Rama Navami 2027 dates abroad, with the Smarta and Vaishnava day

Rama was born at midday, so Drik gives Rama Navami on the day when Navami covers the madhyahna, the middle fifth of the daylight hours. Because Navami lasts about 22 hours, cities far from India land on different days. Canada's BC, Alberta and Manitoba use fixed UTC-7, UTC-6 and UTC-5 from November 2026; these match summer clocks in April, so the times below are unaffected. The USA and Canada are on daylight time from 14 March 2027, the UK on BST from 28 March. Australia and New Zealand moved back to standard time on Sunday 4 April.

Source: Drik Panchang pages for New Delhi and London, checked 30 October 2026; the other cities are calculated by HinduTone with Drik's madhyahna rule (our calculator matched Drik to within a minute). The last column marks cities where the Navami tithi is present at sunrise on a different day from the madhyahna day. Drik's madhyahna day is the one to follow for the puja; some Vaishnava traditions, such as certain ISKCON and Ramanuja calendars, count the sunrise day instead. We calculated these from the tithi times and have not checked them against each temple, so ask yours.

The story of Rama's birth

According to the Valmiki Ramayana, King Dasharatha of Ayodhya, who had no son, performed a yajna, and his three queens, Kaushalya, Kaikeyi and Sumitra, gave birth to four sons. Rama, the eldest, was born to Kaushalya in the month of Chaitra, on the ninth day of the bright fortnight, at midday, under the nakshatra Punarvasu. Bharata was born to Kaikeyi, and Lakshmana and Shatrughna to Sumitra.

Rama is honoured as maryada purushottama, the ideal of dharma, who kept his father's word, lived in exile for fourteen years with Sita and Lakshmana, and returned to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. Hanuman, his devoted servant, is the model of devotion, which is why Rama Navami and Hanuman Jayanti are so often kept together. See Hanuman Jayanti 2027.

Rama Navami puja vidhi at home

  • Wake early, bathe and wear clean clothes. Many families clean the house the day before and put mango leaves on the door.
  • Set up an image or idol of Sri Rama with Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman, and light a lamp. Offer tulsi leaves, flowers, fruit, sandalwood paste and incense.
  • Begin the madhyahna puja within the muhurat, and at the moment of birth, around midday, ring a bell or conch and offer aarti, since this is the moment Rama is said to have been born.
  • Offer naivedyam. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana the traditional offerings are panakam (a drink of jaggery, pepper and cardamom) and vadapappu (soaked moong dal), and in the north halwa and fruit.
  • Read or listen to a portion of the Ramayana, the Rama Raksha Stotra or the Sundara Kanda, and sing bhajans.
  • Share the prasad and, if you can, feed someone in need.

The opening verse of the Rama Raksha Stotra, attributed to Budha Kaushika:

चरितं रघुनाथस्य शतकोटि प्रविस्तरम् ।
एकैकमक्षरं पुंसां महापातकनाशनम् ॥ १॥

caritaṃ raghunāthasya śatakoṭi pravistaram |
ekaikamakṣaraṃ puṃsāṃ mahāpātakanāśanam || 1||

Meaning: The story of Raghunatha is spread over a hundred crore of verses. The verse praises each single letter of that story as removing even grave wrongs. A short Rama mantra many families repeat is:

श्री राम जय राम जय जय राम॥

śrī rāma jaya rāma jaya jaya rāma||

Meaning: Glory to Sri Rama, victory to Rama, victory, victory to Rama.

Sita Rama Kalyanam and regional customs

  • Many Telugu temples hold Sita Rama Kalyanam, the ceremonial wedding of Sita and Rama, on Rama Navami. The festival at Bhadrachalam in Telangana is one of the best known.
  • In Maharashtra and Karnataka, Rama Navami is often marked with Ramanavami utsav and kirtans; in North India with processions, Ram Katha and Ramlila readings.
  • In Ayodhya, large crowds gather at the Ram Janmabhoomi temple and along the Sarayu. Check the temple trust's announcements before planning a visit, and expect long queues.
  • In the Swaminarayan tradition the same day is Swaminarayan Jayanti, the birth of Bhagwan Swaminarayan.

Fasting on Rama Navami: a health note

Many devotees fast until the midday puja and then eat a light meal of fruit, sabudana, kuttu (buckwheat) or other vrat food. Fasting is optional. Pregnant and breastfeeding women, children, older people and anyone with diabetes, low blood pressure or other conditions, or who takes regular medicines, should speak to a doctor first, drink enough water and break the fast gently.

Frequently asked questions

When is Rama Navami 2027?

What is the Rama Navami puja muhurat in 2027?

In New Delhi the madhyahna puja muhurat is 11:04 AM to 1:38 PM (2 hours 34 minutes) on 15 April, and the madhyahna moment, traditionally the moment of Rama's birth, is 12:21 PM. In London, Drik gives 11:39 AM to 2:24 PM on Wednesday 14 April.
