Adi Jagannatha Perumal Temple, Thiruppullani

Vishnu (as Adi Jagannatha; with Dharbasayana Rama) temple · Thiruppullani, Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu, India

The Adi Jagannatha Perumal Temple at Thiruppullani, a village about 10 km from Ramanathapuram in southern Tamil Nadu, is dedicated to Vishnu, worshipped as Adi Jagannatha, with his consort Lakshmi as Padmasini (also called Kalyanavalli). It is one of the 108 Divya Desams, the Vishnu temples praised in the hymns of the Alvar saints.

The temple is closely tied to the Ramayana. Within it is a shrine of Rama in a reclining posture, known as Dharbasayana Rama, recalling the tradition that Rama lay on a bed of darbha grass on the nearby seashore while praying to the ocean god for a way to cross to Lanka. Dinamalar's temple directory notes that the place is also known by names such as Dharbasayanam, Adi Sethu, Pullaranyam and Ratnakara Kshetram.

Faith & Tradition

Religious Significance of Adi Jagannatha Perumal Temple, Thiruppullani

The name of the village is traditionally explained from the Tamil words pul (grass) and anai (bed or pillow): Thiruppullanai, 'the sacred grass bed', became Thiruppullani. According to the Ramayana tradition followed at the temple, Rama, advised by Vibhishana, lay on darbha grass for three days surrendering to Samudraraja, the king of the ocean, before the ocean god appeared and allowed the bridge to Lanka to be built. Sri Vaishnava sources therefore also call the place a saranagati kshetra, a place of surrender.

A second tradition links the temple with Rama's father. Wikipedia and Dinamalar record the belief that the childless king Dasharatha worshipped Adi Jagannatha here and was blessed with four sons. Following this tradition, many couples come to pray for children, and those hoping to marry pray to the processional deity, Kalyana Jagannatha. These are matters of devotion rather than recorded history.

The temple is praised by Thirumangai Alvar in his Periya Tirumoli, part of the Naalayira Divya Prabandham; Wikipedia counts twenty verses on Thiruppullani, and the Sri Vaishnava site koyil.org notes that the Alvar called the deity 'Deiva Silai' (the divine image). Among the eighteen Divya Desams of the Pandya country, Dinamalar describes it as one of the oldest.

History of Adi Jagannatha Perumal Temple, Thiruppullani

Wikipedia describes the temple as believed to have been initiated in the medieval Chola period, when several temples to Rama were raised, with later contributions from the Pandyas, the Vijayanagara rulers, the Madurai Nayaks and the Sethupathis of Ramnad. A damaged inscription from the 37th regnal year of Maravarman Sundara Pandya, which Wikipedia dates to 1305, records an order of a minister named Arya Chakravarti, and further damaged records date from 1518 and 1528.

Wikipedia also notes inscriptions in the temple that refer to Arab traders visiting the Pandya kingdom, and mentions that the Madhva saint Vadiraja Tirtha referred to the Dharbasayana temple in his work Tirtha Prabandha.

Today the temple is maintained by the Ramanathapuram Samasthanam Devasthanam, a trust under the hereditary trusteeship of the successors of the Sethupathi rulers of Ramnad, with its accounts audited by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of Tamil Nadu, according to Wikipedia.

Architecture and sacred features

The temple faces east and has a five-tiered rajagopuram. Adi Jagannatha is seated in the main sanctum with Sridevi and Bhudevi, and Padmasini has a separate shrine. Dinamalar describes the Dharbasayana Rama shrine as a sculpted tableau: Rama reclines on Adisesha with a sword beside him, Brahma rises from a lotus at his navel, and figures from the Ramayana, including Hanuman and Vibhishana, surround him. A separate Pattabhirama shrine has its own flagstaff.

The sacred tree of the temple is an ancient peepal (aswattha), and the temple's tirthas include the Hema Chakra Tirtha and the sea at Adi Sethu nearby, according to Dinamalar. Wikipedia mentions a rare metal image of Krishna dancing on a serpent among the temple's bronzes.
