The nine days of Chaitra Navratri 2027

Each day belongs to one of the nine forms of Devi, the Navadurga. The table follows the tithi at sunrise in India; the naam mantra is the traditional one-line salutation for the day.

Pratipada lasts almost until the next sunrise, so Day 2 begins on 8 April with Dwitiya at sunrise. Regional calendars and temples sometimes colour or name the days differently, so follow your own tradition. See our Chaitra Navratri 2026 day-wise guide for last year's detailed day-by-day puja notes.

Ghatasthapana: starting the nine days

Ghatasthapana (also called Kalash Sthapana) is the installation of a sacred pot at the home shrine that stays for all nine days. Drik Panchang's rule is that it is done in the first part of the day while Pratipada prevails, and that the muhurat is the preferred time. Because this year's Pratipada began before sunrise and runs through the whole of 7 April in India, the usual morning muhurat applies.

  • Clean the puja space and place a clean cloth or a small mound of earth, in which barley or wheat grains are sown.
  • Fill a kalash with water, add a little Ganga jal if you have it, a coin, a betel nut and akshata, and place mango leaves in the mouth.
  • Set a coconut wrapped in red cloth on top and place the kalash on the earth.
  • Light a lamp (an akhand jyoti is optional, and should only be kept if someone can safely tend it), and say a short sankalpa to begin Navratri.
  • Pray first to Ganesha, then to Devi. Offer flowers, incense, fruit and sweets each morning and evening, and read or listen to a Devi stotra.

The sprouts that grow from the sown grains over the nine days are traditionally taken as a sign of the home's prosperity; they are a lovely reminder of spring, not a prediction.

Daily puja and mantras

A simple daily puja is a lamp, flowers, a short prayer and a mantra. The verse most widely recited during Navratri is from the Devi Mahatmya:

या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शक्तिरूपेण संस्थिता। नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

Ya Devi sarvabhuteshu shakti-rupena samsthita, namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namah.

Meaning: To the Devi who abides in all beings in the form of Shakti, salutations again and again and again. Many families also recite the Durga Suktam, whose first verse (from the Rigveda) reads:

ॐ जातवेदसे सुनवाम सोममरातीयतो निदहाति वेदः ।
स नः पर्षदति दुर्गाणि विश्वा नावेव सिन्धुं दुरिताऽत्यग्निः ॥ १॥

oṃ jātavedase sunavāma somamarātīyato nidahāti vedaḥ |
sa naḥ parṣadati durgāṇi viśvā nāveva sindhuṃ duritā'tyagniḥ || 1||

Meaning: For Jatavedas (Agni) we press soma. May he burn away what stands against us, and may he carry us across all difficulties as a boat carries us across the sea, and beyond all wrongs. For the verse in full see Navratri day-wise mantras.

Fasting rules and a health note

Many devotees fast on some or all of the nine days. The commonly followed rules are one meal a day or fruit, milk and nuts; foods made from kuttu (buckwheat), singhara (water chestnut), sabudana, potatoes, sendha namak (rock salt) and fruit; and avoiding grains, onion, garlic, meat and alcohol. See our Navratri fasting rules and what to eat for a detailed list.

Health note: Fasting is a personal choice and it is not required for devotion. Pregnant and breastfeeding women, children, older people, anyone with diabetes, low blood pressure, an eating disorder or another medical condition, and anyone taking regular medicines should speak to a doctor before fasting. Drink enough water, break the fast gently, and stop if you feel dizzy or unwell. Daily prayer without a fast is just as valid.

Ashtami, Navami and Kanya Pujan

On Ashtami (Wednesday 14 April in India) or Navami (Thursday 15 April) many families invite nine young girls, symbolising the nine forms of Devi, offer them a meal of halwa, puri and chana, wash their feet respectfully and give small gifts. It is an act of reverence for girls, and should be done warmly, with their comfort and their family's consent in mind.

Navami is also Rama Navami, the birth of Lord Rama; see Rama Navami 2027 for the muhurat. Hanuman Jayanti follows on Tuesday 20 April: Hanuman Jayanti 2027.

Regional days inside Navratri

  • Gangaur (Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh): Friday 9 April, Tritiya, the festival of Gauri (Parvati) and married and unmarried women.
  • Yamuna Chhath: Monday 12 April, Shashthi, for the river Yamuna.
  • Gudi Padwa, Ugadi and Navreh: Wednesday 7 April, the first day, the new year in Maharashtra, the Telugu and Kannada regions and Kashmir.
  • Rama Navami: Thursday 15 April, the last day, the birth of Lord Rama.

Chaitra Navratri is also called Vasant Navratri because it falls in spring. It is observed most widely in North and West India, and in Nepal and the diaspora. Our Chaitra Navratri 2026 USA guide explains the observance for families in North America.

Frequently asked questions

When does Chaitra Navratri 2027 start and end?

Chaitra Navratri 2027 begins on Wednesday 7 April 2027 with Ghatasthapana and ends on Thursday 15 April 2027, the day of Rama Navami in India, per Drik Panchang. Pratipada runs from 5:20 AM on 7 April to 4:28 AM on 8 April (IST).

What is the Ghatasthapana muhurat on 7 April 2027?

Drik Panchang gives 6:05 AM to 7:26 AM (1 hour 21 minutes) in New Delhi, during Pratipada. The time depends on your city's sunrise, so check Drik for your own location or ask your temple.

Is Chaitra Navratri 2027 nine days in the USA and Canada?

Pratipada is the tithi at sunrise on 7 April there, but Navami falls at midday on Wednesday 14 April, one day earlier than in India. The festival can therefore run eight local calendar days. Many temples follow their own pandit's panchang, so confirm locally.

When is Durga Ashtami and Kanya Pujan in Chaitra Navratri 2027?

In India Ashtami is the tithi at sunrise on Wednesday 14 April 2027 and Navami on Thursday 15 April. Families hold Kanya Pujan on either day, according to their custom.

When do you break the Chaitra Navratri fast in 2027?

Navami ends at 1:20 PM IST on 15 April, and Dashami follows. Many families break the fast after the Navami puja and havan on 15 April, others on the morning of Friday 16 April. Follow your family or temple custom.

Is it safe to fast for all nine days?

A full nine-day fast is not right for everyone. Pregnant and breastfeeding women, children, older people and anyone with diabetes, low blood pressure or another medical condition should ask a doctor first. A single-meal or fruit-and-milk fast, or simply daily prayer without fasting, is equally accepted.
