Diwali 2026 in Botswana: Dates, Lakshmi Puja Muhurat and Temples
Lakshmi Puja in Botswana falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, with the muhurat from 7:08 PM to 8:45 PM in Gaborone. Here are the five days, timings for nine towns and the temples where the Hindu community gathers.
Quick answer: in Botswana, Lakshmi Puja (main Diwali) is on Sunday 8 November 2026, and the Gaborone muhurat is 7:08 PM to 8:45 PM Botswana time. Dhanteras is on Friday 6 November, Govardhan Puja on Monday 9 November and Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November. The same dates apply in every town in Botswana; only the evening timings shift slightly. Gaborone has several Hindu temples, so most families in and around the capital have a place to gather as well as celebrating at home.
Editor's note (1 November 2026): HinduTone calculated these local dates from Drik Panchang tithi times using Drik's own rules for each festival, and checked our method against Drik's published dates for 15 countries. The Lakshmi Puja muhurat is the Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna that falls within Pradosh Kaal, following the Drik method, worked out for each town's own sunset. We do not list event schedules, because they change every year. Temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead; check their websites and social pages.
Diwali 2026 dates in Botswana
These are the five days of Diwali for Gaborone. The same dates apply throughout Botswana, which keeps a single time zone (UTC+2).

|---|---|---|
| Dhanteras | Friday 6 November | Buying new utensils, gold or silver; a lamp for Yama at dusk |
| Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali) | Sunday 8 November | Early oil bath (abhyang snan); Krishna's victory over Narakasura |
| Lakshmi Puja (main Diwali) | Sunday 8 November | Evening worship of Lakshmi and Ganesha, lighting of diyas |
| Govardhan Puja / Annakut | Monday 9 November | Mountain of food offered to Krishna as Govardhan; Gujarati New Year (Bestu Varas) for many families |

Naraka Chaturdashi and Lakshmi Puja share the same day this year. Amavasya in Botswana runs from Sun 8 Nov, 7:57 AM to Mon 9 Nov, 9:01 AM local time (11:27 AM 8 Nov to 12:31 PM 9 Nov IST). Sunday evening is therefore the only evening when Amavasya covers Pradosh Kaal, which is why Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday 8 November. Naraka Chaturdashi's pre-dawn bath also falls on Sunday morning, while Chaturdashi is still running.

