Religious Significance of Atulya Nadheswarar Temple, Arakandanallur

The temple was sung by Thirugnana Sambandar, who refers to the place as Araiyaninallur, the name from which Arakandanallur is derived, according to Wikipedia. thevaaram.org lists one hymn (padhigam) by Sambandar for this shrine, and Dinamalar counts it as the 12th Tevaram temple of the Nadu Nadu region. The name is explained by thevaaram.org as referring to a temple built on rock.

Tradition holds that when Sambandar arrived, the temple had been locked and worship had stopped; his hymns are said to have opened the doors and restored the rituals. Dinamalar and Wikipedia record that the two Nandis, the Pradosha Nandi and Adhikara Nandi, are believed to have moved aside so that the saint could see the Lord, and they still stand slightly off the axis of the sanctum. Another legend recorded by Wikipedia says that Vishnu worshipped Shiva here to be freed of the sin of overpowering Mahabali in his Vamana avatar.

The temple is also linked to Ramana Maharshi. The biography 'Bhagavan Ramana', excerpted by the Arunachala Ashrama, records that in late August 1896 the young Venkataraman left the train at Mambalapattu, walked towards Tiruvannamalai and reached 'the temple of Arayaninallur, built on a large rock', where he sat in the pillared hall and had a vision of brilliant light. Wikipedia adds that Ramalinga Swamigal also stayed here and sang in praise of the deity.
