Religious Significance of Thiruvazhmarban Temple, Thiruppathisaram

The goddess, Kamalavalli, has no separate shrine. According to the Dinamalar temple guide and Wikipedia, she is believed to reside on the Lord's chest, which is what the name Thiruvazhmarban expresses: Wikipedia explains 'thiru' as the goddess, 'vazh' as to live and 'marban' as the chest or heart. Dinamalar notes that the Lord wears a gold chain with a pendant bearing the figure of Mahalakshmi.

The temple is praised in a hymn of Nammalvar in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, according to Dinamalar. Tradition, recorded by both Dinamalar and Wikipedia, holds that Udaya Nangai, a daughter of this village, married Kaarimaran, a chieftain of Kurunadu, prayed at Thirukkurungudi for a child and became the mother of Nammalvar. The child was taken to the tamarind tree at Alwarthirunagari, where he is said to have remained in meditation for sixteen years. Wikipedia notes that some accounts place Nammalvar's own birth here, while others place it at Alwarthirunagari.

According to legend recorded by Wikipedia, Vishnu appeared here to the Saptarishis, the seven sages, and their images surround the presiding deity. Another tradition links the temple with Kulasekhara Alvar: Dinamalar records that the Aadi Swathi festival commemorates the Lord taking Kulasekhara Alvar to Vaikuntam, and Wikipedia tells a story of the king finding his lost horse grazing by the temple tank, from which the name Thiruvanparisaram ('pari' meaning horse) is said to come.

History of Thiruvazhmarban Temple, Thiruppathisaram

Wikipedia notes that the temple's exact history cannot be established from its inscriptions. The oldest inscription is dated 1139 CE and records a donation by a merchant from Rajendra Cholapattinam; two further inscriptions, dated 1613 and 1785, record later offerings. A local account cited by Wikipedia credits the Madurai Nayak ruler Thirumalai Nayak (1623–1659) with building the stepped temple tank.

Wikipedia records that the temple is maintained by the Government of Tamil Nadu through the Kanyakumari Devaswom, which carried out a renovation and kumbhabhishekam (reconsecration) in recent years. The temple follows the Thenkalai tradition of Sri Vaishnava worship, according to the same article.

Architecture and sacred features

Wikipedia describes a temple of about two acres enclosed by granite walls, with a five-tier gopuram (gateway tower). The presiding deity is seated, about 9 feet tall according to the Wikipedia village article, and is made of a compound rather than carved stone: Dinamalar describes it as Kadu Sarkarai Yogam, a mixture of stone and lime coated with a paste including sugar and mustard. For this reason abhishekam (ritual bathing) is offered only to the bronze festival image, not to the main idol.

The sanctum also contains images of the Saptarishis, of Rama, Lakshmana and Sita, and of Vishvaksena, Kulasekhara Alvar, Nataraja and Sivakami, according to Wikipedia. Shrines of Garuda, Anjaneya, Ramanuja, Vedanta Desika and the Alvars stand in the second precinct. A hall near the tank, the Kalyana Mandapam, holds paintings of the Dashavatara, the ten avatars of Vishnu. The temple tank lies opposite the entrance; Wikipedia calls it Soma Theertham, while Dinamalar names it Lakshmi Theertham.
