Quick answer: Diwali fireworks in South Carolina

What South Carolina allows

All consumer fireworks sold in the state must meet US DOT and CPSC consumer-fireworks standards. S.C. Code Title 40 Chapter 56 - State Board of Pyrotechnic Safety State law bars retail sale of consumer fireworks from tents, canopies or vehicles, so buy from a licensed store. S.C. LLR Board of Pyrotechnic Safety - FAQ

Fireworks may not be sold to anyone under 16. S.C. Code Title 40 Chapter 56 - State Board of Pyrotechnic Safety

A product that is legal to buy in South Carolina may still be illegal to possess or use in a neighbouring state such as North Carolina, so check the rules where you will use it.

Fireworks Prohibited Zones

A property owner or tenant can file an agreement creating a Fireworks Prohibited Zone, and a local governing body may extend the zone onto adjoining public property. Knowingly setting off fireworks in such a zone is a misdemeanor. S.C. Code Title 23 Chapter 35 - Fireworks and Explosives

Before Diwali, ask your city or county whether a zone covers your neighbourhood, a nearby park or the temple grounds, and whether any local ordinance limits days or hours.

General violations carry up to $200 or 30 days for a first offense, with higher penalties for repeat offenses. S.C. Code Title 23 Chapter 35 - Fireworks and Explosives

What we could not verify

These points are still open. Do not treat them as settled until the official authority confirms them:

  • How far counties and cities may ban or restrict consumer fireworks.
  • Current burn bans; the Forestry Commission notification page did not load.
  • The display permit process at the Office of State Fire Marshal.

Diwali fireworks safety tips for South Carolina

  • Tell your neighbours in advance, especially older people and pet owners, and stop on time.
  • Keep children well back and hand them nothing that is lit. Sparklers stay hot long after the spark ends.
  • Read the label before dark. The product category and the safety distance printed on it are the legal and practical limits for your garden or yard.
  • Never light fireworks indoors, on a balcony, under trees or near parked cars, and never point them at people, homes or animals.
  • Choose one sober adult to light everything. Light at arm's length, step back at once, and never lean over a firework.

Lawful ways to celebrate Diwali without fireworks

  • Clay diyas: a row of oil lamps at the door and windows is the heart of Deepavali and needs no permit. Stand each one on a metal plate or a tray of sand.
  • LED diyas and string lights: battery diyas are safe for balconies, dormitories, rented flats and anywhere open flames are restricted.
  • Rangoli: a coloured-powder, rice-flour or flower rangoli at the entrance welcomes Lakshmi and gives children a creative part in the festival.
  • Temple and community celebrations: most Hindu temples and community associations hold Lakshmi Puja, aarti and cultural programmes during Diwali week; check their own website or notice board for the 2026 schedule.
  • Authorised public displays: a professional display run under a permit or licence gives the family a fireworks moment without the legal risk.
  • Lakshmi Puja at home: the evening puja, aarti, sweets shared with neighbours and a family meal are what most people remember about Diwali.
