Durga Ashtami 2026 date in the UK: Sunday 18 October
A Hindu festival day is fixed by the tithi (lunar day) that prevails at local sunrise, not by the calendar date in India. In India the Ashtami tithi begins at 8:27 AM on Sunday 18 October, after sunrise, and ends at 10:51 AM on Monday 19 October (IST, Drik Panchang). Because Saptami is still running at India's sunrise on Sunday, India keeps Durga Ashtami on Monday 19 October.
The same tithi is one instant worldwide, but sunrise in the UK comes several hours later on the clock. In London the Ashtami tithi has already begun when the sun rises at about 7:27 AM on Sunday 18 October, and it ends at 6:21 AM on Monday, before Monday's sunrise. So Sunday 18 October is Durga Ashtami in the UK and Monday 19 October is Maha Navami. Drik Panchang's Mahashtami page lists "Durgashtami on Sunday, October 18, 2026" for every city in the table below.
| Day | In the UK | In India |
|---|---|---|
| Durga Ashtami (Maha Ashtami) | Sunday 18 October | Monday 19 October |
| Sandhi Puja | Night of Sun 18 / early Mon 19 October (local time) | Monday 19 October, around 10:51 AM IST |
| Maha Navami | Monday 19 October | Monday 19 October |
| Dussehra / Vijayadashami | Tuesday 20 October | Tuesday 20 October |
Ashtami tithi and Sandhi Puja times by city (UK)
| City (time zone) | Ashtami tithi (local time) | Sandhi Puja (48 minutes) |
|---|---|---|
| London | 3:57 AM Sun 18 Oct to 6:21 AM Mon 19 Oct | 5:57 AM to 6:45 AM Mon 19 Oct |
| Leicester | 3:57 AM Sun 18 Oct to 6:21 AM Mon 19 Oct | 5:57 AM to 6:45 AM Mon 19 Oct |
| Birmingham | 3:57 AM Sun 18 Oct to 6:21 AM Mon 19 Oct | 5:57 AM to 6:45 AM Mon 19 Oct |
| Manchester | 3:57 AM Sun 18 Oct to 6:21 AM Mon 19 Oct | 5:57 AM to 6:45 AM Mon 19 Oct |
Times are from Drik Panchang's Sandhi Puja and Mahashtami pages for London, Leicester, Birmingham and Manchester, fetched on 17 October 2026, in British Summer Time. The whole UK shares one time zone, so the tithi times are identical everywhere from Cornwall to Scotland; only sunrise differs. British Summer Time ends on Sunday 25 October, after the festival.
In the UK the Sandhi window falls just before dawn on Monday, before most people leave for work, so a family can light the lamps at home and still catch the train. Sunrise in London on Monday 19 October is at about 7:29 AM, so the whole window is in darkness. Sandhi Puja is the 48-minute window centred on the moment Ashtami ends and Navami begins: the last 24 minutes of Ashtami and the first 24 minutes of Navami. Do not convert India's Sandhi time by hand from a WhatsApp forward; use your own city's time from the table, or your priest's calendar.
What is Durga Ashtami?
Durga Ashtami, also called Maha Ashtami or Maha Durgashtami, is the eighth day of Sharad Navratri and one of the most important days of Durga Puja. In the nine-forms tradition the day belongs to Maa Mahagauri, the radiant, serene form of the Goddess, shown in white and riding a white bull. See our Navratri Day 8 Maa Mahagauri guide for her story and colour.
- Mahagauri puja: white flowers, a white or purple cloth, coconut and simple sweets are common offerings.
- Astra Puja: in the Bengali tradition, the weapons held by the Goddess are worshipped on Ashtami, recalling her battle with Mahishasura.
- Kumari or Kanya Puja: young girls are honoured as living forms of the Goddess: their feet are washed, they are fed and they are given small gifts.
- Sandhi Puja: at the Ashtami–Navami junction, 108 lamps and 108 lotuses are offered to Devi Chamunda, who is said to have slain the demons Chanda and Munda at that moment.
- Pushpanjali: devotees offer flowers to the Goddess in batches with the anjali mantra, the high point of Ashtami morning at Bengali pujas.

Durga Ashtami puja vidhi at home
Most families in the UK keep a short, sincere puja at home and join a temple or community programme later in the day. A simple order:
- Bathe early, wear clean clothes (purple, pink or white are popular on day 8) and tidy the altar or Navratri kalash.
- Light a ghee or oil lamp and incense, and take a sankalp (intention) for the family's wellbeing.
- Offer a short prayer to Lord Ganesha, then worship Maa Durga as Mahagauri with kumkum, akshat (rice), white flowers, fruit and naivedya.
- Chant the Durga mantra and Ya Devi verses below, or read the 108 names of Durga, or a chapter of the Durga Saptashati if that is your custom.
