Diwali 2026 in Bulgaria: Dates, Lakshmi Puja Muhurat and Where to Celebrate
Lakshmi Puja in Bulgaria falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, with the Vrishabha muhurat from 5:29 PM to 7:16 PM in Sofia. Here are the five days, timings for nine cities and where the small Hindu community gathers.
Diwali 2026 in Bulgaria: Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday 8 November 2026, and in Sofia the Lakshmi Puja muhurat is 5:29 PM to 7:16 PM local time (UTC+2). Dhanteras falls on Friday 6 November, Naraka Chaturdashi is observed early on the morning of Sunday 8 November, Govardhan Puja is on Monday 9 November and Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November. The dates are the same in every Bulgarian city we checked; only the evening muhurat moves by a few minutes between the Black Sea coast and the west of the country.
Editor's note (1 November 2026): HinduTone calculated these local dates from Drik Panchang tithi times using Drik Panchang's own rules for each festival day, and we checked the method against Drik's published dates for 15 countries. The Lakshmi Puja muhurat is the Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna that falls within Pradosh Kaal, following the Drik method. We do not list event schedules: temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead, so check their websites and social pages.
Diwali 2026 dates in Bulgaria
These are the five days of Diwali for Sofia. The same dates apply across the country.
| Day | Date | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Dhanteras | Friday 6 November 2026 | Day of wealth and health; buying a metal utensil or a little gold or silver, and lighting a lamp for Yama in the evening |
| Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali) | Sunday 8 November 2026 (early morning) | Pre-dawn oil bath (abhyanga snan) while Chaturdashi is still running, remembering Krishna's victory over Narakasura |
| Lakshmi Puja (Diwali) | Sunday 8 November 2026 | Main night: worship of Lakshmi and Ganesha at the evening muhurat, rows of diyas |
| Govardhan Puja / Annakut | Monday 9 November 2026 | Offering of many foods to Krishna, remembering the lifting of Govardhan hill |
| Bhai Dooj | Tuesday 10 November 2026 | Sisters perform tilak and aarti for brothers, who give gifts in return |
Why do Naraka Chaturdashi and Lakshmi Puja share a date this year? Chaturdashi tithi ends at 11:27 AM IST on 8 November, which is 7:57 AM on Sunday 8 November in Bulgaria. So the morning bath belongs to Sunday's early hours, and Amavasya then runs from Sun 8 Nov, 7:57 AM to Mon 9 Nov, 9:01 AM Bulgarian time, covering the whole of Sunday evening. That is why Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday night. Govardhan Puja follows on Monday 9 November once Pratipada has begun.
For reference, the global tithi instants (Drik Panchang, IST) are: Trayodashi from 10:30 AM on 6 November to 10:47 AM on 7 November; Chaturdashi to 11:27 AM on 8 November; Amavasya from 11:27 AM on 8 November to 12:31 PM on 9 November; Pratipada to 2:00 PM on 10 November; Dwitiya to 3:53 PM on 11 November. These are Indian times; the Bulgarian Amavasya window above is the one to use locally.

Lakshmi Puja muhurat in Bulgaria explained
Two windows of time decide the Lakshmi Puja muhurat. The first is Pradosh Kaal, the period of roughly two and a half hours that starts at sunset. In Sofia on Sunday 8 November 2026 sunset is at 5:11 PM, so Pradosh Kaal runs from 5:11 PM to 7:59 PM. Diwali puja is traditionally done in this evening window, when lamps are lit as daylight fades.
The second is the Vrishabha (Taurus) lagna. Vrishabha is a fixed (sthir) sign, and worship of Lakshmi during a fixed lagna is believed to help her blessings stay in the home. In Sofia, Vrishabha rises inside Pradosh Kaal from 5:29 PM to 7:16 PM. That overlap is the muhurat we give in the tables.
Amavasya, the new-moon tithi on which Diwali falls, is in force from Sun 8 Nov, 7:57 AM to Mon 9 Nov, 9:01 AM in Bulgaria, so the whole Sunday evening is valid for Lakshmi Puja. If you cannot begin inside the Vrishabha window, any time within Pradosh Kaal is still a good time for the puja. If you are late home, many families simply do the puja as soon as they can that evening.
- Sofia sunset: 5:11 PM
- Sofia Pradosh Kaal: 5:11 PM – 7:59 PM
- Sofia Lakshmi Puja muhurat (Vrishabha within Pradosh): 5:29 PM – 7:16 PM
Hindu temples in Bulgaria for Diwali
Bulgaria's Hindu community is small. Most Hindus in the country are Indian students, professionals and their families, along with Bulgarians who follow Krishna devotion or yoga and Vedanta traditions. There is no large traditional mandir run by an Indian community trust, and we could confirm only a few places to go. We would rather tell you that honestly than pad the list.
