About the role
Every page on HinduTone, from a Telugu festival story to a panchang entry for a city abroad, reaches readers through servers, scripts and pipelines that someone has to look after. We are hiring a DevOps Engineer (Fresher) to join the people who keep that work running and to learn the craft properly from the ground up.
This is a starting position for someone who has studied Linux, scripting and containers and now wants to use them on a live website instead of a lab. You will not be thrown into production alone. Your first months will be about learning how our systems fit together, doing well-defined tasks under review, and slowly taking on more as your confidence grows. The role suits freshers with 0 to 1 year of experience who are curious about how websites stay up, enjoy the command line and do not mind reading logs. It is a hybrid role based in Hyderabad, with some office days and some days at home.
What you will do
- Carry out routine Linux administration tasks such as checking disk usage, managing users, applying updates and restarting services safely.
- Write and improve shell scripts that automate small jobs, like cleaning old files, checking service health or collecting logs.
- Write and maintain Dockerfiles for small services, and learn why image size and base image choice matter.
- Help maintain existing build and release pipelines, fixing broken steps and keeping them readable.
- Check application and web server logs each day, flag anything unusual and learn to tell noise from real problems.
- Shadow the on-call engineer during incidents, take notes and help with the follow-up tasks.
- Write and update runbooks so that common tasks are documented step by step.
- Test backup and restore steps in a safe environment and record the results.
- Help editors and developers with small technical requests, such as checking whether a deploy went out or a redirect works.
- Join review sessions where senior colleagues go through your changes and explain better approaches.
Skills we are looking for
Must have
- Comfort using Linux from the terminal: files, permissions, processes, services and package managers.
- Basic shell scripting in Bash, with variables, loops and simple conditions.
- An understanding of Git basics: cloning, committing, branching and opening pull requests.
- Some hands-on practice with Docker, even from college projects or self-study.
- Clear written English for notes, runbooks and handover messages.
- Patience and care with commands that change live systems.
Good to have
- A small personal project deployed on a Linux server or a free cloud tier.
- Exposure to GitHub Actions, Jenkins or another CI tool.
- Basic knowledge of how web servers like Nginx serve pages and handle redirects.
- Some Python for writing helper scripts.
- An interest in reading English, Hindi or Telugu content, which helps you understand what our readers see.
Who should apply
We are looking for freshers with 0 to 1 year of experience. A degree in computer science, IT or a related field is a good fit, as is an engineering or science degree with strong self-taught Linux and DevOps skills. Recent graduates who have done labs, certification practice or personal server projects are welcome, and so are people with a few months of support or system administration work who want to move into DevOps.
You should be able to work from our Hyderabad office on the agreed days and stay focused on the days you work from home. If you are still studying and want a shorter learning stint, our DevOps Intern position may suit you better.
What you will learn
You will learn how a real publishing website is built, released and watched, and why each step exists. That includes reading pipeline logs, understanding what a failed deploy looks like, and knowing which checks to run first when a page is slow. You will see how senior engineers think during an incident, which is hard to learn from courses.
You will also build good working habits: writing changes that others can review, documenting what you did, asking early when you are unsure and never running a risky command without a backup. As you show steady, careful work, you will be given more responsibility, such as owning a pipeline or a monitoring check end to end.
Because HinduTone publishes in three languages and sees heavy traffic around festivals, you will also get an early feel for how seasonal load, caching and release timing affect a real audience. Few fresher roles let you watch the effect of your own small fixes on a busy site so directly.
Preparing your application
- Put your Linux and scripting skills near the top of your resume, with one or two concrete examples of what you automated.
- Link to a GitHub repository with a Dockerfile, a shell script or a simple CI workflow you wrote yourself.
- Describe one small server or cloud lab you set up, what went wrong and how you fixed it.
- List any certifications or courses only if you can explain what you practised in them.
- Add a short line on why DevOps interests you more than pure development or support.
- If you have used Linux as your daily system or run a home lab, say so briefly and mention one thing it taught you.
Before the interview
Our walkthrough on starting a DevOps career as a fresher covers the skills employers usually test and is worth reading before you meet us. Spend some time on Linux commands for processes and logs, Git branching, how a Dockerfile is built layer by layer, and what a CI pipeline does at each stage.
