Mahabaleshwar Temple, Gokarna

Shiva (as Mahabaleshwara, the Atmalinga) temple · Gokarna, Uttara Kannada, Karnataka, India

The Mahabaleshwar Temple in Gokarna, Uttara Kannada district, is a Shiva temple on the Arabian Sea coast of Karnataka. Its deity is worshipped as Mahabaleshwara, and the linga is revered as the Atmalinga, which devotees believe holds the very soul of Shiva. Karnataka Tourism calls the temple the spiritual heart of Gokarna and notes that it is often called the 'Dakshina Kashi', the Varanasi of the South.

The temple is one of Karnataka's seven Muktisthalas, or places of liberation, and Wikipedia records that many families come to Gokarna to perform rites for their departed. Since 2021 the temple has been run by an Overseeing Committee set up by the Supreme Court of India.

Religious Significance of Mahabaleshwar Temple, Gokarna

According to the legend told by Karnataka Tourism and Wikipedia, Ravana won the Atmalinga from Shiva through intense penance, on the condition that it must not be set down before he reached Lanka. Near Gokarna, Vishnu created a false dusk so that Ravana had to stop for his evening prayers. Ganesha, disguised as a young boy, agreed to hold the linga, called Ravana three times and then placed it on the ground, where it became fixed. Ravana could not pull it free, and the name Mahabaleshwara, 'lord of great strength', is traditionally linked to that struggle.

The town's name is explained in the same tradition as 'cow's ear' (go-karna). Karnataka Tourism adds that fragments scattered during Ravana's attempts to uproot the linga are believed to have become other Shiva shrines along the Karnataka coast. Wikipedia notes that the temple is counted among the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams praised in the Tamil Tevaram hymns.

Gokarna is also unusual in its form of worship. Karnataka Tourism describes the tradition of sparsha darshan, in which devotees enter the inner sanctum and touch the Atmalinga. Wikipedia records that the linga sits within a square Saligrama pedestal (pitha), with a small opening at the centre through which its top can be seen.

Heritage

History of Mahabaleshwar Temple, Gokarna

The temple's antiquity is attested in literature. Wikipedia notes that the poet Kalidasa refers to the 'Lord of Gokarna' in the Raghuvamsha, and that an English traveller named Fryer visited during Maha Shivaratri in 1676 and described the festival. Karnataka Tourism says much of the present complex grew under the Vijayanagara rulers and the Keladi Nayakas, and Wikipedia also dates much of it to the Vijayanagara period.

The temple's management has been the subject of a long legal dispute. LiveLaw reported that in August 2018 the Karnataka High Court quashed a 2008 government order that had removed the temple from the list of notified institutions under the state's religious endowments law and handed it to the Ramachandrapura Math. On appeal, a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court in April 2021 transferred management to an Overseeing Committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice B. N. Srikrishna, directing it to follow the temple's customs and traditions. The committee includes the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of Uttara Kannada, the Assistant Commissioner of Kumta, two scholars and two of the temple's hereditary priests (upadhivantas). LiveLaw described the order as interim, pending the final decision in the appeal, and Bar & Bench reported in July 2024 that the Court gave further directions to strengthen the committee's working.

Architecture and sacred features

Wikipedia describes the temple as a granite structure in the Dravidian style. Karnataka Tourism outlines its layout: a gateway tower (gopuram), a pillared hall, a vestibule and a small, dark sanctum in which the Atmalinga is enshrined, with subsidiary shrines inside the enclosure wall. The Maha Ganapati and Bhadrakali temples in the town are traditionally linked to the same legend.
