Both Wikipedia and Kerala Tourism report the tradition that Sage Vasishtha installed Hanuman here, and Kerala Tourism says the site dates back over 3,000 years. Wikipedia's own dates for this tradition are inconsistent, so the age is not verified.
Wikipedia says the temple was held successively by the Alathiyur village Nambudiri clan, the King of Vettathunad and the Samuthiri (Zamorin) of Kozhikode. It is now run by a trust under the Malabar Devaswom Board with the Samuthiri as Chief Trustee. Kerala Tourism gives a similar account of Grama Namboodiri, Vattath Raja and the Zamorin.

Wikipedia describes a two-storey granite sanctum with copper-covered floors and a golden dome. The Rama image is about five feet tall, four-armed, in black stone covered in panchaloha, facing east; there is no Sita shrine. Hanuman has a separate shrine on the south side. Murals depict Ramayana scenes.
The temple faces east, with a temple tank north of the gopuram where devotees bathe before entering. A Lakshmana shrine lies on the north, a Ganesha shrine on the south and Naga shrines at the back. Wikipedia notes there is no flagstaff because no flag-hoisting festival is held.
