History of Tali Mahadeva Temple, Kozhikode

Kerala Tourism says the temple began as a small shrine in the village of Tali and was originally held by fifty families of trustees. The Zamorin later took control of it by force and executed trustees who resisted. A later Zamorin, Manavikraman, renovated the temple. Wikipedia, citing the Calicut Granthavari (Calicut Chronicles), gives a similar account of the takeover.

According to tradition recorded by Kerala Tourism and Wikipedia, the Zamorin instituted the Revathi Pattathanam in the 14th century as an act of penance for those killings. Wikipedia says the debates were held for seven days from the Revathi star in Thulam on two platforms either side of the temple's entrance hall, in the subjects of Tarka, Vyakarana, Mimamsa and Vedanta, and that famous scholars such as Uddanda Shastri took part.

Kerala Tourism records that the temple was damaged during Tipu Sultan's conquest of Malabar in the 18th century and repaired in 1964. Wikipedia states that the temple now comes under the Malabar Devaswom, with the Zamorin as managing trustee.

Architecture and sacred features

The temple is built in the traditional Kerala style. Kerala Tourism notes that the walls of the sanctum (sreekovil) are built in the shape of a chariot and are decorated with brass relief work and mural paintings, and that the temple combines wood and laterite with wood carving, brass work on the roof and granite sculptures.

Wikipedia describes the sanctum as two-storeyed and adorned with murals and granite sculptures of Shiva's attendants, and the temple as enclosed by high walls. The complex also includes a separate Vishnu shrine, a flagstaff (dhwajastambham), gateways and lamp pillars.