Lakshmi Puja muhurat in Botswana explained
Lakshmi Puja is done in the evening of Amavasya, during Pradosh Kaal, the window of a little over two hours that begins at sunset. In Gaborone on Sunday 8 November, sunset is at 6:35 PM, so Pradosh Kaal runs from 6:35 PM to 8:45 PM.
Within Pradosh Kaal, the most auspicious part is when Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna is rising. Vrishabha is a fixed (sthir) sign, and worshipping Lakshmi in a fixed lagna is traditionally understood to help her stay in the home. In Gaborone, Vrishabha rises at 7:08 PM and Pradosh ends at 8:45 PM, which gives the muhurat of 7:08 PM to 8:45 PM. In every town in the table this year, Vrishabha rises during Pradosh, so each has a proper muhurat.
If you cannot be ready in time for the muhurat, doing the puja anywhere within Pradosh Kaal is still correct. Here are the figures for each town:
| City | Sunset | Pradosh Kaal | Lakshmi Puja muhurat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gaborone | 6:35 PM | 6:35 PM – 8:45 PM | 7:08 PM – 8:45 PM |
| Francistown | 6:24 PM | 6:24 PM – 8:35 PM | 6:57 PM – 8:35 PM |
| Mogoditshane | 6:35 PM | 6:35 PM – 8:45 PM | 7:08 PM – 8:45 PM |
| Maun | 6:38 PM | 6:38 PM – 8:51 PM | 7:10 PM – 8:51 PM |
| Molepolole | 6:36 PM | 6:36 PM – 8:46 PM | 7:09 PM – 8:46 PM |
| Serowe | 6:28 PM | 6:28 PM – 8:40 PM | 7:01 PM – 8:40 PM |
| Tlokweng | 6:35 PM | 6:35 PM – 8:45 PM | 7:08 PM – 8:45 PM |
| Palapye | 6:27 PM | 6:27 PM – 8:38 PM | 7:00 PM – 8:38 PM |
| Mochudi | 6:34 PM | 6:34 PM – 8:44 PM | 7:07 PM – 8:44 PM |
Hindu temples in Botswana for Diwali
Botswana's Hindu community is small, and almost all of its temples are in Gaborone, with one more in Selebi-Phikwe. We have confirmed the places below from the temples' own websites and reliable published listings. We could not confirm a Hindu temple in Francistown, Maun or the other towns in the table, so if you live there, ask local Indian families or contact one of the Gaborone temples, and plan a home puja.
Gaborone
- ISKCON Gaborone, Sri Sri Krishna Balaram Mandir, Gaborone: the Hare Krishna temple, which marks Diwali and Govardhan Puja and keeps the Kartik month with lamp offerings.
- BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Gaborone: consecrated in 2004, and known for its yearly Diwali and Annakut celebrations.
- Sri Balaji Temple, Gaborone: a South Indian, Dravidian-style temple to Lord Venkateswara, built by the Botswana Hindu Charities Trust and completed in 2007.
- Hindu Hall, Gaborone: the long-established community temple, often called the Gaborone Hindu Temple, where the major festivals including Diwali are traditionally observed. Listings for it are older, so confirm current arrangements locally.
Selebi-Phikwe
- Shiva-Vishnu Temple, Selebi-Phikwe: the main Hindu place of worship in the town, serving families in the Central District.
Gaborone also has a Sai temple and community groups such as the Botswana Gujarati Society. The High Commission of India in Gaborone has in past years supported Diwali celebrations in the capital and is a useful contact for news of community events. Temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead; check their websites and social pages.
How Diwali is celebrated in Botswana
Botswana has no history of indentured migration. Its Hindu community is made up mostly of Indian families who arrived after independence in 1966, many as traders, professionals, teachers, doctors and engineers; the Botswana Gujarati Society, for example, dates the arrival of the first Gujarati families to the mid-1970s. Today the community is concentrated in and around Gaborone and Selebi-Phikwe, with families of Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi-speaking and other backgrounds.
Because the community is so mixed, Diwali in Botswana brings together several traditions. Gujarati families often keep chopda pujan (blessing of account books) on Lakshmi Puja night and Bestu Varas, the Gujarati New Year, on Govardhan day, Monday 9 November, when temples such as the BAPS mandir offer an Annakut of many dishes. South Indian families may follow the Deepavali pattern, with the early oil bath on Naraka Chaturdashi morning, Sunday 8 November. Typical temple programmes include aarti, bhajans, a shared meal and cultural items by children. Sikh and Jain families, where present, mark Bandi Chhor Divas and the Jain Diwali (Mahavira's nirvana) on the same nights.
Diwali is not one of Botswana's national public holidays. Check the official 2026 holiday list on the government website for any changes.
Simple Lakshmi Puja at home
If you cannot reach a temple, a simple home puja is complete in itself. Begin within Pradosh Kaal, ideally during your town's muhurat.
- Clean the house, especially the entrance, and make a rangoli at the door.
- Set a clean cloth on a low table, place images or murtis of Lakshmi and Ganesha, and a kalash of water with mango leaves and a coconut if you have them.
- Light a ghee or oil diya, and invoke Ganesha first with a short prayer such as "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah".
- Offer flowers, kumkum, rice, sweets, fruit and a few coins to Lakshmi, chanting "Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah" or reading the Lakshmi Ashtakam.
- Perform aarti, share the prasad with family, then light diyas at doors and windows.
Practical tips
- Lakshmi Puja falls on a Sunday this year, which makes the evening puja easier for most working families. Dhanteras (Friday) and Govardhan (Monday) are working days, so plan leave early if you need it.
- Sunset is late by Indian standards: 6:35 PM in Gaborone and 6:24 PM in Francistown, so there is time to finish work, travel and prepare before Pradosh begins.
- November is early summer in Botswana, often very hot by day, with the first rains and thunderstorms arriving. Keep diyas sheltered from wind and rain, and never leave lamps unattended.
- Fireworks rules are set by local authorities; check before buying or lighting any, and be careful near dry grass.
- If you want a family puja or Annakut offering at a temple, book well ahead, as Diwali is the busiest time of the year.
