Quick answer: Tirumala is about 150 km from Chennai. Every route goes through Tirupati, at the foot of the hills, and then up roughly 18 km of ghat road. The most popular option is a morning train from Chennai Central to Tirupati, which takes about three and a half hours. After that, an APSRTC bus or taxi takes you up the hill. A car or taxi from Chennai takes about four to five hours door to door, depending on traffic and the security check at Alipiri.

Editor's note: This guide was updated on 1 November 2026. We checked its facts against the official TTD pages and the railway and news sources listed at the end. By train from Chennai

The Chennai Central to Tirupati line is about 147 to 151 km long and is one of the best-served pilgrim routes in the south. The Tirumala hill has no railway station. TTD says Tirupati station is about 26 km from Tirumala and is well connected to major cities. Trains confirmed on railway listings for late 2026 include:

  • Saptagiri Express (16057): a daily morning train from Chennai Central to Tirupati that takes about three and a half hours. It is a good choice for a day trip.
  • Chennai Central to Tirupati Express (16053): a daily afternoon departure to Tirupati.
  • Garudadri Express (16203): a daily late-afternoon or evening departure to Tirupati. It suits pilgrims who want to sleep in Tirupati and go up the hill at dawn.
  • Vande Bharat (20677): an early-morning train from Chennai Central that stops at Renigunta Junction and runs six days a week. It is the fastest train but goes only to Renigunta, not Tirupati.
  • Long-distance expresses: several trains heading north and west stop at Renigunta Junction in the afternoon and evening.

Timetables, running days and train numbers change from time to time. Check them on the Indian Railways or IRCTC sites before you book. If you arrive at Renigunta, take a taxi, auto or bus into Tirupati, which is about 9 km away. Some Tirumala-bound buses also leave from the Tirupati railway station area, as described below.

The Saptagiri and Garudadri expresses also stop at Tiruvallur, Arakkonam, Tiruttani and Puttur. This makes them handy for pilgrims from Chennai’s western suburbs.

By bus from Chennai

TTD’s own travel page says direct buses run to Tirupati from Chennai, as well as from Bengaluru and Vellore. Both Andhra Pradesh (APSRTC) and Tamil Nadu (TNSTC and SETC) state transport run services, and private operators run more. Booking sites list Koyambedu (CMBT) as the main boarding point, along with stops such as Porur Toll Gate. North Chennai has its own mofussil terminus at Madhavaram, which handles many Andhra-bound buses. Chennai’s bus terminals have been reorganised several times since 2023, so confirm your boarding point on the ticket.

  • Book APSRTC services on apsrtconline.in and TNSTC or SETC services on the Tamil Nadu transport booking site. Look up current fares when you book. We do not quote fares here because they change.
  • Most buses end at the Tirupati central bus station. From there, APSRTC buses to Tirumala leave from the same area.
  • Extra special services usually run before Brahmotsavam, Vaikuntha Ekadasi and long weekends. They fill up quickly, so book early.

Some operators sell packages from Chennai that include darshan. HinduTone cannot vouch for them. Darshan tickets are officially issued only by TTD, so check what a package actually includes before you pay.

By car or taxi from Chennai

Driving gives you the most freedom, especially with elderly parents or small children. The road distance to Tirupati is roughly 135 to 150 km, depending on whether you go through Tiruvallur, Tiruttani and Puttur or take the route via Periyapalayam and Nagalapuram. Most drivers take about three and a half to four hours. Leaving the city early in the morning saves a lot of time.

  • Ghat road hours: TTD says the ghat roads are normally open from 3 am to midnight. All vehicles are stopped between 12 am and 3 am, except on some special occasions.
  • Up and down roads: one ghat road goes up and the other comes down. TTD gives the uphill road as about 17.8 km and the downhill road as about 18 km.
  • Vehicles allowed: TTD allows private vehicles and taxis or maxi cabs with up to 12 seats. A toll is collected at the Sapthagiri toll plaza, and all vehicles and bags go through the Alipiri security check.
  • Two-wheelers: the rules change. In 2023 TTD stopped two-wheelers on the ghat roads from 6 pm to 6 am. In 2024 they were allowed only from 6 am to 9 pm during the wildlife breeding season. In 2026 they were banned around Garuda Seva. Check TTD before you set out.
  • Breakdowns: TTD runs an automobile clinic and crane service for vehicles stuck on the ghat roads. Report to the Alipiri or GNC toll gates, or call 0877-2263636.

Parking at Tirumala fills up on weekends and festival days. Many pilgrims from Chennai leave the car in Tirupati and use APSRTC buses up the hill.

By air

Tirupati airport is at Renigunta, about 15 km from Tirupati town, according to TTD. When we checked flight search sites in 2026, they showed no non-stop flights between Chennai and Tirupati. With airport check-in and transfers, flying is slower than the train or car for this short distance. Flying makes sense from Hyderabad or further away. See our Hyderabad to Tirumala guide.

From Tirupati up to Tirumala

TTD says APSRTC buses to Tirumala leave from the railway station, the RTC central bus station, Sri Padmavathi bus station and Balaji link bus station. One TTD page says there is a bus about every 2 minutes, while another says only that buses run at a convenient frequency. Either way, you rarely wait long. Round-trip tickets are valid for three days. Taxis also go up, subject to the same ghat road hours.

If you want to walk, two stone footpaths lead up the hill. The Alipiri route has about 3,550 steps and takes about three hours. TTD’s own pages give its length as both 7.8 km and 11 km. The Srivari Mettu route has 2,388 steps and is about 2.1 km long, which takes about an hour and a half. Opening hours and Divya Darshan token rules for walkers changed several times in 2025 and 2026, so check with TTD before you plan a walk. Our complete how-to-reach guide covers buses, taxis and both footpaths in detail. Also see our Tirumala trek guide.

Once you are on the hill, TTD’s free Dharmaratham buses run round the clock, about every 8 minutes in both directions. They link the cottages, Annaprasadam, Kalyanakatta and the queue complexes.

Day trip or overnight: which plan suits you

Day trip. This works best if you already hold a timed darshan ticket, such as Special Entry Darshan, and the reporting time is late morning or afternoon. A typical plan:

  1. Take the morning Saptagiri Express or leave Chennai by car before dawn.
  2. Reach Tirupati around mid-morning and take an APSRTC bus or taxi up the ghat road.
  3. Report at the time on your ticket. Collect your free laddu: each darshan pilgrim gets one.
  4. Come down by late afternoon and take an evening train or bus back, or drive back before late night.

Overnight. This is better for families, elderly pilgrims, walkers and anyone without a pre-booked ticket. Travel on the afternoon or evening train, sleep in Tirupati or in a TTD room at Tirumala, and go up early. TTD issues Slotted Sarva Darshan tickets in Tirupati on a first-come, first-served basis, and the live count can change before you reach the counter. Walkers in particular should stay overnight, because Srivari Mettu is usually walked in the morning.

Whichever plan you choose, book darshan and rooms first and transport second. Darshan and room quotas open each month, about three months ahead. See our quota release guide, the step-by-step darshan booking guide and the room booking guide. Before you leave, check Tirumala today for current crowd and queue news. Read the best time to visit if your dates are flexible.
