Diwali Fireworks in South Australia 2026: Licensed Displays, Sparklers and Fire Season
South Australia licenses the people who fire displays: anything beyond general use fireworks such as sparklers and party poppers needs a SafeWork SA pyrotechnician. Many fire ban districts enter the Fire Danger Season on 1 November 2026, before Diwali. Here is what we could verify.

Who may fire a display in South Australia
We could not read SafeWork SA's own fireworks pages or the regulations, so whether members of the public may use consumer fireworks is listed below as not verified. What we could confirm from official listings is who may fire a display.
South Australia regulates fireworks under the Explosives Act 1936 and the Explosives (Fireworks) Regulations 2016, administered by SafeWork SA. Australian Business Licence and Information Service... A pyrotechnician's licence is required to personally use fireworks, other than general use fireworks, for a fireworks display or special effects display. Australian Business Licence and Information Service...
To hold the licence, a person must be over 21, hold a current National Police Certificate and have appropriate practical experience and training. The 2026-27 fee is listed as $312 for a 12-month licence. Australian Business Licence and Information Service...
For remote areas there is an exempt display permit: a display for public or community purposes by or for a prescribed body, only where it is not practicable to engage a licensed pyrotechnician because of travel distance. Australian Business Licence and Information Service... This is not a route for city temples, which can reach a licensed pyrotechnician.
The Fire Danger Season and Diwali
The CFS says that for any pyrotechnic (fireworks) display, it is the only authority that can issue a permit to light or maintain a fire during the Fire Danger Season. SA Country Fire Service: Fire Danger Season dates and permits...
In 2026/27 the season starts on 1 November 2026 in the Mid North, Murraylands, Riverland, Yorke Peninsula, Upper South East and Lower South East districts, and on 15 October in several northern and western districts. The Adelaide Metropolitan dates were still to be announced when we checked. SA Country Fire Service: Fire Danger Season dates and permits...
So a Diwali display in much of regional South Australia needs both a licensed pyrotechnician and a CFS permit. In Adelaide, check whether the season has been declared before 8 November.

Diwali 2026 dates in Australia and the fireworks rules
| Date | Day of the festival |
|---|---|
| Friday 6 November 2026 | Dhanteras |
| Sunday 8 November 2026 | Naraka Chaturdashi (morning) and Diwali / Deepavali, Lakshmi Puja (evening) |
| Tuesday 10 November 2026 | Govardhan Puja |
| Wednesday 11 November 2026 | Bhai Dooj |
HinduTone's Drik Panchang-aligned calendar lists Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) on Sunday 8 November 2026 for this region, with Dhanteras on Friday 6 November, Govardhan Puja on Tuesday 10 November and Bhai Dooj on Wednesday 11 November. Naraka Chaturdashi falls on the morning of the same day as Diwali. The dates differ from India because the tithis are calculated for local time.
For South Australia, the date that matters most is the start of the Fire Danger Season. In districts where it begins on 1 November 2026, Diwali week falls inside it, so displays need a CFS permit and any Total Fire Ban stops them altogether.

What we could not verify
These points are still open. Do not treat them as settled until the official authority confirms them:
- Whether members of the public may buy or use consumer (shopgoods) fireworks in South Australia; SafeWork SA's fireworks pages and the Explosives (Fireworks) Regulations 2016 could not be read during our check.
- Penalties for illegal fireworks use in South Australia.
- How far ahead a display must be notified to SafeWork SA, and to whom.
- The 2026/27 Fire Danger Season dates for Adelaide Metropolitan, Mount Lofty Ranges and Kangaroo Island, which the CFS listed as to be announced.
Diwali fireworks safety tips for South Australia
- Check the CFS website for Total Fire Bans and your district's Fire Danger Season before any outdoor flame. SA Country Fire Service: Fire Danger Season dates and permits...
- Check for a fire ban or dry-weather warning on the day. A ban can be announced at short notice and overrides the normal rules.
- Read the label before dark. The product category and the safety distance printed on it are the legal and practical limits for your garden or yard.
- Tell your neighbours in advance, especially older people and pet owners, and stop on time.
- Choose one sober adult to light everything. Light at arm's length, step back at once, and never lean over a firework.
- Keep a bucket of water or a hose ready, and soak every spent firework before it goes into the bin.
Lawful ways to celebrate Diwali without fireworks
- Clay diyas: a row of oil lamps at the door and windows is the heart of Deepavali and needs no permit. Stand each one on a metal plate or a tray of sand.
- LED diyas and string lights: battery diyas are safe for balconies, dormitories, rented flats and anywhere open flames are restricted.
- Rangoli: a coloured-powder, rice-flour or flower rangoli at the entrance welcomes Lakshmi and gives children a creative part in the festival.
- Temple and community celebrations: most Hindu temples and community associations hold Lakshmi Puja, aarti and cultural programmes during Diwali week; check their own website or notice board for the 2026 schedule.
- Authorised public displays: a professional display run under a permit or licence gives the family a fireworks moment without the legal risk.
- Quiet celebrations: music, bhajans, a diya-lit dinner or a lantern walk on your own property avoid noise complaints and fire risk.

This page is general information, not legal advice; local rules and temporary fire bans can change. Always check with the official authority for your exact address before buying or using fireworks.
Editor's note (25 October 2026): HinduTone checked the South Australian rules on this page against business.gov.au licence listings and the CFS Fire Danger Season page on 25 October 2026. SafeWork SA's own fireworks pages and the Explosives (Fireworks) Regulations 2016 could not be read, so some points are listed as unverified. We review this guide every year before Diwali; the next scheduled review is 15 September 2027.