- Perform aarti, then Kanya Pujan if you are keeping it on Ashtami.
- At Sandhi time, light lamps (108 if you can, or as many as is safe) and offer flowers or lotuses, with a short prayer to Devi Chamunda.
Safety abroad: use tea-lights in metal trays, never leave flames unattended, keep them away from curtains and smoke alarms, and use LED diyas in hostels, rentals and apartments that ban open flames.

Texts are copied from our verified sources, with the Devi Mahatmya and Upanishad verses checked against sanskritdocuments.org. You can also simply chant Jai Mata Di with devotion. Chanting is an act of devotion; it does not promise any particular outcome.
Kanya Pujan at home in the UK
Kanya Pujan (Kanjak) honours young girls, traditionally aged about two to ten, as forms of the Goddess, often with one boy as Langur or Bhairav. Families who keep it on Ashtami can do it on Sunday 18 October in the UK, a weekend, which makes it easier to gather children. Families who keep it on Navami can do it on Monday 19 October.
- Finding girls to invite: ask friends' families, your temple, your community WhatsApp group or Navratri Garba friends. Two or three girls is perfectly fine if you cannot find nine.
- Ask parents first: confirm a time with them, and check for allergies (gluten, nuts, dairy) before you cook.
- The ritual: welcome the girls, wash or wipe their feet, apply a tilak, tie a red thread (mauli), feed them and touch their feet for blessings.
- Prasad: the traditional halwa, puri and kala chana; see our Kanya Pujan prasad recipe.
- Gifts: bangles, a small bag, stationery, books or a modest cash gift work well.
Full vidhi and dates for every country are in our Kanya Pujan 2026 guide.
Fasting and parana
Many devotees fast on Ashtami alone, while others keep all nine days. Common fasts are fruit-and-milk or grain-free, with sabudana, kuttu, singhara, potatoes and rock salt. Ashtami-only fasts are usually broken after the Ashtami puja and Kanya Pujan. Families who keep the full Navratri fast often end it after the Navami puja; Drik Panchang lists the Navratri parana on Tuesday 20 October. Follow your family custom.
Health note: pregnant or breastfeeding women, people with diabetes, low blood pressure or other conditions, older relatives and children should speak to your GP before fasting. Drink enough water, especially before a long night of Garba, and choose a lighter fast if you need to work or drive.
How Durga Ashtami is celebrated in the UK
Bengali Durga Puja committees
Bengali puja committees in London, Birmingham, Manchester and other cities rent community halls, school halls or temple spaces for the weekend of 17 and 18 October. A typical Ashtami includes the morning puja, Pushpanjali in batches, Kumari Puja at some pujas, bhog and an evening cultural programme. Many committees keep Ashtami Pushpanjali on Sunday even when the Kolkata panjika places Ashtami on Monday 19 October.
Gujarati Garba with the Ashtami aarti
Leicester's garba season, confirmed from 10 to 24 October in our UK city guide, runs right through Ashtami, and groups in London, Leicester, Birmingham and Manchester often hold a special Ashtami aarti before the dancing on Sunday night.
Temple Ashtami pujas
Mandirs hold Durga Ashtami puja, Chandi path or havan and Kanya Puja for families who register. Timings are published on each mandir's own calendar, so check before you travel. For Dussehra, Bhaktivedanta Manor near Watford holds its Dussehra festival on Sunday 25 October with free timed tickets, as listed in our UK city guide.
We list a temple or committee only when its 2026 schedule has been checked. For more, see Navratri 2026 in the UK, city by city and our Navaratri and Dussehra temples guide. Programmes change at short notice, so confirm with the organiser before travelling.
Planning the weekend: Ashtami, Navami and Dussehra
- Saturday 17 October: Bengali Maha Shashthi and Saptami festivities begin; Garba nights continue.
- Sunday 18 October, Durga Ashtami: home puja and Kanya Pujan in the morning, community Pushpanjali or temple puja, Ashtami aarti at Garba in the evening. Sandhi Puja is late on Sunday or early Monday, depending on your city.
- Monday 19 October, Maha Navami: Navami puja, Kanya Pujan for Navami-observers and havan. See our Navratri Day 9 Maa Siddhidatri guide.
- Tuesday 20 October, Dussehra / Vijayadashami: Aparajita puja, Shami puja and Ravan Dahan events. Drik Panchang's London page lists Bengal Vijayadashami on Wednesday 21 October, matching the Kolkata panjika, so Bengali committees may hold Sindoor Khela on Wednesday 21 October or on the weekend.
Monday and Tuesday are working and school days in the UK, so plan Navami and Dussehra pujas for the early morning or evening. For the local Vijay Muhurat, see Dussehra 2026 in the UK, region by region and Dussehra 2026 in the UK and London.
