Spiritual Importance of Amalaki (Rangbhari) Ekadasi

According to Padma Purana and Brahmanda Purana, Lord Vishnu declared: “On Amalaki Ekadasi, I personally reside inside the Amla tree. Whoever worships this tree with devotion attains the fruit of performing thousands of Ashwamedha Yagnas and donates millions of cows.”

This Ekadasi is also called Papanasini Ekadasi (destroyer of all sins) and Rangbhari Ekadasi because it marks the joyous beginning of Holi celebrations, especially in Kashi (Varanasi).

The holy Amla tree is a living form of the Trinity:

  • Roots = Lord Vishnu
  • Trunk = Lord Shiva
  • Branches & Leaves = Lord Brahma
  • Fruits = Goddess Lakshmi

Worshipping it on this day activates 114 chakras, purifies 72,000 nadis, and grants moksha.

Amalaki Ekadasi Vrat Katha (Complete Story)

Once, King Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna: “O Kesava, which Ekadasi destroys all sins?”

Lord Krishna narrated the divine story of a poor hunter who accidentally attained Vaikuntha on Amalaki Ekadasi.

In the kingdom of Vaidisha, King Chitrasena and all citizens observed Amalaki Ekadasi with great devotion near a huge Amla tree on the riverbank. They built an altar, installed Lord Vishnu’s idol, offered lamps, flowers, fruits, and stayed awake the entire night singing bhajans.

A notorious hunter, tired and hungry after killing animals, came and slept under the same Amla tree. He fasted the whole day and night without knowing it was Ekadasi, and heard the Vishnu kirtan in his sleep.

When he died, Yamadutas came to drag him to hell, but Vishnu’s messengers arrived with divine chariots and took him straight to Vaikuntha!

Lord Vishnu explained: “Even an accidental observance of Amalaki Ekadasi under the Amla tree washed away all his sins. How much more will a devotee who worships with full faith attain?”

Moral: Never underestimate the power of this Ekadasi – even unknowingly, it grants liberation!
