.

Maharashtra Tourism counts Theur as the fifth temple of the pilgrimage and links it with peace of mind and freedom from worry (chinta). The present building dates largely from the 18th century and is closely associated with the Ganapatya saint Morya Gosavi of Chinchwad and with the Peshwa Madhavrao I, who spent his last days here. Wikipedia records that it is administered by the Chinchwad Devasthan Trust, which also runs the Morgaon and Siddhatek Ashtavinayak temples.

Faith & Tradition

Religious Significance of Chintamani Ganapati Temple, Theur

The temple's legends come from the Mudgala Purana, as summarised by Wikipedia and by the Heritage Temples documentation project of Deccan College scholars. In the best known, the sage Kapila owned the wish-fulfilling gem Chintamani, which a greedy prince named Gana seized from him. Kapila prayed to Ganesha, who defeated Gana and returned the gem; the sage then asked for the god's presence instead, and Ganesha is believed to have stayed at Theur under the name of the jewel. Another legend holds that Brahma meditated here to steady his restless mind, and the village name is traditionally derived from sthavara, 'stable'. A third tells of Indra worshipping Ganesha under a kadamba tree to be freed from the sage Gautama's curse, which is why the place is also called Kadambapur.

Like the other Ashtavinayak images, the deity is regarded as self-manifested (swayambhu). Maharashtra Tourism and the Heritage Temples project describe a seated image facing east with its trunk turned to the left, the eyes set with red gems and diamonds; Wikipedia adds that it is smeared with sindoor, so that few features apart from the head and trunk can be seen.

Although Theur is prescribed as the fifth stop of the Ashtavinayak circuit, Wikipedia notes that many pilgrims visit it second, straight after Morgaon, because the route is more convenient.

History of Chintamani Ganapati Temple, Theur

Theur is believed to have been a Ganapatya centre since early times. According to the Heritage Temples project, Morya Gosavi came here on his guru's instruction and performed a 42-day penance; tradition says Ganesha appeared to him at its end, and a spot on the riverbank is still revered as his seat. The same source says that Morya Gosavi's son, Chintamani Maharaj Deva, rebuilt the temple, probably in the 16th or 17th century, and that its importance grew under his descendants Narayana Maharaj Deva and Dharanidhar Maharaj Deva. Wikipedia attributes the present temple to Morya Gosavi or his descendant Dharanidhar and says the exact date is unknown.

In the 18th century the Ganesha temples around Pune received patronage from the Peshwas of the Maratha state, who worshipped Ganesha as their family deity. Madhavrao I, Peshwa from 1761 to 1772, built the teakwood hall in front of the shrine and, according to Wikipedia, visited the temple before and after his campaigns. He was brought to Theur during his final illness and died here in 1772. Wikipedia and the Heritage Temples project also record that Chimaji Appa, brother of the Peshwa Bajirao I, presented the large European bell that hangs in the temple, which he had taken from the Portuguese after capturing Vasai.

The temple remains under the Chinchwad Devasthan Trust. In 2024 the Pune Pulse reported that the trust had stopped a paid 'VIP darshan' queue at Theur after a devotee sent a legal notice objecting to it.

Architecture and sacred features

The temple stands inside an enclosure wall with its main gateway on the north, which Wikipedia notes is small for the size of the temple, while the image inside faces east. It has three parts: a wooden hall (mandapa), a stone assembly hall (sabha mandapa) and the sanctum. The wooden hall built by Madhavrao contains a black stone water fountain, mentioned by Maharashtra Tourism and Incredible India, and the Portuguese bell hangs in the courtyard. The Heritage Temples project describes the exterior as plain, with the shikhara restored in brick, and dates the overall structure to the 18th century.

Smaller shrines in the complex include those of Mahadeva (Shiva), Vishnu-Lakshmi and a south-facing Hanuman. A Ganesha image called Lambodara stands to the west, behind the main temple, and the Heritage Temples project notes hero stones near the Mahadeva shrine, a stone road laid by the Peshwas from the main gate to the river, and an oil painting of Madhavrao in one of the cloisters. Behind the temple is the Peshwa wada, once Madhavrao's residence, from which Wikipedia says the temple's daily affairs are now managed.
