Bengaluru to Tirumala: How to Reach by Train, Bus and Car (2026 Guide)
Tirupati is roughly 250 km from Bengaluru by road, about five to six hours by car or bus. This guide compares train, bus and car, explains the ghat road and footpaths up to Tirumala, and gives day-trip and overnight plans.

Quick answer: Tirupati, the town at the foot of the hills, is roughly 250 km from Bengaluru by road. A car or a state transport bus takes about five to six hours, which makes road the fastest and most flexible option for most pilgrims. Trains take about six hours to Tirupati station. From Tirupati, the temple at Tirumala is another 17.8 km up the ghat road, or a climb on foot by Alipiri or Srivari Mettu.
Editor's note (1 November 2026): Facts on this page were checked against official sources, chiefly the TTD website, listed at the end. Timetables, ghat road rules and footpath token rules change often, so check TTD and the railway or bus operator before you set out. HinduTone is not affiliated with TTD (Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams).

| Mode | Where from in Bengaluru | Time to Tirupati | Notes |

Whichever mode you choose, you finish at Tirupati and still need to go up to Tirumala. That last leg is covered below and in detail in our main guide to reaching Tirumala.
By car from Bengaluru
Driving is the most popular choice for families from Bengaluru, because it lets you start when you like and take the car right up to Tirumala. The usual route runs east through Kolar, then Palamaner and Chittoor, to Tirupati. Distances quoted by route planners range from about 240 km to 260 km depending on where you start, and most estimates put the drive at five to six hours. TTD itself says pilgrims from Bangalore can drive down to Tirupati in about five hours.
Traffic leaving Bengaluru on Friday evenings and weekend mornings, and around Chittoor on festival days, can add an hour or more. Start before dawn if you can, and check a live map before you leave.
Ghat road rules. Two ghat roads link Tirupati and Tirumala. According to TTD, the up ghat road is about 17.8 km and the down ghat road about 18 km, and they are normally open from 3 am to midnight, with round-the-clock running on some special occasions. All vehicles go through the security check at Alipiri, and a toll is collected at the Saptagiri toll plaza. TTD asks drivers to follow the ghat road travel-time rules for safety.
TTD has restricted two-wheelers on the ghat roads at night several times in recent years, especially during wildlife breeding seasons and after leopard sightings, and for Garuda Seva in 2026 it barred them from 9 pm on 18 September to 6 am on 20 September. If you plan to ride, check the latest TTD notice before you set out. Get your car serviced before the trip; the ghat roads are steep, and TTD runs an automobile clinic for breakdowns.
By bus from Bengaluru
Both state transport corporations run regular buses on this route. KSRTC (Karnataka) operates ordinary and premium services, including Airavat class air-conditioned coaches, and has recently added one of its newer Airavat Club Class buses to the Bengaluru to Tirupati route. APSRTC (Andhra Pradesh) also runs several classes of bus to Tirupati. Private operators add overnight sleeper and semi-sleeper coaches.
Booking sites list the road journey at roughly five to six and a half hours. Buses leave through the day and night, so you can choose between a daytime ride and an overnight bus that reaches Tirupati early in the morning, which works well if you plan to walk up or join a morning darshan slot. Book on the official KSRTC or APSRTC websites or apps; boarding points vary by service, so read the ticket carefully. Fares change, so check the current fare when you book.
Most buses end at Tirupati, at or near the APSRTC central bus station. From there, APSRTC buses to Tirumala leave from the same area, which makes the bus-to-bus connection simple.
By train from Bengaluru
Rail is a comfortable option if you prefer not to sit in traffic, though it is not faster than road because the line goes the long way round through Bangarapet, Jolarpettai and Katpadi, a distance of about 330 km. Two trains are well known on this route:
- Seshadri Express (17209): runs daily from SMVT Bengaluru (Sir M. Visvesvaraya Terminal at Baiyappanahalli), stopping at KR Puram, and passes Tirupati in the late afternoon on its way to Kakinada. The return train (17210) leaves Tirupati early in the morning and reaches Bengaluru around midday.
- SMVT Bengaluru to Tirupati Intercity Express (22618): a morning daytime train that takes about six hours. It runs on some days of the week, not daily, and its Bengaluru end moved from KSR Bengaluru to SMVT in 2022.
Other long-distance trains also pass through Tirupati or Renigunta Junction. TTD notes that Renigunta is about 30 minutes by road from Tirupati. Timetables, days of running and terminals change, so check IRCTC or the National Train Enquiry System before you book, and note that both trains above start from SMVT rather than the Majestic (KSR) station.
Flying? Tirupati airport is near Renigunta, about 15 km from the town, but with the drive out to Bengaluru airport and check-in time, flying rarely beats a five-hour road trip. If you want to compare, check the airlines for current direct flights.
From Tirupati up to Tirumala
Once you reach Tirupati, you have three ways up the hill. This is a short summary; our main how-to-reach guide covers each in detail.
- APSRTC bus: TTD says APSRTC runs regular buses to Tirumala from the railway station, the RTC central bus station and other Tirupati bus stations, with frequency set around pilgrim arrivals. Round-trip tickets bought in Tirupati are valid for three days.
- Taxi or your own car: up the ghat road, normally open 3 am to midnight, with a security check at Alipiri.
- On foot: TTD gives the Alipiri footpath as about 7.8 km (roughly 3 hours) and Srivari Mettu as about 2.1 km (roughly 1 hour 30 minutes, 2,388 steps). Alipiri has about 3,550 steps. Luggage can be left at the foot of each path and collected at the top. Opening hours and free Divya Darshan token rules for walkers have changed several times, so check TTD before you set out. See our guide to the Tirumala trek.
At the top, TTD runs free Dharmaratham buses round the clock on a circular route, about every 8 minutes, linking the cottages, Annaprasadam complex, Kalyanakatta and the darshan queue complexes.
Day trip vs overnight plan
Day trip (possible, but tiring). This only makes sense if you already hold a timed darshan ticket, such as Special Entry Darshan booked on the official TTD website. Leave Bengaluru around 3 am by car, reach Tirupati by about 8 am, drive up the ghat road, and report for your slot. Allow several hours for darshan and collecting laddu prasadam, then drive back down and home. Expect a 16 to 18 hour day; with children or elders, it is not recommended.
Overnight (recommended). Take an overnight bus or an evening drive to Tirupati, or the Seshadri Express in the late morning, and stay the night in Tirupati or, if you have a TTD room, in Tirumala. Go up early, have darshan, and return the next afternoon or evening. This leaves room for Sri Padmavathi Ammavari temple at Tiruchanur and for queue delays, which are common on weekends and festival days.
Book first, travel second. Darshan and room quotas open monthly, about three months ahead, and popular dates go fast. Use our darshan booking guide, room booking guide and quota release calendar, then fix your train or bus. Each darshan pilgrim gets one free laddu; see our laddu prasadam guide for extra laddus. Check Tirumala today for crowd levels before you leave.
