Religious Significance of Sree Jagannath Temple, Thalassery
Kerala Tourism's Sree Narayana Guru pages describe the Thalassery temple as one of the temples the Guru himself established and consecrated, and as a place that put his ideas on worship and equality into practice. Its name was chosen after the Jagannath temple at Puri. The temple complex also houses a museum dedicated to the Guru's works, according to Kerala Tourism.
A distinctive ritual recorded by Kerala Tourism is the Elaneerattom, held in the Malayalam month of Edavam, when devotees carry pots of tender coconut water to the temple while chanting and the idol is bathed with it. The Guru directed that the money raised through this ceremony be spent on the education and industrial training of poor children. Kerala Tourism also records that in 1912 half of the temple's income was given to the Guru to buy land for the Advaita Ashram at Aluva.

Wikipedia records that a Thalassery resident, Varathoor Kaniyil Kunhikannan, visited Sree Narayana Guru in December 1904 to invite him to establish a temple in the town. The Guru allowed him to invite the poet Kumaran Asan as his representative, and a first meeting was held in Thalassery on 9 July 1905.
