First Karthika Somavaram 2026: 16 Nov in India, 9 Nov in USA and UK
First Karthika Somavaram 2026: Monday 16 November in India, Monday 9 November in the USA, UK and Canada. Sankalpam, puja order, deepam and breaking the fast.

Quick answer: The first Karthika Somavaram 2026 is on Monday 16 November in India, because Karthika Masam (amanta) begins on Tuesday 10 November. In the USA, UK and Canada the month begins on Monday 9 November by the local panchang, so the first Somavaram there is Monday 9 November 2026.
The first Monday of Karthika Masam is the day most families begin the Somavaram vratam for the month. This page covers what to do on that first Monday: the sankalpam, the puja order at home, the temple visit, the evening deepam and breaking the fast. For every Monday with its tithi and nakshatra, see Karthika Somavaram 2026 dates in India.

- India: Monday 16 November 2026. The month runs from Tuesday 10 November to Tuesday 8 December, giving four Somavarams: 16, 23 and 30 November and 7 December. The first one also falls on Vrishchika Sankranti, when the Sun enters Scorpio.

- Temples abroad on the Indian calendar: some begin the month on 10 November and keep four Mondays, starting 16 November. Follow your temple or family priest.

Why the first Monday matters
Monday (Somavaram) is Shiva's day, named after Soma, the Moon that Shiva wears in his hair, and Karthika is the month of lamps. Tradition holds that worship on a Karthika Monday carries special merit, and the first Monday sets the pattern for the rest of the month.
Step 1: Make the sankalpam for the month's Mondays
A sankalpam is a resolve made before God. After your bath, sit before the lamp at your home shrine, hold a little water in your right palm and say in your own words what you intend: "On the Mondays of this Karthika Masam I will worship Lord Shiva, keep the fast my health allows and light a lamp in the evening, for the well-being of my family." Then let the water fall onto a plate. Be realistic: name a fast you can keep on every Monday (four in India, five in the USA, UK and Canada), not only the first. No priest is needed at home.
Step 2: Begin the day right
- Early bath: Karthika snanam before sunrise, in a river or tank if you are near one, or at home with a little Ganga water added.
- Clean clothes and a clean shrine: wipe the puja area and arrange your items the night before. Our Karthika Masam puja samagri checklist lists what you need.
- Light the morning lamp: a ghee or sesame-oil lamp at the shrine before you begin.
Step 3: Puja order at home
The order most families follow takes about twenty minutes:
- Ganesha first: bow to Lord Ganesha with Om Gam Ganapataye Namah ("salutations to Ganapati") so the vratam begins without obstacles.
- Abhishekam: pour clean water slowly over the Shiva lingam while chanting Om Namah Shivaya. If you use them, offer milk, then curd, honey and ghee, rinsing with water after each. Water alone is a complete abhishekam. See how to do abhishekam at home.
- Alankaram: wipe the lingam dry and apply vibhuti and sandalwood paste.
- Bilva archana: offer bilva leaves, traditionally in threes, with white flowers. Many families recite the Bilvashtakam here.
- Japa: chant Om Namah Shivaya 108 times with a mala if you have one.
- Arati and naivedyam: wave the lamp and camphor, offer fruit or milk, and bow.
Mantras for the day. Om Namah Shivaya, the Panchakshari, means "salutations to Shiva". Some families also chant the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra, Om tryambakam yajamahe sugandhim pushtivardhanam, urvarukamiva bandhanan mrityor mukshiya mamritat, meaning "We worship the three-eyed One, fragrant, who nourishes all. As the ripe cucumber is freed from its vine, may He free us from death, not from immortality."
Step 4: Visit a Shiva temple
If you can, visit a Shiva temple in the morning after your home puja or in the evening when lamps are lit. Many temples offer Rudrabhishekam by the priest, or you can simply join the darshan. Abroad, 9 November is the day after Diwali, so check temple timings in advance. A temple visit is valued but not required: a home puja done with attention is a complete observance.
Step 5: The evening deepam
After sunset, in pradosha kala, light a ghee or sesame-oil lamp at the doorstep, before the tulasi plant and at the shrine. Tradition holds that a lamp lit with devotion in this month brings great merit. In India, sunset on 16 November is around 5:41 PM in Hyderabad, 5:51 PM in Bengaluru and 5:40 PM in Chennai (approximate). Abroad, use your local sunset, not Indian time.
Step 6: Hear the katha, then break the fast
Before eating, read or listen to the Somavara vrata katha. In one popular version, a devoted wife keeps the Karthika Monday vratam through illness and hardship in her family, and Shiva, pleased by her steady faith, restores their health and fortune. In another, a proud merchant mocks the vratam, loses his wealth, and regains it after he keeps the Mondays with true repentance. Read both in full in the Karthika Somavaram vratham katha.
Then offer naivedyam, share prasadam and break the fast: start with water, fruit or milk, then a light vegetarian meal without onion or garlic.
Choosing your fast for the first Monday
Tradition offers four levels: a full fast (upavasam), ekabhuktam (one meal, usually at midday), naktam (one meal after nightfall) and phalahara (fruit and milk). Start gently on the first Monday, perhaps with ekabhuktam or phalahara, and see how your body responds. What to eat, what to avoid and the sunset times for every Monday are in our Karthika Somavaram upavasam rules.
Health note: fasting is not a test of endurance. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, elderly, diabetic, on regular medication, living with heart, kidney or blood-pressure conditions, recovering from illness, or a growing child, do not keep a full or waterless fast, and consult your doctor before changing your eating. Phalahara at normal mealtimes, or simply giving up onion, garlic and non-vegetarian food for the day, is a sincere observance.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the first Karthika Somavaram in 2026?
In India it is Monday 16 November 2026, because Karthika Masam (amanta) begins on Tuesday 10 November. In the USA, UK and Canada the month begins on Monday 9 November by the local panchang, so the first Somavaram there is Monday 9 November.
Why is Monday 9 November not a Karthika Somavaram in India?
In India Amavasya is still running at sunrise on 9 November, so Karthika Masam starts on Tuesday 10 November and the first Monday inside the month is 16 November.
How many Karthika Somavarams are there in 2026?
Four in India: 16, 23 and 30 November and 7 December. Five in the USA, UK and Canada: 9, 16, 23 and 30 November and 7 December. Temples abroad that follow the Indian calendar keep four, so follow your temple.
What should I do on the first Karthika Somavaram?
Bathe early, make a sankalpam (resolve) for the month's Mondays, offer abhishekam and bilva leaves to Shiva with Om Namah Shivaya, keep the fast you can manage, light the deepam after sunset, hear the katha and then break the fast.
Can I start the Somavaram vratam if I miss the first Monday?
Yes. Many families say a vow may begin on any Karthika Monday. Make your sankalpam on the next Monday and keep the remaining ones; a sincere start matters more than the date.
Is a full fast required on the first Somavaram?
No. Tradition offers a full fast, ekabhuktam (one meal), naktam (one meal after nightfall) or phalahara (fruit and milk). If you are pregnant, diabetic, elderly, on medication or unwell, choose a light option and speak to your doctor first.
