Every date matches India this month.
Quick answer: the December 2026 Hindu festivals in Australia fall on exactly the same dates as in India: Kalabhairav Jayanti on Tuesday 1 December, Utpanna Ekadashi on Friday 4 December, Masik Shivaratri on Monday 7 December, Vivah Panchami on Monday 14 December, Champa Shashti on Tuesday 15 December, Gita Jayanti and Vaikuntha Ekadashi on Sunday 20 December, Datta Jayanti on Wednesday 23 December and Saphala Ekadashi on Sunday 3 January 2027.
That makes Australia the simplest of the big diaspora countries this month: no local shifts in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth. The one thing that is truly local is the clock time of Dhanu Sankranti, which opens Dhanurmasam and Tamil Margazhi on the afternoon of Wednesday 16 December, in the middle of the Australian summer.
About these dates: Australian dates are calculated by the Drik method (HinduTone's calculator, checked against Drik Panchang to within a minute or two) — confirm on Drik Panchang for your city. Drik Panchang's Australia calendar gives the same dates for Kalabhairav Jayanti (1 Dec), Utpanna Ekadashi (4 Dec) and Masik Shivaratri (7 Dec).

Why Australia matches India while the West does not
Australian clocks run ahead of India's (from two and a half hours in Perth to five and a half in Sydney and Melbourne during daylight saving). The sunrise, evening and midnight moments that decide each festival therefore fall on the same calendar day as in India this month.
Families with relatives in the West will notice the difference. In the USA, Canada and the UK, Kalabhairav Jayanti is Monday 30 November and Masik Shivaratri is Sunday 6 December, a day earlier than in Australia. North America also keeps Vivah Panchami and Saphala Ekadashi a day earlier. If you share dates with cousins in New York or London, send them our USA guide or UK guide rather than your own dates.
A Karthika link: Masik Shivaratri on Monday 7 December coincides with the last Karthika Somavaram, a doubly auspicious Shiva Monday, just as in India. For the full month see Karthika Masam 2026 in Australia.
Dhanu Sankranti 2026 in Australia: an afternoon start to Dhanurmasam
| City | Dhanu Sankranti (local time) |
|---|---|
| Sydney | Wed 16 Dec 2026, 3:41 PM |
| Melbourne | Wed 16 Dec 2026, 3:41 PM |
| Brisbane | Wed 16 Dec 2026, 2:41 PM |
| Perth | Wed 16 Dec 2026, 12:41 PM |
Here Australia does differ from the northern countries. The Sun enters Dhanu (Sagittarius) in the middle of a Wednesday afternoon, so the first dawn after the Sankranti is Thursday 17 December. Calendars differ on whether the Sankranti day itself counts as day one of Dhanurmasam and Margazhi, so follow your temple's calendar for when the dawn Tiruppavai and Vishnu puja begin.
Summer helps this month of dawn worship: sunrise is early and the mornings are mild before the heat. See Dhanurmasam daily rituals for families and Tiruppavai 30 pasurams.
The festivals, and how Australian families keep them
- Kalabhairav Jayanti (Tue 1 Dec): the appearance day of Kala Bhairava, Shiva's fierce guardian form, who as commonly told humbled Brahma's pride and protects Kashi. A Tuesday-evening sesame-oil lamp and the Kalabhairava Ashtakam are the usual home observance. See Kalabhairava Jayanti 2026.
- Utpanna Ekadashi (Fri 4 Dec): as commonly told, the goddess Ekadashi arose from Vishnu to defeat the demon Mura; this is the traditional day to begin Ekadashi fasting. See Utpanna Ekadashi 2026.
- Masik Shivaratri (Mon 7 Dec): the Karthika Masa Shivaratri, on a Somavaram. An evening abhishekam at home or at a Shiva temple after work is common. See Karthika Masa Shivaratri 2026.
- Vivah Panchami (Mon 14 Dec): the wedding day of Rama and Sita, as commonly told. A short reading of the Sita kalyanam and a sweet offering suit a weeknight. See Vivah Panchami 2026.
