Religious Significance of Bhaktavatsala Perumal Temple, Thirunindravur
The town's name is explained by the temple legend. According to Dinamalar and Malaimalar, Lakshmi left Vishnu after a quarrel and came to stay at this spot, so it became Tiru-nindra-oor, 'the place where Lakshmi stood'. Her father, Samudra Raja, the king of the ocean, tried to persuade her to return, addressing her as 'the mother who gave birth to me', and that phrase became her name, Ennai Petra Thayar. When she would not relent, Samudra Raja asked Vishnu for help; Vishnu came here for his devotee's sake, which is how he got the name Bhaktavatsala, and took Lakshmi back to Vaikuntha. Dinamalar adds that Kubera and Varuna are said to have worshipped here.
A well-known story explains how the temple came to be sung by the Alvars. According to Malaimalar and Dinamalar, Thirumangai Alvar passed through Thirunindravur at night, found the temple closed and went on to Mamallapuram without singing of it. Lakshmi, unhappy, sent Vishnu after him; at Mamallapuram the Alvar sang one verse for Thirunindravur. Asked by the goddess for more, the Lord followed the Alvar again to Thirukkannamangai, where the deity is also called Bhaktavatsala, and the Alvar sang of Thirunindravur there too. Malaimalar adds that Ramanuja praised the temple in Sanskrit.
