Vandiyur Mariamman Temple and Teppakulam
Mariamman (worshipped together with Durga as Mahishasuramardini) temple · Vandiyur, Madurai, Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India
The Vandiyur Mariamman Temple stands on the eastern side of Madurai, Tamil Nadu, between the Vaigai river and the huge temple tank known as the Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam. The temple is dedicated to Mariamman, and Dinamalar's temple guide describes the goddess here as a guardian deity of Madurai.
The tank beside it, built by the Nayak ruler Thirumalai Nayak in about 1645, is one of the largest temple tanks in Tamil Nadu. Every year in the month of Thai (January-February) it hosts Madurai's float festival, when the processional images of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar from the Meenakshi Amman Temple are taken around the water on an illuminated float.
Faith & Tradition
Religious Significance of Vandiyur Mariamman Temple and Teppakulam
According to Tamil Wikipedia, the main image of Mariamman is seated with her right leg folded over the left, with the head of a buffalo below, while the festival image stands. Dinamalar's guide explains that the goddess is understood as both Mariamman and Durga in one form, with the demon Mahishasura beneath her feet. There are smaller shrines to Vinayaka and Pechi Amman under a sacred fig tree, and the neem and peepal are the temple's sacred trees.
Dinamalar records several local traditions: that the goddess was worshipped as the first guardian of Madurai on the city's eastern border, that kings prayed here before war, and that the first puja for festivals of other Madurai temples is offered here. Devotees offer salt, light lamps in lime-fruit cups and take vows such as carrying fire-pots and milk-pots. The guide also notes the traditional belief that the abhishekam water is taken as prasad for smallpox and eye trouble; these are devotees' beliefs, not medical claims.
The 1961 Census survey of Madurai's temples noted that devotees who come to the Meenakshi temple also worship at the Mariamman temple near the tank, a link that remains strongest during the float festival.
Heritage
History of Vandiyur Mariamman Temple and Teppakulam
The tank is firmly dated. The 1961 Census survey describes it as an artificial reservoir built by Thirumala Nayak in about 1645 for the use of Goddess Meenakshi, and INTACH's Madurai chapter gives the same date. Tradition, reported by INTACH and Tamil Nadu Tourism, holds that the pit was first dug to obtain earth for bricks for the king's palace, the Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal, and was later lined and turned into a tank.
Both the Census survey and INTACH record the tradition that the large monolithic Mukkuruni Vinayakar now worshipped in the Meenakshi Amman Temple was found during the excavation of the tank. The Madurai district administration and Tamil Nadu Tourism link the annual float festival to the birth anniversary of Thirumalai Nayak.
No founding date for the Mariamman shrine itself was found in reliable sources; Dinamalar describes it only as an old temple on the city's eastern edge. Wikipedia records that the temple is built in the Dravidian style.
Architecture and sacred features
The Census survey gave the tank's size as 1,000 feet north-south by 950 feet east-west, and INTACH gives about 305 m by 290 m; the Madurai district site describes it as a square tank of almost 16 acres. Twelve long flights of granite steps line its sides, and underground channels connect it to the Vaigai river. In the middle is an island with the Maiya Mandapam (central pavilion), which houses a Vinayakar shrine and a garden.
Tamil Wikipedia describes the Mariamman temple as having two dvarapalakas (door guardians) at the entrance to the sanctum and a wide courtyard in front of it.
