Quick answer: Hanumad Vratam 2026, the Margashirsha Shukla Trayodashi vow to Lord Hanuman, falls on Monday 21 December 2026 in London, New York and New Jersey, and on Tuesday 22 December 2026 in India, according to Drik Panchang's city pages. In New Jersey, Sri Venkateswara Temple (Balaji Mandir), Bridgewater, lists "Hanumadvratam" on 21 December in its 2026 annual calendar. No UK temple we checked had published a Hanumad Vratam date by 5 November 2026, so check with your temple nearer the day.

Hanumad Vratam is kept mainly in Karnataka, where Drik Panchang notes that Hanuman Jayanti "is observed on Shukla Paksha Trayodashi during Margashirsha month" and that "the day is popularly known as Hanuman Vratam". Many Telugu families also keep it. It is a different day from the spring Hanuman Jayanti and from the Telugu Hanuman Jayanti in Vaishakha. Why the date abroad is a day earlier

The Trayodashi begins at 5:36 PM in India on 21 December, after sunset, so India keeps the vratam on 22 December. The same moment is 7:06 AM in New York, just before the city's 7:16 AM sunrise on 21 December (Drik's New York panchang for that day), so the US East Coast keeps it on Monday 21 December. Tithi times differ by city because they depend on local sunrise.

A note for the UK

Drik Panchang's London page gives Monday 21 December. The tithi is close, though: Drik's London panchang for 22 December shows sunrise at 8:04 AM with Trayodashi still running until 8:53 AM. A UK calendar that counts the tithi at sunrise may therefore name Tuesday 22 December. If your temple, Kannada koota or Telugu association announces a day, follow it.

What Hanumad Vratam is

Hanumad Vratam is a vow (vratam) of worship to Hanuman on the 13th lunar day (Trayodashi) of the bright fortnight of Margashirsha. Families who keep it usually do so every year and follow the procedure handed down in their own household. It is a day of devotion to Hanuman as the servant of Sri Rama. We do not promise any particular result from keeping it.

Not the same as other Hanuman Jayantis

Hanuman's day is kept on several dates across India, and families follow their own region's calendar. Drik Panchang's New Delhi page lists these for 2026-27:

  • Hanuman Jayanti (Chaitra Purnima, North India): Thursday 2 April 2026
  • Telugu Hanuman Jayanthi (Vaishakha): Tuesday 12 May 2026
  • Hanumad Vratam / Kannada Hanuman Jayanti: Tuesday 22 December 2026
  • Tamil Hanumath Jayanthi (Margazhi): Thursday 7 January 2027

A temple calendar abroad may list yet another Hanuman day. Hindu Center in Flushing, New York, marks "Chaturdashi; Hanuman Janam" on 7 November 2026 in its official November calendar, a different observance from Hanumad Vratam.

How families in the UK and USA keep Hanumad Vratam

In 2026 the date abroad is a Monday, a working and school day in both countries. These are common customs, not fixed rules; your family priest's practice comes first.

  • Sankalpa and puja: a morning bath, a lamp, and a short sankalpa naming the vratam, then worship of Hanuman, often with a picture of Sri Rama, Sita and Lakshmana.
  • The sacred thread: in Karnataka the vratam is known for a thread with 13 knots, linked to the 13th tithi. As commonly practised, it is worshipped in the puja and then tied on the wrist. Our Karnataka guide describes it in detail.
  • Recitation: many families read the Hanuman Chalisa or a chapter of the Sundara Kanda, and read the vrata katha their family follows.
  • Fasting: some fast until the puja is over, others eat one simple meal. Fasting is optional. Anyone with diabetes, heart or kidney conditions, anyone pregnant, older people and children should eat normally or speak to a doctor first.
  • Weekday plan: a short puja before work or school on Monday, and the Chalisa together in the evening. A temple visit can move to the weekend before, Saturday 19 or Sunday 20 December.
  • 41-day Hanuman mala: some devotees end a 41-day mala on this day. See our Hanuman mala rules guide and ask your guru before you begin.
