Jagat Shiromani Temple, Amer

Krishna (as Meera's Giridhar Gopal) with Meera Bai; four-armed Vishnu temple · Amer, Jaipur, Rajasthan, India

Jagat Shiromani Temple is a Vaishnava temple in the old town of Amer, below Amer Fort and about 15 km from the centre of Jaipur, Rajasthan. It was built between 1599 and 1608 by Queen Kanakavati, a wife of Raja Man Singh I of Amer, in memory of their son Jagat Singh, and its name preserves his.

The temple is best known because Krishna is worshipped here together with the poet-saint Meera Bai, rather than with Radha or Rukmini as in most Krishna temples. Local tradition, reported by Dainik Bhaskar and ETV Bharat, holds that the image of Krishna is the very one Meera worshipped in Mewar. Above the Krishna and Meera images is a four-armed Vishnu, the deity for whom the temple was originally built.

Religious Significance of Jagat Shiromani Temple, Amer

Meera Bai, whom Wikipedia describes as a 16th-century mystic poet, is one of the best-loved saints of the bhakti movement, known for her songs to Krishna as Giridhar Gopal. According to the temple's priest, quoted by ETV Bharat in 2021, Jagat Shiromani is the temple of Meera's Giridhar Gopal. Dainik Bhaskar reports the tradition that the image was the one Meera worshipped at Chittorgarh after her marriage, that it was later brought to Amer to protect it from attack, and that an image of Meera was then made and ritually 'married' to Krishna. A Jaipur historian quoted by ETV Bharat says Man Singh brought the image from Chittor after his campaign there. Dainik Bhaskar notes that historians hold differing views about the image's origin, so the link with Meera is best understood as a strong local tradition.

ETV Bharat also reports a story told by guides: that the queen felt a temple to Vishnu alone would not keep her son's memory alive for centuries, and that Meera's Krishna was installed so that the shrine would be distinctive. The old palanquin in which, tradition says, the images were brought is kept in the temple, and on Jaljhulni Ekadashi, according to ETV Bharat, Krishna is carried in it to a nearby lake for a ritual bath.

Wikipedia notes that the temple is visited by devotees of Krishna and of Meera, and that Janmashtami is celebrated here with special darshan and devotional singing.

History of Jagat Shiromani Temple, Amer

Dainik Bhaskar, ETV Bharat and Wikipedia agree that Queen Kanakavati began the temple in 1599 and that it was completed in 1608 after about nine years of work. Wikipedia's article on Man Singh I records that he ruled the Kachhwaha kingdom of Amer from 1589 to 1614 and served as a commander in the Mughal army under Akbar, so the temple was built while Amer was his capital.

ETV Bharat, citing a guide, records figures from the period for the cost of the three main parts of the complex: the sanctum, the Garuda pavilion and the gateway. In recent decades the temple has also become known as a film location; both newspapers mention that scenes for films such as Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Dhadak were shot here.

Architecture and sacred features

The temple is entered through a carved marble torana (ceremonial gateway) flanked by elephant figures. Dainik Bhaskar describes it as a fine example of the early 17th-century Mahameru type of temple, three storeys high, with the sanctum set behind a hall (mandapa) of lattice-like pillars built of red stone; ETV Bharat mentions white marble and black stone in the structure, and carvings of elephants, horses and scenes from the Puranas high on the walls. Murals decorate the walls and ceilings.

Facing the sanctum is a separate pillared pavilion containing a large image of Garuda, Vishnu's mount, shown with folded hands. Wikipedia describes the style as a North Indian Nagara temple with some Mughal-period influence, built of local sandstone and marble.
