Quick answer: Vinayaka Chavithi (Ganesh Chaturthi) 2027 falls on Saturday 4 September 2027, according to Drik Panchang for India. Drik Panchang lists Rishi Panchami and Agastya Arghya on the same date. The previous Ganesh Chaturthi was on Monday 14 September 2026. Because 2027's festival falls on a Saturday, many families abroad will be able to hold the main puja at home and attend temple celebrations the same weekend.

How the date is fixed

Ganesh Chaturthi is observed on the Chaturthi (fourth lunar day) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the month of Bhadrapada. In the amanta calendar used in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat, and in the purnimanta calendar of North India, the month name is the same for this festival, because it falls in the bright half.

Tradition holds that Ganesha was born at midday, so the festival is observed on the day when Chaturthi tithi prevails during madhyahna, the middle part of the daytime. When the tithi spans two civil days, panchang makers apply this rule to choose the date. This is also why a calendar calculated for a city outside India can occasionally differ by a day.

Drik Panchang lists Rishi Panchami on the same date in 2027. Rishi Panchami is normally the day after Ganesh Chaturthi; when the tithis fall close together, calendars can place both observances on one date. If you observe Rishi Panchami, ask your family priest which day to keep.

What the festival involves

  • Sthapana: A clay idol of Ganesha is installed at home or in a pandal and invoked with prana pratishtha.
  • Vinayaka Chavithi puja: Telugu families perform the Varasiddhi Vinayaka vratam, including the offering of 21 patri (leaves) and the reading of the Vinayaka katha and Syamantaka story.
  • Naivedyam: Modaks, kudumulu, undrallu, kozhukattai, laddus and panchakajjaya, depending on the region.
  • Avoiding the moon: Looking at the moon on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi night is traditionally avoided, to escape mithya dosha (false accusation).
  • Visarjan: The idol is immersed after one and a half, three, five, seven or ten days. The tenth-day immersion falls on Anant Chaturdashi.

We will add the 2027 Anant Chaturdashi date here once it is confirmed from the panchang; in 2026 it fell on Friday 25 September, eleven days after Chaturthi.

Why the date moves from year to year

Ganesh Chaturthi moved from 14 September in 2026 to 4 September in 2027. This is normal. The Hindu calendar follows the moon for its months and the sun for its year. Twelve lunar months add up to roughly 354 days, about 11 days short of a solar year, so most festivals arrive about 10 to 11 days earlier each year. Every two to three years an extra lunar month, Adhika masa, is inserted to bring the calendar back in step with the seasons, and festivals then jump later again. That is why Ganesh Chaturthi always stays in late August or September, at the end of the monsoon.

Observances around Ganesh Chaturthi

Several observances cluster around Vinayaka Chavithi. In North India and Maharashtra, married women and girls keep the Hartalika Teej fast for Goddess Parvati, usually on the Tritiya just before Chaturthi. In Karnataka, Gowri Habba (Swarna Gowri Vratam) honours Goddess Gowri on the day before Ganesha Habba. Rishi Panchami, which honours the Saptarishis, normally follows Chaturthi. We have not listed 2027 dates for Hartalika Teej or Gowri Habba here because they are not yet confirmed from our panchang source; check your local temple calendar.

Planning timeline for 2027

Because the festival falls on a Saturday, this is a good year to plan ahead. A simple timeline:

  • June to July 2027: Book the family priest or temple slot if you want a priest-led puja. Community organisers abroad usually book halls months in advance.
  • July 2027: Order a clay idol from your local temple or an Indian store that sources natural-clay murtis. Avoid plaster of Paris.
  • August 2027: Buy puja items: vrata kalpam book, durva, flowers, fruits, coconut, rice flour and jaggery for naivedyam. Start growing tulasi if you do not already have one.
  • Week of the festival: Clean and decorate the puja space, set up the mandapam and confirm visarjan arrangements.
  • Saturday 4 September 2027: Sthapana and Vinayaka Chavithi puja during madhyahna, katha, naivedyam and aarti.

Notes for NRI families

  • Follow the panchang published for your own city. Do not convert India's muhurat times into your time zone; the timing depends on local sunrise and midday.
  • Many diaspora temples hold the main community celebration on the nearest weekend. In 2027 the festival itself is on Saturday, so temple and home celebrations can coincide.
  • Check local rules before immersing an idol in a lake, river or the sea. Home visarjan in a bucket of water, with the dissolved clay poured into the garden, is accepted in most families.
  • If children are at school on Friday 3 September, the Saturday date makes it easy to involve them fully.

Frequently asked questions

When is Vinayaka Chavithi in 2027?

Saturday 4 September 2027, according to Drik Panchang for India. Ganesh Chaturthi, Vinayaka Chavithi and Vinayagar Chaturthi are the same festival under different regional names.

Will the date be the same in the USA, UK or Australia?

Usually, but not always. Hindu festival dates depend on when the Chaturthi tithi prevails at the local sunrise and midday, so a panchang calculated for your city can occasionally give a different date. Check the calendar published by your local temple; do not convert India's muhurat times to your time zone.

What is the puja muhurat for Ganesh Chaturthi 2027?

The puja is traditionally done during madhyahna (the midday period) on Chaturthi. Exact muhurat timings depend on your city and will be published in local panchangs closer to the date. We will add them only from a verified panchang.

When was Ganesh Chaturthi in 2026?

Monday 14 September 2026, with Anant Chaturdashi (the main day of immersion) on Friday 25 September 2026.

Why is Ganesh Chaturthi earlier in 2027 than in 2026?

The Hindu calendar is lunisolar. Lunar months are shorter than solar months, so festival dates move earlier by about 10 to 11 days each year until an extra month (Adhika masa) is added to realign the calendar, which pushes dates later again.
