According to tradition, Anjaneya, seated in yoga, helped King Indradyumna kill a demon at the bidding of Narasimha (Ranipet District Administration; Dinamalar). The district administration names the demon Nikumban, while Dinamalar names him Kumbhodharan (Ranipet District Administration; Dinamalar).
In the historical record, the district administration notes a 17th-century inscription on the small hill and a 14th-century inscription on the big hill (Ranipet District Administration). The town's older name, Kadigachalam or Kadigasalam, is linked by the district administration to the tradition that the Lord appeared to the seven sages within a kadigai, a short span of time (Ranipet District Administration; Sholingar Municipality).
