Hyderabad to Tirumala: How to Reach by Train, Bus, Flight and Car (2026 Guide)
A checked, practical guide to travelling from Hyderabad to Tirumala by flight, train, bus or car, with the last leg up the ghat road or on foot, and a day-trip versus overnight plan.

Quick answer: Tirumala is about 556 km from Hyderabad by road to Tirupati, plus roughly 18 km up the ghat road. The fastest option is a non-stop flight to Tirupati airport at Renigunta (a little over an hour in the air). The best-value option for most families is an overnight train to Tirupati, or the daytime Vande Bharat Express from Secunderabad. Overnight state-run and private buses and a long day of driving are the other choices.
Editor's note: Updated 1 November 2026. Distances, ghat-road rules and transport details on this page were checked against the official sources listed at the end, mainly TTD (tirumala.org), the Tirupati district administration, the Airports Authority of India and Indian Railways information. Timetables, walking hours and token rules change often, so treat this as a planning guide and confirm on official channels before you travel. HinduTone is not affiliated with TTD.

By flight: Hyderabad to Tirupati airport
Non-stop flights connect Hyderabad (HYD) with Tirupati (TIR). Published schedules put the flight time at about 1 hour 10 minutes, and airlines including IndiGo and Air India have operated the route. Frequencies and timings change by season, so check the airlines directly for current schedules and fares.
Tirupati airport is at Renigunta. The Airports Authority of India and the Tirupati district administration both place it about 14 km from Tirupati; TTD rounds this to about 15 km. From the airport you can take a prepaid or app-booked taxi straight up to Tirumala, or travel into Tirupati first and catch an APSRTC bus up the hill. Taxis to Tirumala must keep to the ghat-road timings described below.
Best for: short trips, older pilgrims who should avoid a long overnight journey, and anyone fitting the visit around a fixed darshan slot.
By train: Hyderabad to Tirupati and Renigunta
Rail is the most popular way for Hyderabad families to reach Tirupati. Tirumala has no station of its own; TTD lists Tirupati as the nearest, about 26 km from Tirumala. Some trains also call at Renigunta Junction, near the airport, which is useful if your train does not enter Tirupati Main.
- Secunderabad to Tirupati Vande Bharat Express (20701 / 20702): flagged off in April 2023. It covers about 662 km via Nalgonda, Miryalaguda, Guntur, Ongole and Nellore in a little over eight hours and runs six days a week, not on Tuesdays. It is a daytime chair-car service, so you reach Tirupati in the afternoon.
- Narayanadri Express (12734 to Tirupati, 12733 back): a daily superfast train from Lingampalli via Secunderabad, Nalgonda and Guntur to Tirupati, taking roughly 12 to 13 hours. A long-standing overnight favourite.
- Venkatadri Express (12797 / 12798): from Kacheguda, running through Mahbubnagar, Kurnool and Kadapa towards Renigunta and Tirupati. Useful if you live in the south or west of the city.
Other trains run on the route on some days. Train numbers, routes and timings are revised from time to time. Always confirm on the Indian Railways enquiry service or IRCTC before you book. Booking well ahead is wise, especially around Brahmotsavam, Vaikuntha Ekadasi and summer holidays.
By bus: Hyderabad to Tirupati
Both the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) and the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) run services between Hyderabad and Tirupati, alongside many private operators. Most leave in the evening and arrive in Tirupati the next morning. Journey times quoted by operators range from about 10 to 13 hours depending on route and stops.
Book state buses on the official TGSRTC or APSRTC booking channels or their apps. Fares vary widely between ordinary, luxury and multi-axle sleeper classes, so check the current fare when you book rather than relying on figures quoted online. Buses usually terminate at the main bus stations in Tirupati, which are also starting points for APSRTC buses up to Tirumala.
By car: driving from Hyderabad
The Tirupati district administration lists Hyderabad as 556 km from Tirupati. Most travellers take NH 44 south through Mahbubnagar and Kurnool, then continue via Kadapa or a similar inland route to Tirupati. Expect 10 to 11 hours of driving without long stops, so start early or split the journey with an overnight halt at Kurnool or Kadapa.
From Tirupati, vehicles go up and down two separate ghat roads. According to TTD, the up road is about 17.8 km and the down road about 18 km, and the roads are normally open from 3 am to midnight, with vehicles barred between midnight and 3 am except on special occasions. TTD collects toll at the Sapthagiri toll plaza at the foot of the ghat road.
Two-wheelers have faced extra time limits on the ghat roads in recent years. In August 2024 TTD allowed them only between 6 am and 9 pm during the wildlife breeding season, and restrictions have returned after leopard sightings. If you plan to ride up, check TTD before you set out. For breakdowns on the ghat road, TTD lists an automobile clinic on 0877-2263636; for medical emergencies call 108.
From Tirupati up to Tirumala
Once you reach Tirupati, the final climb is short. APSRTC buses leave from the railway station and the main Tirupati bus stations; TTD describes them as running frequently, timed to pilgrim arrivals. Taxis also run up the ghat road within the permitted hours.
If you prefer to walk, TTD maintains two stone footpaths. The Alipiri route starts at the foot of the hills in Tirupati and is the longer climb, about three hours. Srivari Mettu starts near Chandragiri and is 2,388 steps, about 2.1 km, roughly 90 minutes. Walking hours, rules for children and Divya Darshan tokens for walkers have changed several times, so check TTD before you set out. For the full comparison of routes, luggage counters and timings, see our complete guide to reaching Tirumala by air, train, road and footpath and the Tirumala trek guide.
At the top, TTD runs free buses called Dharma Rathams around Tirumala, linking cottages, the Annaprasadam complex, Kalyanakatta and the darshan queue complexes. TTD added a batch of new electric buses to this free fleet in September 2026, so services are now more frequent than before.
Day-trip vs overnight plan
Day trip (flight only): possible only if you already hold a timed darshan booking. Take an early flight, go straight up the ghat road, have darshan and return on an evening flight. It is a tiring day, leaves no margin for delays in the queue, and is not recommended for elderly pilgrims or young children.
One night (train or bus): the most common plan. Take an overnight train or bus, arrive in Tirupati early, go up to Tirumala for your darshan slot, and take an evening or overnight train back. With the Vande Bharat you arrive in the afternoon, so stay a night in Tirupati or Tirumala and go for darshan the next morning.
Two nights (car or relaxed trip): drive down with a halt on the way, or arrive by train and stay a night in Tirumala. This gives time for the footpath walk, Tiruchanur Padmavathi temple and other temples around Tirupati without rushing.
Book in this order: darshan first, then rooms, then travel. Darshan and room quotas open monthly, about three months ahead, on the official TTD site ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in. Our guides to the darshan booking process, quota release dates and TTD room booking walk through each step. Each darshan pilgrim receives one free laddu; see the laddu prasadam guide for more.
