Dussehra 2026 in Arunachal Pradesh: Date, Itanagar Vijay Muhurat and How Navratri and Durga Puja Are Observed
Vijayadashami falls on Tuesday 20 October 2026. The Vijay Muhurat for Itanagar (12:54–1:40 PM), an honest picture of how Hindu residents of Arunachal Pradesh observe Navratri and Durga Puja, the Bengali Puja calendar, and practical notes on permits and travel.

Quick answer: Dussehra (Vijayadashami) 2026 is on Tuesday 20 October 2026. Vijay Muhurat in Itanagar: 12:54–1:40 PM (local time, calculated by the Drik Panchang method). Navratri begins on Sunday 11 October, and Durga Ashtami and Maha Navami fall together on Monday 19 October 2026. In Arunachal Pradesh the festival is observed mainly through community Durga Puja and household worship, rather than large Ramlila events.
Arunachal Pradesh, India's north-easternmost state, is home to many indigenous communities with their own faiths and festivals, including the Donyi-Polo tradition, Buddhism in the western and northern districts, Christianity and Hinduism. Dussehra here is not a statewide public spectacle as it is in the plains. It is kept by Hindu residents: some indigenous families, and the many households, including Nepali-speaking families, who have come from Assam, Bengal, Bihar and elsewhere for government service, trade, teaching or work, as well as personnel of the armed forces posted in the state. This page gives the 2026 dates, the Itanagar Vijay Muhurat and an honest picture of how Navratri and Vijayadashami are marked.
Navratri and Dussehra 2026 key dates (India)
| Observance | Date (2026) |
|---|---|
| Navratri begins (Ghatasthapana) | Sunday 11 October |
| Durga Ashtami and Maha Navami | Monday 19 October |
| Dussehra / Vijayadashami | Tuesday 20 October |
| Dashami tithi | 12:50 PM IST 20 Oct to 2:11 PM IST 21 Oct |
| Diwali | Sunday 8 November |
Dates are from Drik Panchang for India. In 2026, Ashtami and Navami share a single day, so families who perform Kanya pujan will do it on Monday 19 October. The Dashami tithi begins at 12:50 PM IST on 20 October, which is why Vijayadashami is observed that day.
Durga Puja dates 2026 (Bengali calendar)
Many Durga Pujas in Arunachal Pradesh follow the Bengali panjika. Drik Panchang's Durga Puja calendar for Kolkata gives these dates for 2026:
| Observance | Date (2026) |
|---|---|
| Mahalaya Amavasya | Saturday 10 October |
| Maha Shashthi (Kalparambha, Bodhon) | Saturday 17 October |
| Maha Saptami (Nabapatrika Puja) | Sunday 18 October |
| Maha Ashtami (Kumari Puja, Sandhi Puja) | Monday 19 October |
| Maha Navami | Tuesday 20 October |
| Bijoya Dashami (visarjan, Sindoor Khela) | Wednesday 21 October |
Note the difference: by the Bengali calendar Maha Navami falls on Tuesday 20 October and Bijoya Dashami on Wednesday 21 October, while the all-India Vijayadashami is Tuesday 20 October. Local committees decide their own schedules, so follow their announcements.
Vijay Muhurat 2026 for Itanagar
The Vijay Muhurat is the most auspicious window of Vijayadashami afternoon, traditionally used for Aparajita puja, Shami puja, Shastra puja and for beginning new work or journeys. Timing for Tuesday 20 October 2026, in local time (IST), calculated by the Drik Panchang method:
| City | Vijay Muhurat (20 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|
| Itanagar | 12:54–1:40 PM |
Because Arunachal Pradesh lies at the far eastern edge of India while using Indian Standard Time, the sun rises and sets early by the clock, and the Vijay Muhurat falls earlier in the day than in Delhi or Mumbai. Itanagar's window begins just a few minutes after the Dashami tithi starts at 12:50 PM IST. Towns further east, such as those in the Lohit and Tirap regions, will have slightly earlier natural timings; check a panchang set for your location.
How Navratri and Durga Puja are observed
Community Durga Puja
The most visible part of the festival in Arunachal Pradesh is Durga Puja. In Itanagar, Naharlagun and other towns with sizeable Hindu populations, community groups commonly set up pandals with an image of the Goddess, hold the daily pujas and offer bhog, and on the final day take the idol for immersion. Scale and arrangements vary from year to year and town to town, and we do not list specific pandals or organisers. Ask neighbours, colleagues or local community groups closer to the date.
Household worship
Families follow the customs of their home regions. Assamese and Bengali households may focus on Durga Puja; families from North India often keep the nine-day fast, perform Ghatasthapana and end with Kanya pujan; Nepali-speaking families may mark the season as Dashain, with tika and jamara from elders on Vijayadashami. All of these are valid ways to honour the Goddess.
Shastra puja and army units
Army and paramilitary units posted across the state commonly mark Vijayadashami with Shastra puja within their stations. These are observances within military establishments and are not public events.
Ravan Dahan
In some towns, residents' groups may arrange a small Ravan Dahan on Dussehra evening. Where it happens, it is local and modest; visitors should not expect the large Ramlila grounds of North Indian cities.
Hindu sacred sites in Arunachal Pradesh
Two sites are often mentioned by Hindu pilgrims. Parshuram Kund in Lohit district, on the Lohit river, is associated with the sage Parashurama and is best known for its pilgrimage on Makar Sankranti rather than Navratri. Malinithan in Lower Siang district is an archaeological site with ruins of an ancient temple, linked in local tradition with the story of Krishna and Rukmini. Neither is a Dussehra-specific destination, and both are remote; check current access and official information before travelling.
What to do on Vijayadashami
- Aparajita and Shami puja: worship the goddess of victory in the afternoon, ideally during the Vijay Muhurat.
- Shastra puja: clean and worship tools, vehicles, books and laptops. On Arunachal's mountain roads, a blessing for the family vehicle is especially meaningful.
- Bijoya greetings: after the Bengali Bijoya Dashami, visit friends and elders with sweets.
- Begin something new: Vijayadashami is one of the most auspicious days of the year for new ventures.
For the meaning of Dussehra and a full puja procedure, see our Dussehra / Vijayadashami 2026 pillar guide.
Travel notes
- Permits: Indian visitors from outside the state need an Inner Line Permit, and foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit. Check the state government's official website for the current process.
- Roads: October is generally after the main monsoon, but hill roads can still be affected by landslides. Allow extra time and check conditions locally.
- Respect local customs: Arunachal's communities have their own faiths and traditions. Ask before photographing people or entering sacred spaces.
For families abroad: use a panchang for your own city rather than converting Itanagar's Vijay Muhurat, and see our Navratri 2026 guide for NRI families.
