Quick answer: We found 19 upcoming Garba and Dandiya listings in 13 New Jersey towns for Navratri 2026, most of them in Central Jersey (Edison, Woodbridge, New Brunswick, Somerset, Hillsborough, Monroe Township, East Brunswick, Old Bridge/Matawan) and around Princeton, plus two in North Jersey. The busiest nights are Friday 9 and Saturday 10 October and Friday 16 and Saturday 17 October, with a few nights on 23, 24 and 30 October. Navratri itself runs from Sunday 11 to Monday 19 October 2026 (Drik Panchang), and Dussehra is Tuesday 20 October. Several nights are already shown as sold out, so check the organiser's page early.

New Jersey is home to a large Gujarati and wider Indian community, and Navratri here stretches well beyond nine nights: there are temple Garba evenings, school and charity fundraisers, community association nights, Bollywood-style Dandiya parties and club nights. This guide lists what is publicly listed for 2026, grouped by area, and adds the context that turns a list into a plan: the 2026 Navratri dates, why Garba is a devotional dance, what to wear and where to shop, and how first-timers and families can join in comfortably.

Last updated: 7 October 2026. Event status key: Confirmed means the organiser's or ticketing listing gives a date and venue; Announced means the organiser has named the night but some details are pending; Listed — confirm with organiser means we found the night only on a news report or a third-party listing. Every New Jersey night below is currently Confirmed. Notes such as '(sold out)' are taken from the listing at the time we checked.

Sharad Navratri 2026 begins on Sunday 11 October and ends on Monday 19 October by the Indian calendar (Drik Panchang), with Dussehra (Vijayadashami) on Tuesday 20 October. Because most families work and study through the week, Garba abroad is concentrated on weekends. In New Jersey that means two main pairs of nights: Friday 9 and Saturday 10 October, just before Navratri begins, and Friday 16 and Saturday 17 October, inside Navratri. A smaller set of nights continues after Dussehra, on 23, 24 and 30 October.

Temple nights at Shree Umiya Dham in Edison and Vadtaldham Mandir in Somerset sit alongside community nights in Monroe Township, East Brunswick and Hillsborough, a charity Garba in Old Bridge, and ticketed Dandiya and club nights in Edison, New Brunswick and Woodbridge.

Princeton and Mercer County

Around Princeton, the Windsor Athletic Club hosts several nights across the season, from Bollywood-style Dandiya to the India Foundation of Metropolitan Princeton's Garba after Dussehra. There is also a school community night at Princeton High School and a Garba night at TCNJ in Ewing.

North Jersey: Secaucus and Saddle Brook

North Jersey's listed nights fall after Dussehra this year, on the last weekend of October. If you live in Bergen, Hudson, Passaic or Essex counties, also watch your local temple and Indian community association pages, as smaller neighbourhood Garba nights are often announced only there.

Why Garba is devotional, not only a dance

Garba is danced in a circle around a garbo, a clay pot with a lamp inside, or around an image of the Goddess, known in Gujarat as Mataji or Ma Amba. The lamp in the pot is traditionally understood as the light of life and of the Divine Mother within every being, and the circle itself is a form of worship: dancers move around the Goddess as devotees circle a shrine. Many nights begin or end with an aarti to Ma Amba, and the songs sung through the evening are largely devotional garbas praising the Goddess.

That is why the same etiquette applies in a New Jersey school gym or banquet hall as in a temple courtyard: bow to the Mataji before you join, stand for the aarti, and keep the circle alcohol-free. For the deeper meaning, read the spiritual significance of Garba; for prayers you can say before stepping into the circle, see Navratri mantras before Garba; and for how the dance travelled from Gujarat's villages to New Jersey, see the history of Garba.

Garba and Dandiya are often mixed on the same night. Garba uses hand claps and flowing turns; Dandiya Raas uses pairs of decorated sticks and is danced facing a partner. Our guide to Garba vs Dandiya Raas explains the difference, which is useful when a listing calls itself a 'Dandiya night' but includes Garba rounds too.

What to wear, and shopping on Oak Tree Road

Women commonly wear a chaniya choli (a flared skirt, blouse and dupatta), and men a kediyu or kurta with churidar or dhoti-style trousers. Neat Indian clothing, or simply comfortable smart clothes, is welcome at most community nights. Some listings have a theme; for example, one Woodbridge night on 17 October is called 'The White Garba', so check the event page for any dress code.

For outfits, jewellery and dandiya sticks, Oak Tree Road in Iselin and Edison is New Jersey's well-known Indian shopping street, with clothing, jewellery and sweet shops along its length. Go early in the week before a big Garba weekend, as the street gets crowded and alterations take time. Our Garba dress guide covers styles, fabrics and footwear in more detail.

First-timer tips for New Jersey Garba nights

  • Start in the outer circle, which is usually slower, and move in the same direction as the dancers around you. Never cut across the centre.
  • Learn the basic two-clap step before the night; our beginners' guide explains it simply.
  • Wear flat, comfortable footwear, or follow the venue's footwear rule. School gyms and temple halls often have their own rules.
  • Carry water and take breaks; Garba nights often run late, and club nights such as the New Brunswick listing run from 9 PM to 2 AM.
  • For children, agree a meeting point, keep them in the outer circle with an adult, and consider an earlier school or temple night rather than a late club night.
  • Parking and transport: many venues are schools, community centres or banquet halls with their own parking arrangements, and popular nights fill up. Check the venue's page for parking and arrival information, and consider car-sharing.
  • Keep tickets and ID ready; several nights are ticketed and some are sold out, so do not travel without confirming entry.

For steps, circle etiquette and tips for kids and elders, see Garba for beginners: steps, etiquette and kids.

Garba near you if your town is not listed

This list covers only nights that were publicly listed with a date and venue when we checked. Many New Jersey temples and Gujarati Samaj or community associations hold their own Garba, sometimes nightly through Navratri, and announce it only on their own websites, newsletters or social media pages. If your town is not listed, check your nearest Hindu temple, your local Indian or Gujarati community association, and university Indian student groups. Families in Hudson and Bergen counties can also look across the river at our Garba 2026 New York page, which includes Manhattan, Brooklyn, Long Island and nearby Connecticut nights.

Editor's note (7 October 2026)

This page was compiled on 7 October 2026 from publicly available organiser and ticketing listings for New Jersey Garba and Dandiya nights. We list only nights with a published date and venue, record sold-out notes as they appeared when checked, and do not add prices or line-ups. Dates, venues and availability can change at short notice, so treat this as a starting point and confirm on each organiser's page. We will update the page as new nights are announced during Navratri 2026. If you organise a Garba night in New Jersey that is missing, please contact HinduTone with a link to your official event page.
