Source: Drik Panchang Yugadi 2027 pages for Singapore and Sydney, checked 30 October 2026; the other cities are calculated by HinduTone with Drik's rules (our calculator matched Drik to within a minute on the Hyderabad, Singapore and Sydney pages). Singapore and Malaysia keep 7 April even though Pratipada begins about 50 minutes after sunrise there, because it is not the tithi at sunrise on either day and Drik then gives the day it begins. Australia and New Zealand give 8 April. Canada's BC, Alberta and Manitoba use fixed UTC-7, UTC-6 and UTC-5 from November 2026; these match summer clocks in April, so the table is unaffected.

What Ugadi means

The name comes from the Sanskrit yuga (age) and adi (beginning): the start of a new age, and in everyday terms the start of a new year. Ugadi is the new year for people in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka who follow the lunar (chandramana) calendar, in which each month begins after the new moon. In Karnataka it is written Yugadi.

Tradition holds that Brahma began the work of creation on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, which is why the first day of Chaitra is treated as the first day of time itself. The Shalivahana Shaka era, still used in the Deccan and in the Indian national calendar, also counts its years from this day.

Ugadi falls in spring, when neem trees flower, mango trees carry their first raw fruit and the harvest of the winter crop is home. Many of the day's customs, from the neem in the pachadi to the mango leaves over the door, come straight from that season.

Plavanga Nama Samvatsara: the new year's name

The Telugu and Kannada calendars name each year from a cycle of 60 samvatsaras, the same cycle used in Tamil Nadu and in the old Brihaspati reckoning. The year that ends on Ugadi 2027 is Parabhava, and the year that begins is Plavanga. Every samvatsara returns once in 60 years, so for most families a samvatsara's name is something heard once in a lifetime.

Panchangams printed for the new year list the year's king (Raja), minister (Mantri) and other rulers drawn from the planets. Those details are announced during Panchanga Shravanam on Ugadi day and differ between panchangam traditions, so ask your temple or family pandit for the one you follow.

OfficePlanet (Drik, Hyderabad, Wednesday 7 April 2027)
Raja (king)Budha (Mercury)
Mantri (minister)Budha (Mercury)
Senadhipati (commander)Mangal (Mars)
Sasyadhipati (crops)Shani (Saturn)
Dhanyadhipati (grain)Guru (Jupiter)

Meghadhipati (clouds)Mangal (Mars)
Rasadhipati (juices)Surya (Sun)
Nirasadhipati (dry goods)Shukra (Venus)
Phaladhipati (fruits)Mangal (Mars)

The Raja is the lord of the weekday on which the year begins. In Australia and New Zealand, where Ugadi is on Thursday 8 April, Drik's Sydney page gives Guru (Jupiter) as Raja, with Chandra as Rasadhipati and Shani as Nirasadhipati. Drik publishes the full verses and meanings on its Yugadi page.

How Ugadi is celebrated

  • Waking before sunrise for an oil bath (abhyanga snanam), traditionally with sesame oil, followed by new or freshly washed clothes.
  • Tying a toranam of fresh mango leaves across the main door, and drawing muggulu or rangoli at the entrance.
  • A family puja at the home shrine, often to Ganesha first and then to the family deity.
  • Preparing and sharing Ugadi Pachadi before any other food of the day.
  • Panchanga Shravanam in the evening, at a temple or at home, to hear what the new year holds.
  • Visiting elders and temples, and starting new work, studies or purchases on an auspicious day.

Ugadi Pachadi: six tastes of the year

Ugadi Pachadi (Bevu-Bella in Karnataka, where neem and jaggery are the heart of it) is the first thing eaten on Ugadi. A small cup carries all six tastes, a reminder that the coming year will bring every kind of experience.

TasteIngredientWhat it stands for
SweetJaggeryHappiness
SourTamarindChallenges that test us
BitterNeem flowersSadness and hard times
SaltySaltInterest and zest in life
SpicyGreen chilli or pepperAnger or heated moments
Tangy, astringentRaw mangoSurprise and new beginnings

Anyone watching their sugar intake, such as people with diabetes, can keep the jaggery small and take only a spoonful. To make it, soak a small lump of tamarind in water and strain it, add grated jaggery, a pinch of salt, finely chopped raw mango, a few fresh neem flowers and a little pepper or chopped green chilli. Families vary the meanings and the recipe; some add banana or a little coconut. See our Ugadi Pachadi story and recipe for more.