- Champa Shashti / Subrahmanya Shashti (Tue 15 Dec): Khandoba's victory over Mani and Malla for Maharashtrian families, as commonly told, and Murugan worship for Tamil and Kannada families. See Subrahmanya Shashti 2026.
- Gita Jayanti and Vaikuntha Ekadashi (Sun 20 Dec): the day Krishna spoke the Bhagavad Gita, as commonly told, and this year also Vaikuntha (Mukkoti) Ekadashi. A Sunday makes it the biggest temple day of the month. See Gita Jayanti 2026 and our Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 Australia guide.
- Datta Jayanti / Margashirsha Purnima (Wed 23 Dec): the birth of Lord Dattatreya, son of Atri and Anasuya as commonly told, and Annapurna Jayanti. See Datta Jayanti 2026 and Margasira Pournami 2026.
- Saphala Ekadashi (Sun 3 Jan 2027): the "fruitful" Ekadashi of Pausha, on the first Sunday of the year, while many families are still on summer holidays.
Fasting in summer: dehydration is a real risk in Australian heat. A fast with water, fruit or milk is fully traditional. If you are pregnant, older, diabetic or on medication, check with your doctor first.
Summer holidays, heat and Vaikuntha Ekadashi crowds
- School summer holidays: the long school break begins in mid to late December in most states, so Vaikuntha Ekadashi, Datta Jayanti and Saphala Ekadashi all fall in holiday time. It is a good season to teach children a Gita verse or a Tiruppavai pasuram.
- Queuing in the heat: Vaikuntha Ekadashi on Sunday 20 December will bring large crowds to Vishnu and Venkateswara temples. Queues may be outdoors in summer sun: carry water, wear a hat and sunscreen, and bring elders in the cooler part of the day. Check your temple's website for its darshan arrangements; we do not list timings.
- Fire danger: on Total Fire Ban days, do not light lamps, camphor or havan fires outdoors, including in backyards and at picnic spots. Keep diyas indoors on a metal plate and never leave them alone.
- Christmas and beach trips: Christmas Day is Friday 25 December and Boxing Day Saturday 26 December. If you are camping or at the coast over Datta Jayanti or Saphala Ekadashi, a small portable altar and a printed stotra are enough.
- Visiting India: the dates do not change when you fly to India this month, which makes holiday planning easy.
- Ayyappa season: the Sabarimala Mandalam season overlaps December; see our Sabarimala 2026-27 season guide if a family member is keeping the vratham.

Frequently asked questions
Are Australian festival dates the same as India's in December 2026?
Yes. For Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, every festival in our table falls on the same date as in India, from Kalabhairav Jayanti on Tuesday 1 December to Saphala Ekadashi on Sunday 3 January 2027. These are calculated by the Drik method, so please confirm on Drik Panchang for your city.
When is Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 in Australia?
Sunday 20 December 2026 in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. It is also Gita Jayanti (Mokshada Ekadashi), and it falls in Dhanurmasam, which is why it is Vaikuntha Ekadashi this year.
What time is Dhanu Sankranti 2026 in Australia?
Wednesday 16 December 2026 at 3:41 PM in Sydney and Melbourne, 2:41 PM in Brisbane and 12:41 PM in Perth, local time. Brisbane is an hour behind Sydney because Queensland does not use daylight saving.
Why do American families keep Kalabhairav Jayanti on a different day?
Kalabhairav Jayanti is fixed by the tithi at local midnight. In North America that midnight falls on Monday 30 November, but Australia's clocks are ahead of India's, so Australia keeps it on Tuesday 1 December, the same day as India. Drik Panchang's Australian calendar also gives 1 December.
Is Masik Shivaratri on the last Karthika Somavaram in Australia?
Yes. Masik Shivaratri is Monday 7 December 2026 in Australia, the same day as the last Karthika Somavaram, just as in India. In the UK, USA and Canada it falls a day earlier, on Sunday 6 December.
How can I fast safely in the Australian summer heat?
Choose a fast that lets you drink water, or a fruit-and-milk fast, especially on hot days or if you are travelling. Stay out of the midday sun. Anyone who is pregnant, elderly, diabetic or on medication should ask a doctor before fasting.