Sofia
- ISKCON Sofia (Hare Krishna temple), Nadezhda district, Sofia. The International Society for Krishna Consciousness has been active in Bulgaria since the early 1990s, and its Sofia centre worships Jagannath, Baladev and Subhadra. ISKCON centres usually mark Diwali and Govardhan Puja with kirtan, aarti, lamp offerings and an Annakut feast.
- Embassy of India, Sofia. Not a temple, but the embassy is the main link to the Indian community and has held community gatherings for Indian nationals, people of Indian origin and friends of India. Its website and social pages are worth checking in late October.
- Association India, Sofia. A Bulgarian cultural organisation that has worked with the embassy on Indian cultural festivals.
- East-West Indological Foundation, Sofia. Founded in 1997 to promote Indian culture and philosophy in Bulgaria.
Rest of Bulgaria
Outside Sofia we could not confirm any Hindu temple. The Art of Living has an active Bulgarian network running courses in many towns, and it is a useful contact for meditation and satsang, though it is not a temple. In Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas and the other cities in our table, most families celebrate at home, often gathering with friends for a shared puja and meal. If you want a priest-led puja, ask in Sofia well in advance.
Temples and community groups usually announce Diwali programmes a few weeks ahead; check their websites and social pages.
How Diwali is celebrated in Bulgaria
Bulgaria is a mainly Orthodox Christian country, and Diwali is not a public festival here in the way it is in India, Mauritius or Trinidad. The Indian community is small, so Diwali is mostly a home and community celebration rather than a street festival. Indian families clean and decorate their homes, draw rangoli at the door, light diyas and candles on balconies and window sills, and share sweets with neighbours and colleagues.
Community programmes, when they happen, typically include an aarti, bhajans or kirtan, classical or Bollywood dance performances by children and local Indian dance students, and a vegetarian dinner. Bulgaria has a real interest in Indian culture, with yoga, Indian dance and Indology studied in Sofia, so it is common to see Bulgarian friends at these evenings.
Sikh families mark Bandi Chhor Divas on the same night, remembering Guru Hargobind Ji's release from Gwalior Fort, and Jain families observe Diwali as the nirvana of Lord Mahavira. Whatever your tradition, the shared idea is light over darkness, and many small diaspora groups celebrate together.
Simple Lakshmi Puja at home
If there is no temple near you, a home puja is fully traditional. Keep it simple and sincere.
- Clean the house during the day and place a rangoli or a few flowers at the entrance.
- Set up a clean low table or shelf with a red or yellow cloth. Place images or murtis of Lakshmi and Ganesha, with Ganesha on Lakshmi's left as you face them.
- Put a kalash (a pot of water with mango or betel leaves and a coconut) beside them, if you have one, and keep some coins or a little gold or silver on a plate.
- Begin within the muhurat for your city. Light a ghee diya, offer a flower, and pray to Ganesha first to remove obstacles.
- Offer Lakshmi kumkum, rice (akshat), flowers, sweets, fruit and a little puffed rice and batasha. Chant 'Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah' or read the Shri Suktam if you know it.
- Perform aarti, then light diyas or candles around the home, at the door and in the windows.
- Share the prasad with family and neighbours.
Practical tips for Diwali 2026 in Bulgaria
- Sunday puja: Lakshmi Puja falls on Sunday 8 November, so most people can be home in time for the muhurat. Dhanteras on Friday 6 November and Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj on Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 November are working days, so plan evening rituals around office hours. Check the official 2026 holiday list if you need leave.
- Early dark, cold evenings: The sun sets around five o'clock in early November, and evenings can be cold and damp. Keep outdoor lamps in jars or holders, and do the main puja indoors.
- Fire safety in flats: Many families live in apartment blocks. Never leave diyas or candles unattended, keep them away from curtains, and use LED lights on balconies if your building management prefers it.
- Fireworks: Rules on fireworks are set by local authorities. Check your municipality's rules before buying or using any, and be considerate of neighbours and pets.
- Puja items: Ghee, diyas, kumkum and Indian sweets can be hard to find locally; online shops in the EU stock them. Order a week or two early, as stocks run short before Diwali.
- Book early: If you want a priest-led puja at home or a special offering at ISKCON Sofia, ask well before the festival week.