Simple Ugadi puja vidhi at home

  • Clean the home shrine the day before, and keep mango leaves, flowers, turmeric, kumkum, akshata (rice with turmeric), a lamp and the Ugadi Pachadi ready.
  • After the oil bath, light the lamp and begin with a short prayer to Ganesha.
  • Offer flowers, akshata and incense to the family deity, and place the new panchangam before the deity to be blessed.
  • Offer the Ugadi Pachadi and festive food as naivedyam, then do aarti.
  • Many families recite the Navagraha Stotram on Ugadi, since the new year's panchangam is read in terms of the nine planets.
  • Take the Pachadi as prasadam, seek the blessings of elders, and share food with neighbours or those in need.

The opening verse of the Navagraha Stotram, attributed to Vyasa, salutes Surya:

जपाकुसुमसंकाशं काश्यपेयं महाद्युतिम् ।
तमोऽरिं सर्वपापघ्नं प्रणतोऽस्मि दिवाकरम् ॥ १॥

japākusumasaṃkāśaṃ kāśyapeyaṃ mahādyutim |
tamo'riṃ sarvapāpaghnaṃ praṇato'smi divākaram || 1||

Meaning: I bow to the Sun, bright as the japa (hibiscus) flower, son of Kashyapa, of great splendour, enemy of darkness and destroyer of all sins. For a fuller walkthrough see our Ugadi puja at home guide.

Panchanga Shravanam

Panchanga Shravanam means listening to the panchangam. On Ugadi evening a priest or scholar reads the new year's almanac aloud: the samvatsara's name and rulers, expected rainfall and harvests, auspicious days, and a forecast for each rashi. In Telugu homes it is often heard on television or at the local temple; in many US and UK temples it is held on the nearest weekend.

Treat the forecasts as tradition rather than prediction. The value of the reading is in hearing the year's festival calendar and starting the year together as a community.

Ugadi food

After the Pachadi comes a festive meal. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana it usually includes bobbatlu or bhakshalu (flatbread stuffed with chana dal and jaggery), pulihora (tamarind rice), mango pappu, payasam and vadas. In Karnataka, holige or obbattu is the centrepiece, with chitranna and kosambari. Raw mango appears in many dishes because it is the first fruit of the season.

The same day across India

Chaitra Shukla Pratipada is a new year for much of India, under different names:

  • Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra and Sanvsar Padvo in Goa: a gudi (a pole topped with an inverted pot, silk cloth, neem and mango leaves and a sugar garland) is raised at the home. See Gudi Padwa 2026 for the customs.
  • Chaitra Navratri begins with Ghatasthapana and ends on Rama Navami, Thursday 15 April 2027. See Chaitra Navratri 2026 for the day-wise puja.
  • Vikram Samvat new year in much of North India, as Nav Samvatsar.
  • Navreh, the Kashmiri Pandit new year, also falls on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada.

Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Punjab, Bengal, Odisha and Assam follow the solar calendar and celebrate their new year on Mesha Sankranti, Wednesday 14 April 2027 (Drik), with Puthandu, Vishu, Baisakhi, Pohela Boishakh, Pana Sankranti and Bohag Bihu. Local rules can shift some of these by a day. Our Ugadi vs Gudi Padwa guide explains how the two calendars differ.

Ugadi for families abroad

  • Check the local date in the table above; in Australia and New Zealand Ugadi can fall a day after India.
  • 7 April 2027 is a Wednesday, so many temples and Telugu and Kannada associations hold Panchanga Shravanam and cultural events on the weekend of 10 and 11 April. Check with your local group.
  • Neem flowers are hard to find outside India. Indian grocers often stock dried neem flowers before Ugadi; frozen raw mango and tamarind paste work well too.
  • Make the Pachadi the evening before if your morning is a school or work rush, and keep it covered in the fridge.
  • Hear the panchangam on a temple livestream if there is no reading near you.

Our Ugadi celebrations in the USA and Ugadi worldwide guides list associations and temples by city; their event details are from 2026, so confirm 2027 plans directly.
