Garba and Navarathri in Singapore: two traditions, one festival

Singapore's Navaratri is strongly South Indian. For many Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayali families, the nine nights mean temple Navarathri festivities, the evening worship of Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati, and the Golu (Bommai Kolu or Bommala Koluvu) display of dolls on stepped shelves at home, with friends visiting to sing and receive gifts. Telangana families also celebrate Bathukamma, with women singing and circling flower stacks. See our Navratri 2026 Singapore guide, Bathukamma and Dasara 2026 in Singapore and the Golu 2026 setup guide.

Garba and Dandiya come from Gujarat and are kept alive in Singapore by the Gujarati community, North Indian families and community clubs. The two traditions sit happily side by side: many families visit a Golu in the afternoon and dance Garba in the evening. Both are ways of honouring the Devi during the same nine nights.

Why Garba is devotional, not just a dance night

Garba is danced in a circle around a lamp in a clay pot (the garbo) or an image of the Goddess, Mataji or Ma Amba. The circle is commonly understood as a picture of life moving around the divine at its centre, and the evening usually includes an aarti. Dandiya Raas, danced with pairs of sticks, is livelier and often follows Garba. Read more in Garba meaning and spiritual significance, Garba vs Dandiya Raas and the history of Garba from Gujarat to the world. For a short prayer before you join the circle, see Navratri mantras before Garba.

First-timer and family tips

  • What to wear. Chaniya choli, kediyu or a kurta are traditional; any bright, modest outfit works. In Singapore's heat and humidity, cotton and lighter fabrics are more comfortable than heavy embroidery. See the Garba dress guide and the Navratri 2026 colours of the day.
  • Stay hydrated. Garba is energetic and halls fill up quickly. Carry water and take regular breaks.
  • Etiquette. Bow to the Mataji, stand quietly for the aarti, never cut across the centre, and move with the circle.
  • Steps. Start in the outer circle and copy the people in front of you; our Garba for beginners guide explains the two-clap and three-clap steps.
  • Kids. Earlier-starting evenings, such as the 5:30pm Tampines event, suit families with young children. Keep children in the outer circle with an adult and agree a meeting point.
  • Getting there. Check the venue page for the nearest MRT station, bus routes and parking, and allow time for evening crowds.

Garba near you: other community events

Smaller Garba evenings are sometimes held by community clubs, temples, condominiums and Gujarati or North Indian associations, and are often announced only on their own pages, OnePA or community chat groups. If you do not see an event near you, ask your community club or temple. For Garba in Australia and New Zealand, see our Garba 2026 Australia and New Zealand guide.
